The Indigenous and Global Health Research Group (IGHRG) led by Dr. Sangita Sharma, the Canada Research Chair in Population Health, Professor in Indigenous and Global Health Research Group in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta is currently accepting applications for postdoctoral positions with the team. The IGHRG is a multi-disciplinary research group of 25+ staff that was established by Dr. Sharma in 2010. Dr. Sharma and the team have an extensive international background working with over 22 populations in various countries worldwide but now primarily focus on working with Indigenous and/or ethnic minority populations in Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories (NT), and Nunavut (NU). Current funded projects include: assessing health and wellness and access to healthcare services with Indigenous seniors and Elders living in NT; maternal and infant health care and outcomes for Indigenous populations in NT; identifying the barriers to and opportunities for improving access to healthcare services for Indigenous populations in NT to inform culturally appropriate programming to improve patient experiences; capturing the anticipated and unanticipated consequences of COVID-19 preventive measures with Indigenous communities in NU and NT; working with NT Indigenous communities to understand the perspectives of community members toward HPV, HPV vaccination along with attitudes towards and experience with the COVID-19 vaccine; assessing side effects and experience of COVID-19 vaccination among NT and NU Indigenous communities; gathering culturally safe recommendations for increasing trust in public health prevention measures in northern Indigenous communities; and working with 25 NT and NU communities to explore community immunity from COVID-19 and COVID-19 vaccination as well as gather recommendations to support future pandemic preparedness in Arctic Canada. These projects offer exciting opportunities to contribute to the current dynamic health situation and toward improving the health and wellness of Indigenous communities in Canada.

Dr. Suzette Brémault-Phillips (principal investigator) and the Heroes in Mind, Advocacy and Research Consortium (HiMARC), in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta, are looking to fill multiple Postdoctoral Fellow researcher positions, both full-time and part-time. HiMARC is a provincial initiative specializing in health and wellbeing research for military personnel, veterans, public safety personnel and their families. We are committed to improving the health outcomes of these populations through novel research and best clinical practices.

A postdoctoral fellow position is immediately available in the laboratory of Dr. Qiumin Tan, in the Department of Cell Biology at the University of Alberta to study the role of Cajal-Retzius cells in brain development and function. We are especially interested in: (1) the developmental programmed cell death mechanism of Cajal-Retzius cells, (2) the functions of these cells in the adult brain, and (3) the communication of Cajal-Retzius cells with neural and non-neural cell types.

The Department of Oncology within the University of Alberta conducts basic and applied research into cancers and related diseases. This project will involve studying lymphatic disorders. This includes lymphedema and lymphocytic leukemias. The main goal of this research is to understand the molecular mechanisms of lymphedema and leukemia, microenvironmental factors that contribute to disease progression and treatment resistance. The successful fellow will be conduction research in cellular models of disease, animal models of disease and correlated these results with human biospecimens from patients suffering from lymphatic disorders.

One position for post-doctoral fellow is now open in S. Kar’s lab: Dr. S. Kar, affiliated with the Department of Medicine (Neurology), is a neuroscience researcher with vivid interest in Alzheimer disease pathogenesis. His research has been funded by federal organizations including Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). He is seeking one postdoctoral fellow with experience in neuronal culture and/or animal models of neurodegenerative diseases to work on a multidisciplinary project dedicated to establishing therapeutic potential of nanoparticles in the treatment of Alzheimer disease pathology. The research program involves in vitro study as well as cellular and animal models of Alzheimer’s disease. This work ranges from advanced biophysical and cell biology methods to animal behavior.

The Lipid Chemistry Group in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science is looking to fill a 1 year MITACS accelerate postdoctoral position to work in collaboration with a start-up company.  The project involves the development of synthetic pathways to produce biobased compounds which impact superior properties to epoxy resin formulations. 

We are looking for an individual with research experience broadly in the area of energy and environmental systems engineering. Individuals applying for this position should have an interest and some experience in integrated resource planning and modelling focused on energy demand and supply. We are developing environmental footprints (e.g., greenhouse gas emissions, $/tonne of CO₂) of energy demand and supply sectors for a particular jurisdiction. The individual should have some experience working with relevant energy forecasting and planning models (e.g., LEAP, MARKAL). The candidate is expected to carry out research on assigned project(s). Additive Design and Manufacturing Systems Laboratory has an immediate vacancy for a Postdoctoral fellow with direct research and development experience in robotics and Robot Operating System (ROS). Candidates with experience in industrial robotics application to additive manufacturing processes will be preferred. A postdoc position is available immediately to study calcium and redox signaling between the Endoplasmic Reticulum and Mitochondria in the Simmen laboratory (Department of Cell Biology, University of Alberta). The successful applicant will be studying the function of redox-sensitive ER proteins in this mechanism. These proteins localize to ER-mitochondria contact sites dependent on oxidation and reduction of cysteines. A special focus interest will be on the significance of this mechanism for the crosstalk between various CNS cell types, using co-culture approaches. The Climate, Health, and Environment Epidemiology Research (CHEER) Lab at the University of Alberta is seeking a full-time postdoctoral fellow (PDF) in the area of epidemiology, climate change, and environmental health. The successful applicant will work on various projects investigating the impacts of climate change, air pollution, and other environmental exposures on a variety of health and social outcomes. This fellowship will provide the opportunity to contribute and lead various projects in the field of environmental epidemiology while working with and learning from collaborators across various disciplines. The CHEER Lab is a highly interdisciplinary research group grounded in environmental epidemiology, with a research focus on climate change, air pollution, psychosocial health, and how these vary across traditionally underserved and higher risk populations. Our ongoing work often intersects with a variety of other fields and methods, including spatial analysis and health geography, biostatistics, surveillance, demography, and environmental science.  The PDF will work under the direct supervision of Dr. Shelby Yamamoto and be provided with a supportive and collaborative research environment to further hone research skills and expertise, develop and share new research ideas, apply critical and creative thinking to address relevant public health issues, and acquire new skills experiences as a researcher. The PDF will work directly with the PI and Research Coordinator to provide leadership for CHEER research activities, as well as mentorship for graduate students and research assistants within the lab.

