(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoc in physics-informed neural networks for solid mechanics

Physics-informed machine learning is emerging as a promising avenue for solving problems in physics and engineering. Particularly, physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) have shown remarkable potential to solve problems governed by differential equations while accounting for measured experimental data. While a strong limitation of PINNs was their low speed, recent research has shown that efficiency and accuracy can be significantly improved by leveraging domain-specific knowledge of the problem at hand. The present project aims to further explore this research direction with a focus on 2D problems involving deformation and fracture in solid materials.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in atmospheric chemistry on investigating the phase behavior of secondary organic aerosol particles

This project aims to develop novel methods to directly probe the phase behavior, i.e., the number and types of phases, in individual aerosol particles, and to explore how it affects their ability to form clouds.

The project will focus on secondary organic aerosol (SOA), a major type of atmospheric particles, that impact atmospheric chemistry, air quality and climate.
SOA particles can respond to changes in atmospheric conditions by undergoing phase separation or mixing. This results in particles with either multiple condensed phases or a single condensed phase, respectively. These changes can also alter the phase state of SOA particles, often described by their dynamic viscosity, causing them to transition between liquid, semi-solid, or solid (glassy) states. In this project, we aim to develop methods to accurately quantify these changes in aerosol phase behavior.

We will deploy microscopy-based techniques to probe the phase behavior of well characterized particles. Through targeted experiments, complex SOA types will be generated in our atmospheric simulation chamber (AURA), where advanced instrumentation is available, from oxidation of different precursor gases.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Fellowship in risk assessment and prioritization and remediation of dumped munitions in the Baltic Sea

In September 2023 during the Our Baltic II conference in Palanga Lithuania – the Ministers of the Environmental from the neighboring the Baltic Sea countries (except from Russia) identified the more than 300.000 of unexploded munitions from the past World Wars as a major threat towards the environmental wellbeing of the Baltic Sea. European waters are widely contaminated with underwater munition, which are causing pollution and preventing economic development in the region. The war remnants include conventional and chemical munitions and much of the conventional munitions can be found in relatively shallow waters, near fishing activities, major shipping routes, and offshore development locations. Two new EU-funded projects, MUNI-RISK (https://muni-risk.eu/) and MMinE-SwEEPER (https://mminesweeper-munition.eu/) seek to advance our understanding of the potential risks marine munition may have in the environment – and hence to support risk management of the risks. MUNI-RISK will generate detailed data on the extent of munitions-related chemical contamination in the Baltic Sea.

The projects will be conducted in close collaboration with a range of universities, research institutes, authorities, commercial companies, and offshore specialists. The project will develop a framework for prioritization of areas for enhanced risk management e.g. remediation, as well as develop how to include dumped munitions in Environmental Impact Assessments: We will ensure that the frameworks are transferable to other European seas – particularly the Black Sea.

(27) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: 2-yr postdoc on human macroecology in a functional trait perspective Aarhus University (re-advertisement)

This postdoc project will be part of the ECONOVO research theme 1: Diversity Dynamics, focused on understanding biodiversity dynamics in novel ecosystems (NEs) past and present.
This position is focused on understanding the diverse roles humans might have in ecosystems globally by applying a functional trait perspective that integrates cross-cultural ethnographic idata (from, for instance, D-PLACE), palaeodemography (from, for instance, HYDE), and estimates of human energy consumption. Humans have evolved the unique, culturally and technologically mediated ability to act in multiple different ecological roles – for instance, as foragers, pastoralists, farmers, industrialists – and these variable socio-economic constellations determine their interactions with the environment.

Our aim is to understand these ecological interactions globally in a data-driven macroecological approach, and to articulate these analyses with projections of future climate, human energy consumption, and human niche dynamics differentiated by socio-economic constellation.

The postdoc is expected to lead an investigation that combines functional trait theory, metabolic theory and energetics, macroecological modelling, and human socio-ecology to better understand the variable roles adopted by human communities practicing different economies within ecosystems, and their impacts on these – past, present, and future.

We aim for the investigation to encompass a temporal scope spanning from the Middle Pleistocene to potential future scenarios.

We are open to hearing the candidate’s take on this and would like the postdoc to contribute ideas and concepts to the project and lead at least two high-quality papers in this research area. We also emphasize the importance of engaging fully in the center’s outreach and educational efforts, while also supporting and encouraging collaborative work with ECONOVO colleagues, including students.
This collaboration involves sharing skills and contributing to problem-solving within the postdoc’s area of expertise.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: RE-ADVERTISEMENT: Postdoc in Spatial Transcriptomics in Cancer

Spatial transcriptomics is an advanced technique that enables researchers to analyze gene expression patterns within intact tissue architectures. By preserving the spatial information of RNA molecules in biological samples, this technology provides insights into gene activation or suppression in specific cells. It is invaluable for understanding complex biological processes and disease mechanisms, making it an essential tool for researchers in various fields. In addition to spatial transcriptomics, we utilize high-throughput RNA-sequencing for genome-wide profiling of all RNA species, including non-coding RNAs, along with a multitude of other standard laboratory techniques.

We are now initiating new projects centered around spatial transcriptomics (cosMx technology) and RNA-sequencing to address key questions about coding and non-coding RNAs in cancer pathobiology with the aim of translating this new knowledge into clinical practice. Many non-coding RNA molecules possess strong gene-regulatory potential, yet the roles of most non-coding RNAs in cancer and other multifactorial diseases remain unclear. These projects aim to unravel the pathobiology of non-coding RNAs in cancer and elucidate novel genetic and epigenetic mechanisms behind aberrant RNA expression in cancer. Moreover, we aim to characterize the molecular functions of selected non-coding RNAs that are pivotal drivers of cancer pathogenesis and potentially translate this knowledge into clinical use through large, well-annotated clinical cohorts.
