Computational Scattered Light Imaging (ComSLI) is a highly promising new imaging technique that resolves nerve fiber pathways and their crossings with micrometer resolution. While other scattering techniques raster-scan the tissue with a light beam and measure the distribution of scattered light behind the sample, ComSLI uses a reverse setup: The whole tissue section is illuminated from many different angles and the normally transmitted light is measured, thus enabling much higher resolutions and requiring only standard optical components (LED light source and camera). Our lab aims at further developing ComSLI and exploiting applications beyond neuroscience.

Imaging distributions of radiolabeled molecules using PET and SPECT scaners is key for discovering mechanisms of disease, new pharmaceuticals and diagnostic tracers. The application of radiotracers that combine a predictive biomarker with a therapeutic agent -theranostic tracers– and the demand for multi-tracer imaging are witnessing an impressive growth. This position aims to design and implement secure solutions for anomaly detection in security/trust management, zero trust management based on network packet meta-tagging and the principles of least privilege, micro segmentation, device access control, lateral movement prevention, and multi-factor authentication. The position is supported by the Horizon Europe project MLSysOps. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work closely with world-class researchers at TU Delft and our industrial collaborators in Europe. 

OoC systems are microfluidic cell culture devices that recapitulate in vivo-like microenvironments to support the expression of properties and functions of human tissues and organs. Such microphysiological systems represent more realistic models than existing in vitro cell cultures, which should enhance pre-clinical screening of the effect of drugs and other compounds on the human body. In the past five years, the ECTM research within the NOCI consortium has introduced significant technological innovations in geometry, actuation, sensing and readout for OoC. Our grand, multi-disciplinary challenge is building on top of the knowledge and expertise matured so far to bring OoC technology to the next level. This will be achieved by devising novel materials, actuation and sensing solutions to stimulate and monitor organ properties in wafer-scale microfabricated platforms.

The Cybersecurity (CYS) group at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) conducts research in a range of cybersecurity topics, including, secure data analytics, cryptography, privacy, and network security. The department of Human-Centered Design at TU Delft is looking for an enthusiastic postdoc to develop tools that can help anticipate the effects of advanced technologies on society, particularly the Ethical, Legal, and Societal Aspects (ELSA) of quantum technologies. The postdoc will design, develop and validate generative tools to help diverse stakeholders produce future visions for technologies, in particular quantum computing, quantum networks, and quantum sensors. Current practice in the construction of scour protection around (mono)piles for Offshore Wind Turbines (OWT) foundations is placement of the rock layers in two separate operations. Consequently, the Rock Dumping Vessel (RDV) for installing the scour protection needs to visit each wind turbine location two times. For cost, efficiency and logistical reasons, it is highly advantageous to place the scour protection on the seabed in one operation before installation of the offshore foundation.

Your main objective will be to explore and numerically evaluate design and operational scenarios for optimizing the pile penetration process. This entails, firstly, developing Discrete Element Model that captures and predicts the penetration forces required to penetrate scour protection layers. To this end you will develop calibrated and verified DEM simulations based on the extensive experimental campaign of the OPIS-1 project. Secondly, this model will also be used as input for the evaluation of the pile tip integrity while penetrating through the scour layers of different thicknesses and with different gradings.

This postdoctoral position is an opportunity to go beyond current approaches to studying the impact of cloud and mobile infrastructures. The candidate is invited to study empirically how these computational infrastructures expand into public organizations and to evaluate whether current digital policies (e.g., Cloud-first policies in the public sector) are adequate in responding to their impact on the administration of justice. To do so, the project takes a political economy emphasis and a materialist approach. It aims to explore the technical, organizational and institutional transformations brought about by the introduction of computational Infrastructures with an eye on how these come to shape the administration of justice.

The job position is for a Post-Doc researcher in the Architectural Facades & Products research group (AF&P). The Architectural Facades & Products research group at TU Delft, has been conducting applied research for the last 15 years, via numerous national and international research projects on multifunctional façade construction, refurbishment, additive manufacturing, circularity and product service systems.