The Department of Computing Science, and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), at the University of Alberta have an immediate opening for one postdoctoral fellow to work with Amii Fellow Professor Osmar Zaiane in the area of Artificial Intelligence research. Amii is one of three centers of excellence in the Pan-Canadian AI strategy. The postdoc position is to start as soon as a candidate is identified and will last for a period of two years subject to satisfactory performance.  The postdoctoral fellow will work on a research project related to Machine Malfunction Prediction and Machine Adaptation using Machine Learning. This project investigates effective means to automatically predict machine failures and strategies to adapt a malfunctioning machine to continue its mission before maintenance can be performed. The research applies Machine learning and Data Mining and focuses on Reinforcement Learning techniques to achieve these goals. For the postdoc position, we look for someone with sufficient knowledge and research experience in machine learning, reinforcement learning and GFlowNets.

The appointee will have the opportunity to work with both local and national multi-disciplinary teams to enhance the health care outcomes of at-risk infants. The Animal Cognition Research Group (ACRG) in the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Science, at the University of Alberta is hiring a full-time postdoctoral researcher to lead behavioural/neural research examining how learning and cognitive abilities allow animals to solve problems they face in the wild (e.g., foraging, how to know what nest to build). Our work is currently focused on variation in cognitive abilities (e.g., sex differences in learning based on nest-building history, among-individual variation in cognitive abilities), social learning in foraging and nest building, and the trade-off between asocial and social information use. We are also looking to expand our work to include an invertebrate model system(s). The ACRG is funded by an NSERC Discovery Grant, the Faculty of Science, and a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) to the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Lauren Guillette. Our laboratory space includes free-flight colony rooms for zebra finches, extensive laboratory space for customizable behavioural testing, and a full histology and microscopy suite. We have laboratory space designated for team members to work/eat lunch which includes computer banks to download/stream videos from test rooms, general working space, projector, white-board, and team meetings. We also have access to two large and six small sound attenuating chambers and custom-designed acoustic operant discrimination chambers and a multi-choice playback chamber. The ACRG currently has three graduate students, one post-doctoral researcher, several undergraduate honours thesis students, and several independent studies students.

One Postdoctoral Fellowship position is available in the Policy, Location and Access in Community Environments (PLACE) Research Lab (www.placeresearchlab.com) in the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta, Canada. The applicant will work with Dr. Candace Nykiforuk (Principal Investigator of the PLACE Research Lab).   The research conducted within the PLACE Research Lab seeks to contribute to better understanding the people-policy-place relationships in chronic disease prevention and interventions.  Engaged scholarship is a core principle of the Lab. Work in the PLACE Lab involves qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methodologies, community-based participatory research, literature reviews, policy analysis, and GIS mapping.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute significantly to the successful conduct of multiple activities prioritized by the Scientific Office of the Provincial Seniors Health and Continuing Care. In consultation with the supervisor, the Postdoctoral Fellow will lead the design and implementation of knowledge synthesis and translation activities related to the strategic directions of the Integrated Provincial Team. Reporting to Dr. Andrea Haqq, Principal Investigator, the main focus of the Post-Doc position will be to complete a cross-sectional study with the aim to conduct untargeted metabolomics analyses to explore metabolic processes and pathways that may link gut microbiota alterations to host health in adolescents with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS).  The specific objectives of the study are (1) to comprehensively characterize the serum metabolome and gut microbiome in adolescents with and without PWS; and (2) to explore functional correlations between PWS metabolomic signature, gut microbiota profile, and clinical parameters of metabolic dysfunction (insulin resistance [Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance, HOMA-IR], dyslipidemia, and more).

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral researcher position in the area of transportation engineering to work under Dr. Karim El-Basyouny, Professor of Transportation Engineering and City of Edmonton Research Chair in Urban Traffic Safety. The focus of his research program is on remote sensing applications in roadway infrastructure digitization.
