Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Position In Computational Psychiatry (Real-World Applications of AI and Machine Learning on Health Data)
The successful applicants will participate and lead research that applies advanced statistical, AI and ML techniques to large populational health data of patients with mental and substance use disorders. Current and potential projects include two main directions: 1) Individualized prediction of mental and substance use disorders and overdoses and associated health and economical outcomes in the population using health, survey and biological data; 2) Implementation of ML models through interactions with multiple stakeholders and people with living and lived experiences.
The successful applicants will have the opportunity of supervised access to several public and government/institution owned datasets, including large (over 4 million people) de-identified health data from Alberta. In this context, there are excellent opportunities for shared mentorship and collaboration with several PIs in psychiatry and computing science, including the Alberta machine intelligence institute (Amii).

The P-ONE group at the UofA is leading the Canadian efforts towards the design of the trigger systems of the experiment, specialized calibration systems, key electronics, optical characterization of the sensors, and the study of the physics potential of a neutrino telescope in the Pacific Ocean. The successful candidate will take a leading role in developing the physics program and final design of P-ONE and will also spearhead the construction of an integration site for P-ONE sensors at the U of A.
The Neutrino Telescopes group at the UofA is a member of P-ONE as well as IceCube, the largest neutrino telescope in operation. The group currently consists of four professors (Carsten Krauss, Roger Moore, Steve Robertson and Juan-Pablo Yáñez), one postdoctoral fellow and seven graduate students. It is supported locally by engineers and technicians who are experienced in the development of particle detectors. Up to four undergraduate students regularly join our group for research terms, in particular during summertime. A successful candidate will dedicate their time to research and assisting with the mentoring of students. Postdocs at the U of A do not have teaching duties.
The appointment can be extended for up to four years, starting with a two-year contract and renewal subject to performance and funding. Reporting to Dr. Carole Estabrooks, Scientific Director, Translating Research in Elder Care, the main focus of the Post-Doctoral Fellow position will be to undertake advanced statistical modeling and analysis of a longitudinal dataset collected over 18 years in the continuing care home sector (LTC homes). The database includes survey data from facilities, care units, and multiple levels of care staff and administrative data from routine assessments of care home residents. Linkages to external data are also desired to answer specific questions of policy relevance.
Specific aims will include: (1) exploring the impact of overlapping socio-demographic characteristics on staff health and well-being, performance measures and resident outcomes (2) conducting a multi-methods study (recently collected qualitative data and multiple years of survey data) addressing one or more performance measures, and (3) using machine learning techniques to identify thus far unidentified patterns in the data.

The university is considered a “Comprehensive academic and research university” (CARU), which means that it offers a range of academic and professional programs, which generally lead to undergraduate and graduate level credentials.
The university comprises four campuses in Edmonton, the Augustana Campus in Camrose, and a staff centre in downtown Calgary. The original north campus consists of 150 buildings covering 50 city blocks on the south rim of the North Saskatchewan River valley, directly across from downtown Edmonton. 39,000 students from Canada and 150 other countries participate in 400 programs in 18 faculties.
The University of Alberta is a major economic driver in Alberta. The university’s impact on the Alberta economy is an estimated $12.3 billion annually, or five per cent of the province’s gross domestic product.
