Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Position in Recycling of Hydrogen Storage Materials
Hydrogen is becoming one of the key energy carriers for the future to deal with the challenge of climate change and achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, also because it can help to compensate for the intermittency of renewable energy resources, while it can be sustainably produced from e.g. solar and wind power through the electrolysis of water. Large-scale usage of H2, however, will necessitate its storage at massive scales. Multiple H2 storage options exist, among which through the production and use of NaBH4, associated with the regeneration of the spent fuel NaBO2. It is the purpose of this research project to develop NaBH4 as circular H2 storage option by modernizing the Brown-Schlesinger process.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher Perpetrators’ Heritage, Material Cultures and Imaginaries
The postdoc project investigates how sites connected to World War II perpetrators (party leaders, army commanders, etc.) are preserved and memorialized as well as how they narrate the lives and actions of perpetrators. Over the last years, the fields of heritage and memory studies have focused increasingly on perpetrators as the protagonists of trauma narratives, investigating their legacy and responsibility. The project contributes to these debates by enlarging the theoretical and epistemological reflections on victimhood and perpetration by considering testimonials, narratives and the implicated role of spaces from a comparative, transnational and transmedia approaches in diverse heritage domains (trauma sites and (digital) museums, memorials, birthplaces, bunkers, housing around sites of genocides, villas and homes and in documentary images and photographic and audiovisual archives) to understand how perpetrators’ heritage and environments become sites of memory practice that galvanize ethical reflection on the past in Europe and beyond (The Netherlands, Italy, Germany and Japan).

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher Global Perspectives on Platforms
This postdoc project, proposed by the Global Digital Cultures (GDC) research priority area https://globaldigitalcultures.uva.nl/, aims to expand the horizon of platform studies research. The objectives are to build a global scholarly network that develops research on platforms in particular regions, most prominently Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and that uses this research as an opportunity for theory building. Rather than developing universalizing theories based on case studies in the US and Europe, the idea is to diversify the geographies of theory. To understand how platforms affect social and cultural relations, and how they employ machine learning in doing so, we need to multiply our frames of reference beyond contexts that privilege Silicon Valley and its cultural ideals of individualism and libertarianism.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher Platform (Sub)cultures
The postdoc position in the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis lies in the area of ‘platform (sub)cultures’, which refers to both public-facing, mainstream social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube, and anonymous ones such as Reddit and 4chan. The study of platform culture often revolves around the notion of ‘platform vernaculars’ which are variously defined as the specific ‘participatory culture’, ‘discursive creativity’, ‘new media literacy’ and other practices and expressions of online belonging and in-grouping. Platform ‘subcultures’ range from fan cultures to forms of ‘dark participation’, especially by the alternative right. One of the more active areas of study is meme culture, known as a special ‘internet phenomenon’, where creative expression as well as political engagement take place through image macros, one- and two-liners of text overlaid upon an image. Memes are among the most engaged-with content in social media and media forms (such as online news) are continually ‘memefying’ their stories. Another active area of study concerns platform analytics and how they drive attention and platform stickiness. Friend, like and other counts drive online dynamics and symbolic power and also lead to their fakery, such as the purchasing of fake followers. Other areas of study include influencer culture as well as digital nomads. Staging oneself into being (on Instagram, for example) is studied both in terms of ‘visibility labour’ (how to look) but also as ‘relational labour’ (how to relate). Labouring to build and maintain a fan base is studied with reference to platform affordances as well as aesthetics.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Position on Relic-neutrino Detector Development
Neutrino’s that were released one second after the Big Bang are still omnipresent today. Each second billions of these neutrinos fly through each of us. However, they have never been directly observed due to their extremely low energy. At the University of Amsterdam and the Dutch Institute for Subatomic Physics (Nikhef) we have started a project to investigate these so called relic neutrinos. Within the context of the PTOLEMY international consortium we will develop new techniques to observe these neutrinos when they are captured on a beta emitting nucleus. We will work on the detection of the electrons when they emit synchrotron radiation in an E and B field. The technology will be integrated into a full-demonstrator relic neutrino detector within 2-3 years from now.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher Decolonial Futures
We are looking for a postdoc who will contribute to the RPA’s research line on “Justice: Past, Present and Future” by approaching cultural heritage from a critical humanities perspective. We would like the research of the postdoc to address and redress colonial legacies by examining how we can harness material and immaterial archives silenced, marginalized and fragmented by colonial violence (which tend not to be recognized as cultural heritage) to create new visions of a just global future and how we can mobilize these visions to work towards meaningful social change, for example through reparation and restitution. The focus may also lie on how these archives enable forms of research and teaching that challenge the monocultural modes of knowledge production from which the concept of heritage itself emerged. We are particularly interested in projects that explore the decolonial force of harnessing archives as-yet excluded from globally dominant notions of cultural heritage across at least two of the RPA’s four thematic fields: (1) Museums, monuments & archives; (2) Ecology, sustainability & climate change; (3) Migrations, mobility & borders; and (4) Race, gender, sexuality, class & diversity.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher Health Humanities
This postdoc position will focus on the intersection of cultural heritage, identity, health and wellbeing. Health and wellbeing are shaped by a complex interplay of social, cultural, and biological factors: as Covid has shown, even a virus will have a different impact across a population depending on economic and environmental factors, and on the alignment or clash between public health advice with cultural values, historical legacies, and personal circumstances. Moreover, the identity categories of ill, abnormal, infertile, old, or disabled are historically and culturally specific and can carry great stigma, fueling inequality and undermining wellbeing as well as social inclusion and participation. Cultural heritage and identity are part of the intersecting influences that can foster or undermine public health, promoting, deterring, or preventing healthy behaviour. Interdisciplinary research is needed to determine how history, heritage, and culture shape values and behaviours, which in turn can help explore how these factors might be mobilized to support healthier societies and to support people to cope with major threats to health such as climate change.
