PhD position summary/title: PhD Scholarship in Piezophotoacoustic Technology for Minimally Invasive Endoscopy – DTU Health Tech

If you are establishing your career as a scientist and you have the ambition to develop groundbreaking technologies for advanced diagnostics for the body and multifunctional endoscopy, this is the right research project for you.

The PhD research project aims to explore and develop probes for ex-vivo and in-vivo applications for tissue imaging, classification and identification by exploiting piezoelectric materials and transducers combined with photoacoustic technology. The technology will be based on single optical fibers and bundles of fibers, where the acoustic generation is mainly photoacoustic by nanosecond pulsed laser exciting thermal and piezoelectric expansion in fiber-integrated materials. Piezoelectric materials will be employed for both enhancing the photoacoustic generationa and for sensing the backscattered ultrasound signals.

You will join a laboratory with expertise in photonics, piezoelectric materials and device fabrication methods for sensors and actuators, working under the supervision of Prof. Massimo De Vittorio. You will be a part of the IDUN Center of Excellence, led by Prof. Anja Boisen at DTU Department of Health Technology (DTU Health Tech).  IDUN is a highly cross-disciplinary research center with over 50 members, that focuses on development of micro and nanotechnology based sensors, detection systems and drug delivery devices.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Optimization Frameworks for Integrating Efficiency and Equity in Transportation Planning – DTU Management

The Transport Division of the Department of Technology, Management and Economics (DTU Management) at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a 3-year PhD position to work at the intersection of transportation science, operations research, and transport economics.

The PhD position is part of a strategic collaboration between the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Cornell University. It offers you the opportunity to begin your career as a researcher and scientist, deepen your knowledge and skills across several disciplines, and gain exposure to an international network of researchers.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in novel magnetic levitation – DTU Energy

In this PhD project we are looking for a PhD student to help us understand the physics of the levitation phenomenon and to study its stability, both experimentally and theoretically. In preliminary works, we have showed that, despite gyroscopic stabilization, the levitation phenomenon can eventually destabilize. The duration of the stable levitation regime is affected by various factors such as rotational speed and relative position and orientation of the two magnets. A key aim in this project is thus to understand the cause of instabilities and to realize a truly stable levitation regime. This PhD project is an alliance-PhD project together with Technical University Eindhoven (TU/e) where you will spend up to six months working with Prof. Lomonova’s group with the goal of carrying stability-enhancing mechanisms from actively stabilized magnetic levitation to the novel rotating levitation phenomenon.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in NMR for energy materials – DTU Chemistry

A 3-year PhD position is available at the Department of Chemistry, DTU, in experimental studies of ion transport and ion interactions in battery electrolytes, where you will learn and utilise a range of advanced electrochemical and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. The project will be supervised by Professor Esben Thormann and co-supervisor Assistant Professor Leo W. Gordon. The project is expected to commence on January 1 or close to this date.

As the battery field matures, new electrolytes will be required to target specific applications and materials. In particular, as we consider the use of batteries under more extreme conditions, more must be understood about the temperature-dependent transport mechanisms at play through the electrolyte. It is challenging to understand these systems under operation and without perturbation of the sample. Furthermore, species-specific information is critical to appropriately attribute performance changes to electrolyte modification. Therefore, a chemically sensitive, non-destructive technique is needed to gain deep understanding of the transport and chemical mechanisms at play.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in AI-Driven Design of Selective Inhibitors for Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs) – DTU Bioengineering

This PhD project will focus on designing and validating de novo protein inhibitors against human MMPs. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are key regulators of extracellular matrix remodeling, and their dysregulation is implicated in numerous diseases, including cancer, chronic inflammation, and fibrosis. Aberrant MMP activity can drive tissue destruction, pathological remodeling, and disrupted cell signaling, making them critical yet complex targets for therapeutic intervention. Despite significant efforts, therapeutics targeting MMPs have largely failed in clinical settings due to issues like poor selectivity across the MMP family and dose-limiting side effects.

Recent advances in AI-driven protein design offer new opportunities to revisit the long-standing challenge of selectively targeting MMPs. The project will use state-of-the-art AI-based protein design tools to generate and prioritize inhibitor candidates with high predicted affinity and selectivity. These designs will then be experimentally validated through a combination of affinity binding assays, enzymatic activity measurements, biophysical characterization, mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics, and functional studies. Under the joint supervision of Assoc. Prof. Timothy P. Jenkins and Asst. Prof.  Konstantinos Kalogeropoulos, you will join a vibrant, multidisciplinary team to push the boundaries of therapeutic protein engineering.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Evidence Synthesis and Risk-Benefit Assessment of Sustainable Diets – DTU Food

Is your ambition to be part of an international research group? Are you interested in conducting research in the field of public health and dietary patterns? Then, we want to hear from you. This project focuses on sustainable diets for evidence-based public health advice.

Diet is a focal point for climate change since food systems are major contributors to greenhouse-gas emissions. Quantitative risk-benefit assessments (RBAs) of transitions to more sustainable diets are therefore highly valuable in aiding authorities, such as the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, to make decisions regarding interventions on sustainable diets. This PhD project bridges evidence synthesis and RBA of sustainable diets for public-health advice.

RBAs rely on data provided by systematic reviews reporting on associations between exposures and health outcomes. However, the supporting systematic reviews can become outdated quickly, particularly when review conclusions are highly sensitive to just one or a few studies. The living systematic review is an emerging approach for improved evidence synthesis that uses frequent updating to include new evidence as soon as it becomes available. Using data from living systematic reviews in RBAs could lead to more valid assessments and living support systems to public health decisions.
