This is an exciting opportunity to develop a wide range of brain tumour research skills at the Human Genetics Unit at the Institute of Genetics and Cancer (IGC).  The successful applicant will maintain and develop brain tumour tissue culture models and conduct experimental work to explore how these cells respond to DNA damage. In particular, the applicant will utilise laboratory techniques to explore how extra-chromosomal DNA (ecDNA) respond to DNA damage (see job description for details).  You will join a growing community of brain tumour researchers in a Cancer Research UK Brain Tumour Centre of Excellence (BT-CoE), which is also part of the CRUK Scotland Centre. 

We are seeking a new research assistant to join our team on the Wellcome-funded AMBIENT-BD project. The appointee will work predominantly on the main data collection component of AMBIENT-BD (workstream four), which is an 18-month follow-up study of sleep, circadian rhythms and clinical/functional outcomes in people with bipolar disorder. This role is part of a broader multi-disciplinary team, led by the Principal Investigator (Professor Daniel Smith). This post is full-time (35 hours per week); however, we are open to considering part-time or flexible working patterns.

This Research Assistant position will contribute to the Wind2DC within the Institute for Energy Systems at the University of Edinburgh, which is funded by EPSRC and in collaboration with colleagues at University of Durham.

The Edinburgh Mood Disorders Research Clinic is funded by the Mental Health Mission / NIHR to deliver clinical assessments and research trial recruitment for patients with mood disorders. This innovative clinic will allow self-referral from community-based patients and will provide a ‘one-stop-shop’ offering clinical review and research eligibility screening of the patient’s mood disorder.

Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have significantly advanced Natural Language Processing and Computer Vision by providing more accurate solutions for a wide variety of problems, ranging from visual question answering to image captioning, object detection, and image generation. These models integrate textual and visual data, allowing them to understand and generate context-aware responses based on both modalities. VLMs have been successfully applied in numerous domains, including autonomous driving, robotics, healthcare diagnostics, and content moderation. Still, VLMs have significant limitations, particularly when tasked with interpreting complex semantic and spatial relationships between objects in an image. For example, they struggle with reading clocks and calendars, where precise spatial arrangements and symbolic meanings must be accurately inferred to extract meaningful information. This project aims to explore, develop and benchmark strategies for improving the accuracy and reliability of VLMs when processing complex multimodal inputs.

This position includes funding for international travel – e.g., for attending conferences, visiting research collaborators, and disseminating research findings. The  researcher will have access to the HPC infrastructure and office spaces available to the School of Informatics and the Edinburgh NLP Group.

The SharkScape project (https://www.napier.ac.uk/about-us/news/sharkscape-project-sharks-skate-masts) is seeking a Research Assistant for a 1-year post to support this exciting new research programme funded by the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (MASTS). Our Research Assistant will get to work across project partners including the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University, the Scottish Association of Marine Science, the University of the Highlands and Islands, the Orkney Skate Trust, the University of Aberdeen, Marine Directorate Science, and NatureScot. The post-holder will be responsible for the compilation, synthesis, and geospatial analysis of existing data from multiple sources on human activities and occurrences and distributions of sharks, skates, and rays (elasmobranchs) to the west of Shetland and in the northern and central North Sea regions. This post is full-time (35 hours per week) in person, and may require overnight travel within Scotland to work with project and external collaborators. There is also the potential to gain fieldwork experience during the year, subject to opportunities.

The position offers the successful candidate an exciting opportunity to join an ambitious project reimagining the future of traceability in food systems. They will lead the mapping of the Scottish salmon value chain structure, stakeholders, and dynamics through stakeholder engagement activities, including meetings, workshops, and conferences. We are looking for a post-doctoral level molecular cell biologist with an understanding of gene expression, epigenetic regulation and phenotypic analysis in fungal cells.  To conduct research and analysis pertaining to mechanisms of antifungal resistance via chromatin-mediated regulation in Schizosaccharomyes pombe, Cryptococcus neoformans and/or Zymoseptoria tritici within the Allshire laboratory; contributing to the development of new ideas, approaches and concepts. To influence the overall direction and management of the research project and to contribute to publishing or otherwise disseminating the outputs of research.

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join our group at the Centre for Regenerative Medicine (CRM) and the Institute for Regeneration and Repair (IRR), The University of Edinburgh. The Rodrigo Albors lab is focused on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms that explain differences in regenerative capacity. The post holder will be part of a Wellcome-funded research programme aiming to generate comprehensive single-cell omics data sets and perform cross-species functional analyses to gain deep mechanistic insight into why some animals can regenerate the spinal cord, but others cannot. In particular, this exciting project will compare the spinal cord response to injury in poorly regenerative lab mouse and the only known mammalian regenerator, the spiny mouse.

The aim of the project is to develop and implement a mathematical and numerical modelling framework to understand the fundamental physical processes underlying the dysfunction of the tau protein. The dysfunction of tau, which is tightly linked to a large class of dementias called tauopathies, includes the formation and runaway growth of multi-protein clumps that result in severe damage to neurons. There is still no effective treatment for tauopathies caused by excessive clumping of tau, largely due to an incomplete physical understanding of the molecular interactions and conditions in the neuron that dysregulate tau. The successful applicant, working closely with Dr. Luke Davis, will bring together coarse-grained “minimal” molecular modelling approaches, statistical physics, and high-throughput molecular dynamics computer simulations into a single tau-modelling framework. There is scope for a strong candidate to shape the research direction. The project is funded by the Wellcome Trust, through the Wellcome Accelerator Award (311948/Z/24/Z).

