A 24-month senior research fellow position is available with Dr David J. Lewis in the Department of Materials  for an ambitious and talented inorganic materials chemist as part of a wider £1.7M EPSRC project, working with teams in the Departments of Chemistry (Winpenny) and Electronic and Electrical Engineering (Boland) at the University of Manchester. 

You will be primarily based in the Manchester Centre for Health Economics (http://research.bmh.manchester.ac.uk/healtheconomics). The successful applicant will join a growing team of leading health economists undertaking research on the supply, organisation, valuation and evaluation of healthcare. They will be expected to make a full contribution to the development of this team and the Greater Manchester PSRC.

The overall purpose is to investigate how to improve the security of the Hotspot JVM and managed languages in general by taking advantage of the Arm Morello architecture. Thus, the job involves helping to complete the port of Hotspot JVM, Graal, Truffle and modern garbage collection algorithms to the Arm Morello architecture as well as prototyping research ideas, evaluate them and write research papers based on the research. ​​​​​​​

A research associate position is available to work on a project studying how signalling filopodia collect and transduce the BMP signal in Drosophila ovarian germline stem cells.  This project will build on our recent progress in this area (Wilcockson and Ashe, Dev Cell 2019) by developing a key research tool for the project.  The successful applicant will join Hilary Ashe’s lab to work on this BBSRC funded project, which represents a collaboration with Shukry Habib, Lausanne.  For further details of research within the Ashe lab, see: http://ashelab.com/.  You should hold or be working towards a PhD or equivalent in a biological science, be highly motivated and have an interest in developmental signalling.  The position is available for 1 year. ​​​​​​​

The research fellow will work in the MoatE project funded by the UK Industrial Challenge Digital Security by Design via InnovateUK. The MoatE project is a cyber-security demonstrator project for Edge Computing. Led by Iceotope Technologies (https://www.iceotope.com/), and collaborating with Avnet (https://www.avnet.com/), the University of Manchester plays a key role in this project providing research expertise in low-power edge systems and Arm-based architectures.

Applications are invited for a Research Associate in Pharmacokinetic Translation PBPK modelling, in the Division of Pharmacy and Optometry. The post will be tenable on a fixed term basis of 24 months in the first instance.

Working under the umbrella of the Centre of Applied Pharmacokinetic Research (CAPKR) group, you will be fully involved in a CAPKR-funded project entitled ‘Liquid Biopsy and Endogenous Biomarkers to enhance or replace specific DDI studies in Patient Populations’. You will hold a PhD in a biomedical, pharmaceutical or systems modelling research area, and have a background in determining activities of drug metabolizing enzymes and/or transporters using different in vitro systems and experience in physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modelling incorporating in vitro-in vivo extrapolation. Emphasis will be placed on a developing publication record.

You will be responsible for coordinating the outreach effort of the programme grant, including communication with stakeholders, the research council and the general public, and manage the delivery of LightForm’s ambitious open science objectives. Working closely with the director and the management team, you will liaise with all researchers in LightForm and across all three institutions, to ensure the effective delivery of the outreach, data sharing and impact objectives of the programme. You will also be responsible for communication and reporting to stakeholders, and monitoring KPIs to ensure compliance with contractual and funding obligations. You will be expected to act as a champion of the LightForm research project and be able to present, at a high level, the research objectives, key findings and innovative management approaches in LightForm at technical meetings such as workshops and conferences.

You will join the Centre for Imaging Sciences and take responsibility for a defined area of research, under the supervision of Prof Sue Astley. You will develop and evaluate software to quantify mammographic density in standard and ultra-low-dose mammograms. Mammographic density is related both to an individual’s risk of developing breast cancer, and to the likelihood that early signs of cancer in a woman’s breast will be detected by mammographic screening. A safe and effective method for assessing breast density in young women will allow personalisation of screening, so those with dense breasts and a high risk of developing breast cancer can be screened using additional imaging modalities, increasing the chance of early detection of signs of abnormality.

The key objective of this project is to carry out a process optimisation and techno-economic assessment using process system engineering tools of gas-solid processes applied to the valorisation of waste gases from steel industry and convert them into valuable products such as biofuel or hydrogen-based stream. The main focus of the research is to develop and operate reactor and process modelling and support the experimental research activity to validate the models, design the experiments and carry out the technology scale-up. The research activity will also include co- supervision PhD students and undergraduate and postgraduate students during their final research project.

The Manchester Centre of Robotics and AI of the University of Manchester is part of the Advanced Machinery Productivity Initiative (AMPI) which is to help regional, industrial growth in the North of England in the connected region of Greater Manchester, Rochdale and Leeds through targeted novel research, e.g. in the development of new soft manipulators, their control, suitable forms of path planning and advanced forms of human-robot interaction. AMPI is being led by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL).

