Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Synthetic cell division
Living cells are highly complex systems made of countless lifeless molecular components. We do not understand how these interact to form a living cell that sustains itself, grows and divides. The BaSyC initiative is a collaborative 10-year research program that aims to understand ‘how life works’ by building an autonomous self-reproducing synthetic cell from the bottom up. As a container, we use giant unilamellar vesicles, which are cell-sized, lipid bilayer-enclosed reaction compartments that can be visualized by real-time microscopy and directly manipulated using biophysical tools. The Koenderink and Dekker labs study the process of cell division, which requires constriction of the cell into a dumbbell-shape, followed by neck abscission to split the cell into two daughter cells. Since the mechanism of abscission is still poorly understood, it remains a big challenge in the synthetic cell field to achieve robust cell division.

Postdoc summary/title: PostDoc Biomedical Imaging with Scattered Light
Computational Scattered Light Imaging (ComSLI) is a highly promising new imaging technique that resolves nerve fiber pathways and their crossings with micrometer resolution. While other scattering techniques raster-scan the tissue with a light beam and measure the distribution of scattered light behind the sample, ComSLI uses a reverse setup: The whole tissue section is illuminated from many different angles and the normally transmitted light is measured, thus enabling much higher resolutions and requiring only standard optical components (LED light source and camera). Our lab aims at further developing ComSLI and exploiting applications beyond neuroscience.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc DEM Modeling of Monopile Penetration Into Course Scour Protection Layers for Offshore Wind Installation (OPIS-1 project)
Current practice in the construction of scour protection around (mono)piles for Offshore Wind Turbines (OWT) foundations is placement of the rock layers in two separate operations. Consequently, the Rock Dumping Vessel (RDV) for installing the scour protection needs to visit each wind turbine location two times. For cost, efficiency and logistical reasons, it is highly advantageous to place the scour protection on the seabed in one operation before installation of the offshore foundation.
Your main objective will be to explore and numerically evaluate design and operational scenarios for optimizing the pile penetration process. This entails, firstly, developing Discrete Element Model that captures and predicts the penetration forces required to penetrate scour protection layers. To this end you will develop calibrated and verified DEM simulations based on the extensive experimental campaign of the OPIS-1 project. Secondly, this model will also be used as input for the evaluation of the pile tip integrity while penetrating through the scour layers of different thicknesses and with different gradings.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doc Circular Asset Management and Procurement
We invite applications for a two-year full-time Postdoc position on the theme of Circular Asset Management and Procurement. The TU Delft has the ambition to transform its campus into a sustainable campus. To achieve this, the TU Delft cooperates with the faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment’s Circular Built Environment hub and Campus Real Estate (CRE). The TU Delft campus is a large campus with a large amount of buildings and infrastructure that constantly needs to adapt to new requirements, and expand. However, building, renovation and maintenance tasks become increasingly a challenge due to the negative ecological impact and the societal turmoil of a vast decreasing availability of materials. The circular economy’s (CE) principles are seen as a solution to both challenges. The CE strives for a closed loop of materials and products to end the linear economy, a slowing down of the speed of the circle to use materials and products as long as possible, and a geographical as small as possible circle to use as much as possible local materials and products. The postdoc researcher will focus on the procurement, new guidelines, processes, tenders, and existing suppliers of the CRE, Finance and Strategic Development and how this offers opportunities for reducing emissions and ecological impact in general.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc/Researcher – policies for just sustainability transitions and EU territorial instruments
We are inviting applications for a position of a researcher in the Department of Urbanism.
The researcher will join an interdisciplinary team working on several research projects. The main tasks for the researcher is to contribute to two core projects:
- ‘Democratising jUst Sustainability Transitions’ (DUST), a Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action project led by TU Delft. The DUST project will develop and operationalise novel participatory instruments for proactive and strategic citizen engagement in sustainability transitions at the regional scale. It will combine design-led territorial tools with digital tools for citizen deliberation at scale. The project addresses a defining societal and democratic challenge for Europe, which is to hear the voices of least engaged communities, especially in structurally weak regions dependent on energy-intensive industries, which will be most affected by transitions towards a more sustainable future. Building on the concept of ‘active subsidiarity’, the project will employ an innovative mix of research methods, and experimental citizen participation, to understand the determinants of participation in decision-making on sustainability transitions at different levels of government, and to develop effective policy recommendations for inclusive engagement of the civil society in anticipation of sustainable regional futures.
- Ex-post evaluation of EU Cohesion Policy programmes 2014-2020, examining the implementation of instruments that support integrated territorial development. In this project, led by the European Policies Research Centre at the University of Strathclyde, the TU Delft team is involved inter alia in case study research and is responsible production of country and thematic fiches on territorial instruments presenting the main findings and of a ‘cookbook’ bringing together the key lessons and recommendations from the research.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc: Optical Nanoscopy
The researcher will work in a team of experimentalists and theorists who share the common goal to imaging at the nanometer scale. She/he will work on simulation/theory of image formation and parameter estimation. The image formation description is based on the so-called 4pi microscope where the self-interference of the fluorescent emission can be used to estimate the axial position of a single emitter with nano meter precision. To this end the emission light is split into 4 channels (by polarization beam splitters) and the respective intensities are indicative for the axial position. As long as the emitter is free to rotate during one camera frame, a rotational symmetric point spread function (PSF) will be recorded, but if the emitter is fixed (due to conformational embedding or freezing of the medium) the PSF will reflect the dipole character of the emission and will depend on the 3D orientation of the single molecule emitter. In addition (field dependent) aberrations will influence the shape of the PSF. This requires the estimation model to reflect the forward imaging process perfectly and include all relevant parameters, such that a fit with many free parameters still converges. We want to build on our expertise in (maximum likelihood) estimation theory in combination with Cramer-Rao lower bound analysis to find the best way to tackle the problem at hand. Based on the results, we can set requirements on the tolerances for e.g. the alignment of objectives and the beam path to ensure at the end the most optimal localization precision.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc: Optical Nanoscopy at Cryogenic Temperatures
Optical nanoscopy is a super-resolution microscopy technique to study subcellular structures and function via specifically targeted fluorescent labels in molecular biology. Localisation microscopy in particular offers a much better resolution (~10-50 nm) than conventional diffraction limited microscopy (~250 nm). This project aims at shifting the resolution obtainable in an optical light microscope even further towards 1 nm. The researcher will work in a team of experimentalists and theorists who share the common goal to imaging at the nanometer scale. She/he will work as an experimentalist designing and performing experiments with cryo fluorescent microscopy. In order to achieve very high spatial resolutions from single molecule emitters in 3D will be use a so-called 4pi setup with two opposing objectives. In addition the wavefront of the light must not be disturbed by optical aberrations. In reality such aberrations are always present, but only at our targeted high resolution at cryogenic temperatures, do they play a crucial role. Therefore the candidate will incorporate adaptive optics instrumentation and algorithms to measure the wavefront distortion and subsequently correct the distortions.