The TU Delft has the ambition to transform its campus into a sustainable campus. The circular economy’s (CE) principles are seen as a solution to both challenges. The CE strives for a closed loop of materials and products to end the linear economy, a slowing down of the speed of the circle to use materials and products as long as possible, and a geographical as small as possible circle to use as much as possible local materials and products. Dit planologische onderzoek zal gestalte krijgen via een reeks van interviews met belangrijke stakeholders tijdens voettochten dwars door Noord-Nederland, waarbij gezond oud worden als richtsnoer wordt genomen en het dynamische landschap als belangrijke fysieke conditie geldt. In het onderzoek zullen actuele landschappelijke opnamen worden gecombineerd met historische studie (mede door de RUG) en input zijn voor de ontwikkeling van ruimtelijke scenario’s voor Noord-Nederland.

In the METATOOL project, you will be at the forefront of developing awareness-capable robots. This highly experimental and novel project combines traditional symbolic models with computational models of synthetic metacognition/awareness. In METATOOL we link awareness and tool creation: making new tools to resolve a problem requires an extended form of awareness, and there is a parallel between our first toolmaking ancestors and robots of the future. In this project, you will create the symbolic framework, an ontology, using archaeological and neuroscientific data on tool making.

The researcher will work in a team of experimentalists and theorists who share the common goal to imaging at the nanometer scale. She/he will work on simulation/theory of image formation and parameter estimation. The image formation description is based on the so-called 4pi microscope where the self-interference of the fluorescent emission can be used to estimate the axial position of a single emitter with nano meter precision. To this end the emission light is split into 4 channels (by polarization beam splitters) and the respective intensities are indicative for the axial position. As long as the emitter is free to rotate during one camera frame, a rotational symmetric point spread function (PSF) will be recorded, but if the emitter is fixed (due to conformational embedding or freezing of the medium) the PSF will reflect the dipole character of the emission and will depend on the 3D orientation of the single molecule emitter. In addition (field dependent) aberrations will influence the shape of the PSF. This requires the estimation model to reflect the forward imaging process perfectly and include all relevant parameters, such that a fit with many free parameters still converges. We want to build on our expertise in (maximum likelihood) estimation theory in combination with Cramer-Rao lower bound analysis to find the best way to tackle the problem at hand. Based on the results, we can set requirements on the tolerances for e.g. the alignment of objectives and the beam path to ensure at the end the most optimal localization precision.

Optical nanoscopy is a super-resolution microscopy technique to study subcellular structures and function via specifically targeted fluorescent labels in molecular biology. Localisation microscopy in particular offers a much better resolution (~10-50 nm) than conventional diffraction limited microscopy (~250 nm). This project aims at shifting the resolution obtainable in an optical light microscope even further towards 1 nm. The researcher will work in a team of experimentalists and theorists who share the common goal to imaging at the nanometer scale. She/he will work as an experimentalist designing and performing experiments with cryo fluorescent microscopy. In order to achieve very high spatial resolutions from single molecule emitters in 3D will be use a so-called 4pi setup with two opposing objectives. In addition the wavefront of the light must not be disturbed by optical aberrations. In reality such aberrations are always present, but only at our targeted high resolution at cryogenic temperatures, do they play a crucial role. Therefore the candidate will incorporate adaptive optics instrumentation and algorithms to measure the wavefront distortion and subsequently correct the distortions. 

To contribute to a Horizon Europe Research and innovation project (15 partners from 10 countries) on Female-Led Innovation in Agriculture and Rural Areas TU Delft is hiring a postdoc.

We are hiring a post-doc candidate to support us in our roles in the Horizon Europe project DEMO-Blog on the structure and use of digital building logbooks (DBLs) that support energy efficient and sustainable buildings. The development of DBLs is supported by many European policies. There are several existing DBLs with different functionalities, different data structures, different ownership models and different users. You will be working on some content related parts of the project and support TU Delft in its role of scientific management of the project. In DEMO-BLog 5 DBL’s in different countries will be demonstrated and evaluated. This will lead to insights and recommendations for the further development of these DBLs and and the development of new DBLs in other countries.