We wish to appoint a Research Associate with expertise in economics or health economics to work on an NIHR-funded study evaluating social prescribing schemes in England and Scotland (https://fundingawards.nihr.ac.uk/award/NIHR134066). This multi-region study aims to map current provision and service configuration and assess whether access, engagement, costs and outcomes vary by delivery model, geography and population characteristics over time. The postholder will use econometric methods and large survey and administrative datasets to further our understanding of health and care. As a researcher working on this Programme you will play a key role in creating successful outcomes that are aligned to stakeholder needs, through applying your expertise in the development and application of statistical and/or machine learning analytics. Reporting to the Director and Deputy Director of the Programme, you will be working within a cross-functional programme team comprising Researchers, Software Engineers, and other domain experts. You will be responsible for working with key stake holders from the programme to understand and translate required insights into appropriate software tools that will connect with data held by NERC. You will review and formulate roadmaps for appropriate data analytics that sit on top of the new Digital Solutions hub, including continual review of methods found across the geosciences. These insights will be used to build Digital Solutions capabilities aligned to user needs.

The Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics (JBCA), part of the department of Physics & Astronomy, seeks a Post-Doctoral Research Associate(s) to work in the area of CMB foregrounds. Manchester has significant involvement in several leading CMB and foreground experiments including the C-Band All-Sky Survey (C-BASS), Simons Observatory (SO), and JAXA’s LiteBird space mission. We are leading several areas, with a particular emphasis on astrophysical foregrounds and systematic effects mitigation. The focus will be on understanding and quantifying foregrounds emission using the latest data (e.g. C-BASS and COMAP), both for CMB foreground removal and for understanding the interstellar medium (e.g. emission mechanisms, Galactic structure, Galactic magnetic field, star formation). Ideally, we are looking for someone who crosses the divide between CMB cosmology and astrophysical foregrounds research. In particular, we are looking to develop a foregrounds pipeline for the LiteBird mission. The successful candidate(s) will have the opportunity to work on one or more of our projects, collaborating with our other postdocs/students, depending on their interest and skills.

A new post has come up to lead on implementing and carrying out research as part of a multicenter national study of prodromal Alzheimer’s disease, the NIHR/MRC funded Deep and Frequent Phenotyping study.  It uses advanced imaging, CSF, blood, and computerised cognitive and gait assessments in preparation of clinical treatment trials.

We wish to appoint a talented, enthusiastic and self-motivated qualitative researcher to join the Digital Health Research Theme within the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration for Greater Manchester (ARC-GM), based at the University of Manchester.

You will need excellent skills in qualitative research methods developed in health or social care settings and a keen interest and/or experience in digital health technologies research.

This position offers the opportunity to contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of innovative digital interventions in health and social care across Greater Manchester, with a focus on evaluating how the introduction of digital technologies impacts decision making and behaviour of patients and clinicians. 

This post relates to a pump priming project which aims to build, validate and implement survey instrument(s) that operationalise gender as a non-binary construct. The purpose in doing so is to better understand how gender, as a social construct, intersects with other factors (e.g. ) in shaping young people’s aspirations and dispositions towards studying  Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. The need for better or more robust conceptualisations and operationalisations (and measures) of gender has been noted in literature across a range of disciplines (including psychology, social statistics) with clear inadequacies noted in the use of binary operationalisations.  In the case of STEM education, this work is paramount given decades of research (including that of the project team’s) that has highlighted how gender mediates over and above achievement in shaping who continues to study STEM subjects beyond compulsory schooling.

The School of Arts, Languages and Cultures invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a full time, temporary post of research associate, tenable from 1st October 2023 until 30th September 2024 for the AHRC funded project Indigenous Youth Subcultures and New Media in Latin America overseen by Dr Ignacio Aguiló (University of Manchester). This project combines social anthropology with Cultural Studies to look at how the Mapuche and Andean Kichwa (Runa) youth use social media platforms to share cultural products (in the broader sense) produced by young Indigenous creators, and how they build subcultural identities around them. For this post, we are looking to appoint an Associate who will mainly be dedicated to the project’s anthropological dimension.​​​​​​​

The Post-Doctoral Research Assistant in Data Science will be appointed jointly by The University of Manchester at Harwell (UoMaH) and STFC. They will be based, and managed, at the Harwell campus by the UoMaH Director and be affiliated to the Department of Computer Science. On the STFC side their work will be supervised by the Head of the Scientific Machine Learning Group. Their work will be split between developing software infrastructure to enable novel data analytics research, and building a network of users and facilities at the Harwell neutron and light sources who are developing techniques using Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to interrogate the big data streams generated by the National Facilities at Harwell. This will facilitate the development of novel automated solutions that are intelligent and capable of handling multidimensional, multi-modal datasets. As such, for this post, we are seeking a ‘hands-on’ data scientist with a background and knowledge of machine learning, applied maths, and data analysis along with strong research software engineering skills. The ideal candidate is someone whose primary focus is developing machine learning-based algorithms, and implementing them in software with relevant data analysis components, and who is keen to apply their skills to further the science performed at the Harwell facilities.

We are seeking a highly skilled and ambitious individual to manage, deliver and co-develop internationally-leading bioanalytical research in collaboration with users at the UoM, from UK academia and industry, and with international partners.  Reporting to Dr Tim Felton, the role will involve sample preparation and analysis on a range of research projects and development of bio-analytical methods.
