Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Assistant/Associate (Fixed Term)
You will be part of a friendly, collaborative team focused on understanding how early life experiences during so-called ‘critical periods’ of development have lasting impacts on nervous system function; for example, by determining nerve cell growth and excitability. This project uses the fruit fly, Drosophila, as a model system. We have discovered that different temperatures experienced during development (e.g. hot vs cold) change how the nervous system develops and functions. For example, when a fly embryo experiences heat stress for just two hours, its nervous system develops sub-optimally, and the resultant larva behaves abnormally and is susceptible to seizures. We have discovered the underlying mechanisms, including metabolic signals and transduction pathways. The project is now at the exciting stage of bringing several discoveries together, for publication.
Your role includes fly husbandry and genetics, dissections, immuno-staining and imaging of larvae; followed by image data analysis. You will be working closely with other members of the team, with opportunity for a high degree of independence. While skills in some of the techniques are advantageous, expertise and training for all aspects are available within the team.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate (Fixed Term)
The post-holder will exploit the opportunity offered by the ONS CIS data collection to better understand community infection and transmission. Starting with SARS-CoV-2, the main task is to develop new methods to estimate incidence and transmission, harnessing the rich epidemiological and genomic data available. This will allow quantification of changes in transmission across pandemic waves while disentangling the contribution of different viral lineages. An important constraint in this project is the need for individual-level data to remain within a computationally limited secure research environment, so use of computationally efficient approaches will be key. Outputs will include new estimation tools and inform the design of future population surveys, contributing to pandemic preparedness agenda.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in a strongly quantitative discipline, but applications from candidates close to submitting their PhD are also welcome. Research experience in Bayesian statistics is essential as is experience in statistical programming, an ability to produce high-quality academic writing, good communication skills and an enthusiasm for collaborating with non-statistical scientists. Experience in infectious disease transmission modelling is highly advantageous. MRC-BSU is one of Europe’s leading biostatistics research institutions. Our focus is to develop and apply new analytical and computational strategies for the challenging tasks facing biomedicine and public health. The Unit is situated on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, one of the world’s most vibrant centres of biomedical research, which includes the University of Cambridge’s Clinical School, two major hospitals, the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, and the world headquarters of Astra Zeneca.

Special attention will be devoted to understanding the role of phase transformations in new cathode materials during cycling. The project will contribute to advanced models capturing the intricate coupling between ion and electron transfer processes.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop electrochemical testing methods based on impedance spectroscopy along with advanced data analysis and modelling to build an accurate description of the intercalation processes. The successful candidate will have a good knowledge of electrochemical methods (potentiometry, amperometry, CV, EIS, GITT) and a good understanding of the theory of electrochemical processes to be able develop the data analysis and interpretation. Further experience with materials characterization techniques, such as NMR, XRD and SEM, and battery research are also beneficial.

About The University of Cambridge, United Kingdom – Official Website
The University of Cambridge is a collegiate research university in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Founded in 1209 and granted a royal charter by Henry III in 1231, Cambridge is the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world’s fourth-oldest surviving university. The university grew out of an association of scholars who left the University of Oxford after a dispute with the townspeople. The two English ancient universities share many common features and are often jointly referred to as Oxbridge.
Cambridge is formed from a variety of institutions which include 31 semi-autonomous constituent colleges and over 150 academic departments, faculties and other institutions organised into six schools. All the colleges are self-governing institutions within the university, each controlling its own membership and with its own internal structure and activities. All students are members of a college. Cambridge does not have a main campus, and its colleges and central facilities are scattered throughout the city. Undergraduate teaching at Cambridge is organised around weekly small-group supervisions in the colleges – a feature unique to the Oxbridge system. These are complemented by classes, lectures, seminars, laboratory work and occasionally further supervisions provided by the central university faculties and departments. Postgraduate teaching is provided predominantly centrally.
Cambridge University Press, a department of the university, is the oldest university press in the world and currently the second largest university press in the world. Cambridge Assessment, also a department of the university, is one of the world’s leading examining bodies and provides assessment to over eight million learners globally every year. The university also operates eight cultural and scientific museums, including the Fitzwilliam Museum, as well as a botanic garden. Cambridge’s libraries, of which there are 116, hold a total of around 16 million books, around nine million of which are in Cambridge University Library, a legal deposit library. The university is home to, but independent of, the Cambridge Union – the world’s oldest debating society. The university is closely linked to the development of the high-tech business cluster known as ‘Silicon Fen’. It is the central member of Cambridge University Health Partners, an academic health science centre based around the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