This project will run under the supervision of prof. Ruud van Ommen in the chemical engineering department of TU Delft. It aims at developing scalable approaches for depositing nanostructured materials on large-area substrates, to be used in electrochemical conversions. In this project, you will work on combining atomic layer deposition (a gas-based method) and nano ink spraying (a liquid-based method) with industrially applicable roll-to-roll technology. In this way, we will enable the production of large areas of membranes and electrodes for electrochemical conversions with nano-scale precision. We will combine experimental work with modelling to study the scale-up potential and assess economic viability. Since we build on the strengths of the two partnering university groups (the group of prof. Ruud van Ommen at TU Delft and the group of prof. Doris Segets at the University of Duisburg-Essen) together with industrial partners, we will be able to make quick steps forward. There are two positions available: one focusing on experimental work, and one with the emphasis on modelling at the device scale.

To operate our infrastructure in an optimal way, it is important to better understand the behavior of existing reinforced concrete land tunnels exposed to fire. There is an increasing need to make well-thought decisions that have a strong scientific basis and that serve as input for a cost-benefit analysis to society.

Wind farm control and optimization are fundamental research areas, where the major challenges arise from the complex and coupled fluid dynamics, inexact environmental models and uncertain interference between turbines, especially because upstream turbines generate an aerodynamic wake that reduces the wind speed and increases turbulence for the downstream wind turbines. In this complex scenario, the scientific aim of this research project is to devise an online optimization framework for multi-agent, uncertain and dynamic environments that is applicable to offshore wind farm optimization, towards achieving the most efficient trade off between maximal power generation of the wind farm and minimal mechanical stress of the individual turbines.

In this postdoc project, you will develop novel tools for the operation of chemical processes with AI. The project is the beginning of a long-term collaboration with industrial partners that provide operational data and process information. Also, you will get access to a pilot plant that will facilitate the development of AI methods and new inline sensor development. You will use the operational data and process topology information to develop a digital twin for optimal operation. The process of interest is a spray drying process. Spray drying is one of the most applied methods in the food, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries to continuously transform liquid-solid mixtures (slurries) into solid particles.

In this project we will study the mechanisms by which DNA repair proteins organize themselves during the repair of DNA damage by novel single-molecule and super-resolution microscopy techniques in living cells. The postdoctoral researcher will perform live-cell microscopy experiments and contribute to image analysis. This project will be part of a network of postdocs working on projects that converge research done at TU Delft with Erasmus MC.

To accelerate the energy transition, the capturing and re-using CO2 as a resource is indispensable. Our group has developed an electrochemical technology to capture CO2 from water or air, via bipolar membrane electrodialysis. In this way, we are able to tap CO2 from the atmosphere and balance the hard-to-abate, decentralized emissions. This technology has been identified as a game changer for deploying negative emission technology, which is a missing link in reducing climate change and closing the carbon cycle. You can read more about electrochemical CO2 capture principles in our papers in Energy & Environmental Science and Nature Catalysis. Within TU Delft, we collaborate with industrial partners and multiple research groups in the e-Refinery institute, where we aim to bring novel electro-conversion technologies to large scale application. This particular research is in close collaboration with the tech-company HyET.

Although there is significant progress related to electrochemical utilisation of CO₂, the field of carboxylation has been lacking. E-CARB is developing a showcase for a novel electrochemical utilization route of CO₂, renewable electricity and circular bio-feedstock for the production of adipic acid, a precursor of nylon 6,6 polymer. E-CARB gathers a consortium of academic experts and companies along the nylon 6,6 polymer value chain from Germany and the Netherlands. You will work together with a team of leading experts from TNO, TU Delft and Frauenhofer on the development of an electrochemical carboxylation route using CO₂ and butadiene as starting materials. As a postdoc, you will be aiming to achieve the exciting goal of experimental proof of concept.