We seek a 2-year (24 month) postdoctoral research associate to join the research team on the NERC Pushing the Frontiers project “Determining the nature and drivers of Earth’s first metazoan radiation and subsequent extinction: The Cambrian ‘Explosion’ and Sinsk Event”. The overall aim of the project is to understand the drivers and evolutionary consequences of the first mass extinction of the Phanerozoic, the enigmatic Cambrian Sinsk Event, 514 million years ago.

The work will require the creation and interrogation of an integrated age model, and stratigraphic dataset of sedimentology, redox and isotope geochemistry, and palaeobiology in order to resolve the causes and effects of the SINSK mass extinction, via a highly integrated, multi-disciplinary programme of novel analyses and modelling using new, global and regional, data. 

A postdoctoral position in drug development for pulmonary microdosing trials is funded by the EPSRC-backed MicroTex Hub, a multidisciplinary initiative combining robotics, AI, chemistry, physics, biology, and clinical medicine to rapidly test treatments for pulmonary inflammation and infection. Based at the Baillie Gifford Pandemic Science Hub, MicroTex unites scientists, clinicians, and researchers to accelerate drug discovery. We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on a NERC-funded project on the interactions of host and microbiomes during population declines as seen through the lens of genomics. The post-holder’s main task is to conduct research on host-microbiome interactions during population declines by bioinformatically analysing low-coverage host genomic data from museum specimens of several mammalian species. You will contribute to sampling of museum-preserved specimens of mammalian hosts and associated oral microbiomes (dental calculus) in natural history collections, and will have the opportunity to process in the samples in the ancient DNA lab. The applicant should have a PhD in population genomics, evolutionary genomics, or a related subject. The ideal candidate will have extensive bioinformatics experience with low-quality, low-coverage whole genome data from non-model organisms. Expertise in ancient DNA analyses, imputations, hologenomics or multi-omics frameworks would be an asset. The applicant will complete high quality original research and will disseminate the data in refereed papers, conference presentations and seminars. We are looking for a self-motivated, enthusiastic, and proactive individual. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills, and the ability to work as part of a team as well as independently are important.

As pioneers in genetic engineering and reproductive technology in farmed animals, The Roslin Institute is a leader in innovation in Agri-Tech, with Engineering Biology playing a central role.

As part of these efforts, an Engineering Biology hub has been established at the Institute, to leverage the existing expertise, develop new technologies and advance leading projects in the Agri-Tech space. We are looking to recruit a postdoctoral fellow to support the goals of the hub through development of new genome editing technologies and applying those to projects involving the advancement of precision editing in farmed animals. This will include development and validation of new editing technologies, development of novel cell-based models of whole animal phenotypes and developing platforms for high-throughput phenotypic analysis. Specifically, this post will leverage cutting edge technology developed in Prof Mike McGrew’s group, to advance multiplex knock-out editing in chicken stem cells and cell lines.

We are looking for a postdoctoral research fellow to work on the Leverhulme Trust-funded project, ‘Weaponised Pasts: The Evolution Of Heritage-based Hostility On Social Media’. You will undertake research focused on the cultural evolution of archaeological information using advanced text-mining techniques and statistics.

We seek a postdoctoral research associate with a strong background in the deterministic and stochastic modelling of biochemical systems. You will develop new mathematical models of bursty gene expression and signal transduction and fit these to eukaryotic data. You will be a part of the Grima group and work closely with the experimentalists in the Halliday lab at the University of Edinburgh. 

The research goal of this position is to advance our understanding of the interaction of turbulent, stratified rotating fluids with magnetic fields and to examine both the effect of magnetic field on the turbulence and the dynamo effect of the turbulence. The project will be primarily theoretical and computational.

The Fellowship aims to provide a supportive and collegial environment for an early-career researcher to develop their research and submit proposals to secure external research funding (e.g. a 5-year Research Fellowship, such as a Royal Society University Research Fellowship; an Ernest Rutherford Fellowship; a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship or a European Research Council fellowship) and, where appropriate, other external research resources such as computer/facility time.

The research should be in an area aligned with the interests of Professor Steve Tobias. In particular the candidate should be interested in developing and utilising theoretical and computational methods (including Machine Learning) for multi-scale problems in fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics, and have an interest in astrophysical and geophysical fluids.

Precise electrical signalling at a millisecond time scale is critical for healthy functioning of the brain. Future advances in understanding functions and disorders of the brain will require new tools to resolve fast electrical signals in identified cells in freely moving mouse models. Recently developed fluorescent indicators enable electrical signals to be observed with microscopes. However, because current microscopes able to do this are bulky, they can only be used with mice that are restrained, which severely limits their usefulness. To address this, we have been developing miniature microscopes that by incorporating novel imaging sensors are capable of ultra-high frame rate imaging of the electrical activity of populations of neurons in freely moving mice. The next phase of the project will be to 1) validate ultra-fast imaging through single cell electrophysiological recordings in vivo to provide important “ground truth” data and 2) test the technologies in freely behaving mice. The Institute for Condensed Matter and Complex Systems is recruiting one Postdoctoral Research Associate to work with Dr Steven Thomson on the EPSRC funded project “Disorder in Open Quantum Systems”.

The successful candidate will aid in the development of new numerical and analytical tools for the study of open quantum systems in two dimensions, with an emphasis on investigating thermalisation and equilibration in disordered quantum systems. Experience in high-performance computing and GPU acceleration will be beneficial, but not essential. This role offers significant scope for exploring fundamental physics in novel parameter regimes, including those relevant to cutting-edge quantum technologies.
