PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Population Genomics and Linguistic Evolution 80 %
The NCCR is a Swiss National Center of Competence in Research with the goal of creating a new discipline, Evolutionary Language Science, that targets the past and future of language. The center consists of leading scientists from traditionally separated academic domains, which allows us to harvest the diverse expertise from the humanities, social sciences, computational sciences, natural sciences and medicine towards a broadscale interdisciplinary collaboration.
The similarity of the genetic and linguistic evolution was pointed out by Charles Darwin. In the first phase of the NCCR, we found that both match and mismatch are common world-wide using the database of genomic and linguistic data GeLaTo (GEnes and LAnguage TOgether) (Barbieri et al. PNAS 2023, click for the press release) as well as local case studies (Matsumae et al. Science Advance 2021, Arango-Isaza et al. Curr Biol 2023, Padilla-Iglesias et al. Nature Human Behaviour, 2024). In the second phase, we plan to strengthen population genetic analysis including demographic analysis and between-population tracking of cultural and linguistic exchange using genetic markers to study the evolution of languages and human bio-cultural diversification. This project is a part of the “Population History” Task in the Work Package Stationarity of the NCCR which is lead by Prof. Andrea Migliano (Department of Evolutionary Anthropology; main PI of this position, https://www.migliano-uzh.com/), Prof. Kentaro Shimizu (Department of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies), Prof. Balthasar Bickel (Department of Comparative Language Science), and a planned new professor in genetics of language, in collaboration with Prof. Chiara Barbieri (University of Cagliari) and further members of the NCCR.

In the CliMaH project, we aim to integrate satellite and climate data with a mixed-methods on the ground study to better understand how long-term population movement, trends in urbanization, changes in agricultural productivity, and demographic change link with climate change and health in Mozambique. In particular, we are looking for a PhD candidate to work in WP1 of the CliMaH project, which aims to use remote sensing data (e.g., satellite data) to characterize changes in land use and agriculture in Mozambique. The PhD student will also analyze data from WP2, which uses quantitative household survey data in three to four climate change hotspots to study how climate change and urbanization trends affect maternal and child health outcomes.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position – Satellite-Based Monitoring of Global Glacier Dynamics 80 %
This PhD project focuses on monitoring global glacier change by analyzing satellite imagery to study snowline and albedo variations. The research aims to improve the understanding of glacier dynamics by monitoring changes in glacier facies (such as snow, ice and debris cover), determining snowline and albedo, and analyzing both spatial and temporal trends in these variables in different glaciated regions of the world. Using Google Earth Engine, the project will explore the potential of a variety of geospatial data (e.g. satellite data, topographic data, climatic data) to advance glacier mass balance modelling. In situ observations as well as airborne data will be also used to calibrate and validate spaceborne observations across different spatial scales. The successful candidate will be based at the Department of Geography in Zurich and will be supervised by Hendrik Wulf.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Sleep and Neurodegeneration Research 80 %
We are seeking an outstanding PhD candidate to join our dynamic team investigating the effects of phase-targeted auditory stimulation of slow waves during sleep on disease progression in neurodegeneration.
Animal studies and observational research in humans suggest that deeper sleep is associated with slower progression of neurodegenerative processes. Our group at the University Hospital Zurich (Prof. Christian R. Baumann, Dr. Angelina Maric), in collaboration with the University Children’s Hospital Zurich (Prof. Reto Huber), is preparing to conduct several long-term studies to investigate whether deepening sleep through phase-targeted auditory stimulation of slow waves in patients with Parkinson’s disease, isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD), or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) can modify the progression of neurodegenerative
processes. In these studies, patients will self-administer phase-targeted auditory stimulation nightly at home over an 18-month period. EEG, brain imaging, fluid biomarkers, and clinical assessments will be used as outcome measures.

PhD position summary/title: 3 PhD Positions in Social Anthropology 100 %
The Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies (ISEK) at the University of Zurich is offering three PhD positions within a 4-year research project titled “Dealing with Institutional Volatility: Food Production, Processing and Trade in South-Eastern Qazaqstan”. The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Dr. Peter Finke. Its objective is to study the food industry in South-Eastern Qazaqstan as an interlinked system of production, processing, distribution, and consumption. Rural households and petty entrepreneurs hereby see themselves confronted with a volatile ecological as well as political environment. The project aims to shed light on the institutional challenges and corresponding strategies of the actors involved as well as the impacts on the social fabric in the region.
The PhD projects will focus on three different interrelated sectors within the local and regional food complex by way of a distributed and shared multi-sited approach. Project 1 will focus on agricultural production, looking at individual households and farming enterprises. Project 2 will research in small- and mid-scale food processing factories, primarily in the dairy and meat sector, while project 3 will investigate the gastronomy sector and its socio-economic embeddedness in the regional setting. In addition to that, a postdoctoral researcher will study trade with food products within the region and beyond. She or he will, together with Prof. Finke, also serve as a project coordinator.

PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. Position in Personalized Visual Analytics: Human Preference Elicitation for Ranking-Based Multi-Criteria Decision Support 100 %
Multi-criteria decision support through item ranking is an understudied research direction. Current solutions exhibit considerable limitations, primarily due to their inability to meet the multi-faceted nature of human decision-making. Choosing between thousands of relevant items is a common task, where people are left alone with the need to express and balance multiple desirable preferences at once. Item rankings are a popular and universal approach to structuring unorganized item collections by multiple criteria at the same time. In interactive solutions, people can express multiple preferences, used by algorithms to compute human-centered and personal rankings. Visual Analytics (VA) is a field of research that supports complex human decision-making tasks by bringing together human intellectuality with the computational power of algorithms in effective human-in-the-loop approaches.
In this project, we will demonstrate how cutting-edge VA principles can be transferred to item ranking, to overcome remaining challenges, demonstrate effective and efficient interactive ranking creation solutions, and empower broad audiences. Limitations of ranking systems mainly include their incompatibility for the elicitation of item- and attribute-based preferences, insufficient handling of user-introduced uncertainty, inadequate guidance for engaging with large item sets, lacking interaction histories, inefficient human-centric feedback loops, or a lack of explanations and transparency of ranking algorithms, thus creating a disconnect between the technology and nuanced user needs. Finally, interactive ranking creation does not yet make use of interfaces for eliciting implicit user preferences, e.g., in textual form using large language models.
