PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Algebraic Function Fields and Coding Theory – DTU Compute
We are looking for a bright and motivated PhD student for a 3-year fully funded PhD position starting 1 April 2025. The project is financed by Villum Fonden and it is part of the Villum Young Investigator project CREATE “algebraiC cuRvEs in informAtion ThEory: a treasure yet to discover”. It is an excellent opportunity to be involved in advanced research on algebra and coding theory, particularly algebraic function field theory and Algebraic-Geometry codes.
The project CREATE aims to investigate the full potential of algebraic curves and algebraic function field techniques in relation with two very important applications: network communication (rank-metric codes) and distributed cloud storage (locally recoverable codes). To investigate this potential, theoretical results about function fields with many rational places and automorphisms are necessary. The purpose of the PhD position is to construct and classify maximal function fields (particularly introducing the invariant a-number as a parameter to distinguish function fields) and function fields with many automorphisms.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship: Gender Perspectives on Safety of Vulnerable Road Users – DTU Management
The Transport Division at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in the field of road safety in low- and middle-income countries. The successful candidate will join the Human Behaviour section and will work under the supervision of Assistant Professor Felix Siebert, Associate Professor Carlos Lima Azevedo from DTU and Prof. Winnie Mitullah, from the University of Kenya.
You will investigate gender-related safety differences between female and male motorcycle riders (drivers and passengers) using a combined observational and questionnaire survey methodology. Observational surveys will be used to register behavioural data, with the goal to identify safety-related behavioural patterns (similar to doi.org/10.1016/j.aap.2019.01.011, doi.org/10.1016/j.trf.2021.04.005). There is a dedicated focus on gender perspectives, i.e., we are interested in how female and male motorcycle riders might behave differently, and might have different levels of safety due to external factors (doi.org/10.1136/ip-2023-044995). Existing psychological theories, e.g., the Theory of Planned Behaviour will be used and extended to explain differences in safety related behaviours of motorcycle riders. Factors from the subjective questionnaires will be related to the impact of policy and enforcement decisions.
The project is a strategic collaboration between DTU and its Alliance Network partner University of Nairobi (UON). At DTU you will be a member of the Human Behaviour section at the Department for Technology, Management and Economics (DTU Management). You will be based at DTU and will receive your PhD from there. You will visit UON for a fully funded one semester research stay in Nairobi, Kenya, and closely collaborate with Winnie V. Mitullah, Research Professor of Development Studies at the Institute for Development Studies (IDS) and UNESCO UNITWIN Chair, and Dr. Anne Kamau from IDS, UON.
You have an MSc background in Psychology, Human Factors, Civil Engineering, Behavior Economics or a related discipline, with preferably experience in Transport Psychology, Behavioral Modelling, Behavioral Surveys, Statistics, and Field Experiments.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Physics-informed Deep Learning for Automated Analysis of Energy Materials – DTU Energy
This PhD is part of the IMITATION (Image interpretation by taught simulation) project that explores the interplay between physics-based simulations and deep learning. X-ray and neutron imaging are becoming invaluable tools for the non-destructive visualization of the internal structure and composition of energy materials, such as electrodes for batteries and electrolysis cells. However, the analysis of the collected data is still largely performed with classical methods that rely heavily on human inputs. These methods are time-consuming and error-prone, limiting the accuracy of the quantifications and predictions of materials’ properties and performance. Deep-learning methods offer new possibilities for improving the data analysis workflow, but their success requires large amounts of training data, not readily available in the field of X-ray and neutron imaging.
The vision for this PhD project is to use rapid simulations of how X-rays and neutrons interact with materials, to form physically realistic images to be used as the training data for deep learning. Using this approach, we aim to create a flexible and powerful deep-learning framework for quantitative image analysis across different imaging modalities and length scales.
The project offers the chance to work on deep learning with an immediate application, focusing on solving relevant problems in materials for the green energy transition.
You will be affiliated with the section for Structural Analysis and Modeling (SAM) together with other colleagues working with advanced characterization and simulation techniques.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Fellowship – CO2 Conversion to Solids: Transforming Waste into New, Valuable Products – DTU Physics
We are developing fast, cheap, environmentally friendly ways to mineralise CO2, to make stable useful products. We invite enthusiastic candidates to join our team.
As a result of recently funded projects, our research group is looking to fill a PhD position. Our goal is to develop novel methods to mineralise CO2, converting it to products that are stable long term. Even with the very best alternative energy sources, current air and ocean CO2 levels will need 1,000 to 10,000 years to return to preindustrial levels. We will help overcome these limitations through the development of new processes and products.
We are running several projects in parallel, ranging from fundamental investigations of mineral-water-gas properties, through developing predictive models and new experimental methods and instrumentation, to design creative and cost-effective CO2 trapping processes. The need is urgent, the task is challenging, and a multidisciplinary approach is essential – so our group consists of highly motivated scientists and engineers, including chemists, physicists, nanoscientists, mineralogists, geoscientists, engineers and others. Our group includes members at all academic levels, from bachelor students to experienced scientists and engineers.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Numerical Modelling of Cross-Shore Coastal Processes – DTU Construct
The PhD project will play an integral part of the project “SHORE: Simulating coastal HydrOdynamics and particle tRansport procEsses”, financed by the European Research Council. The SHORE project is briefly described below:
Beaches are eroding at many locations around the world, and with the pending climate change (sea level rise and increased storminess in Northern Europe), coastal erosion is expected to potentially worsen. State-of-the-art practical engineering models for predicting sand and particle transport struggle with the cross-shore processes (perpendicular to the beach), and they even have difficulties predicting the sign right (offshore transport vs. onshore transport), in an experimental setting where the boundary conditions are fully known. The shortage of state-of-the-art models also means that the spreading of microplastic particles, which are increasingly polluting the oceans cannot be predicted accurately. As a result, the future shape of the world’s coastal profiles and the fate of microplastic particles in the coastal region are largely unknown. SHORE aims to bridge this knowledge and competence gap and develop the first model capable of accurately simulating both on and offshore transport of sediments and microplastic particles without case-specific calibration.
