Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in biochemistry

We will take a host-virus systems biology approach to elucidate the prevalence of Short Linear Motif (SLiM)-based host-virus protein-protein interactions. Viral proteins mimic human SLiMs to take over the host cell machinery and these interactions have crucial roles in viral infections. We have a unique platform for large-scale screening of SLiM-based interactions. We will screen for interactions among a collection of human bait proteins, which will provide large-scale information on SLiM-based viral hijacking. We will identify host proteins and processes serving as common hubs of viral interference, and validate key interactions through biophysical and virological assays. The project is a collaboration with Per Jemth’s lab at Uppsala University and Anna Överby’s lab at Umeå University.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in biomedical engineering with at focus on droplet-based microfluidics

The rapid development of antibiotic resistance is one of the world’s greatest threats to public health. We therefore need to develop innovative diagnostic methods that can quickly and with high accuracy identify and classify the sensitivity of different bacteria to antibiotics. The purpose is to assist in clinical decision-making with the prescription of correct antibiotic treatment.

A major challenge in determining whether bacterial cells are susceptible or resistant to a specific antibiotic is that there are sometimes very small subpopulations of bacteria that exhibit an unstable and transient change in their resistance, a phenomenon known as heteroresistance. The goal of this project is to develop new methods for rapid detection and isolation of heteroresistant subpopulations of bacteria for future clinical applications. In the project, we will develop new microfluidic systems with integrated acoustics for the identification and isolation of bacteria.

(20) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in Biomedical Engineering with a focus on Artificial Intelligence for Additive Manufacturing

Additive manufacturing, or 3D-printing, is a disruptive technology enabling the manufacturing of complex structures as well as new material combinations and tailored material microstructures. However, process parameter development to enable printing of new materials with the desired properties may be extremely costly, time- and material consuming. To speed up the development, as well as to achieve a better understanding of the relationship between process parameters and the resulting material microstructure and hence its macroscopic properties, this project will focus on the use of advanced statistical models and machine learning for the additive manufacturing process. The methods will be applied to experimental data derived from powder bed fusion with laser beam (PBF-LB) of biodegradable alloys (Mg- and Zn-based), as these are particularly challenging to process and the microstructures achieved can be very complex. These alloys are promising biomaterials for bone-healing implants due to their ability to be replaced by bone tissue while degrading within the human body. However, for degradable alloys, there is limited knowledge of how to manufacture these materials using additive manufacturing.

(21) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Researcher position for development of fractionation processes of wood and production of new advanced lignin-based materials

This project is about the development of new advanced materials from different types of biomass (mainly from soft and hard wood). The project is based on a fractionation method, a so-called lignin first organosolv process, for isolating lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose. Through this method, as much as possible of the lignin’s natural properties is preserved, which provides opportunities to develop new advanced materials and an increased chance to replace fossil-based components in existing materials. The lignin polymer may need to be modified in further steps to adapt to the application. We see a very broad area of use where lignin-based materials can contribute to the environmental transition and add value in several industries such as the mining industry, the battery industry, the construction industry, the pharmaceutical industry and more. To take advantage of the entire process, the hemicellulose and cellulose fractions must also be taken into account.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in accelerator physics

We are currently looking for a postdoc to work with a European project in accelerator development for a large-scale neutrino physics project, the ESS neutrino Super-Beam (ESSnuSB). It is based on the use of the particle accelerator facility for the European Spallation Source (ESS), currently being built in Lund, Sweden. The main objective of the ESSnuSB project is to measure charge-parity violation in leptons by studying the asymmetry in neutrino oscillations between matter and anti-matter. To achieve this, we need to expand the accelerator complex at ESS by adding an accumulator ring, where the pulses from the ESS linac are compressed. The compressed pulses will be sent to a target where the neutrino super-beam is formed. The neutrino oscillation parameters will be studied in a large detector, located about 360 km from the source. In addition, we are working on yet another addition: a nuSTORM facility (neutrinos from stored muons), which includes a muon storage ring that would be used for generating a neutrino beam for neutrino cross section measurements. The successful candidate will be involved in the work with designing and evaluating the muon storage ring as well as with other aspects of the ESSnuSB accelerator complex.

(31) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Researcher in Astrophysics with focus on evolved stars

Evolved stars play a crucial role for the cosmic matter cycle and the origin of life. Critical chemical elements, like carbon, are produced inside luminous cool giant stars, transported to the surface by turbulent gas flows, and ejected into interstellar space by massive outflows of gas and dust. The current knowledge of stellar winds is incomplete, and does not allow us to fully understand their effects on the evolution of stars, and how they enrich their surroundings with newly produced elements and cosmic dust. Project EXWINGS (https://www.astro.uu.se/exwings), funded by the European Research Council with an ERC Advanced Grant, aims at a breakthrough in understanding the winds of cool giant and supergiant stars. Recently, we have developed a new type of models: global dynamical star-and-wind-in-a-box simulations, in full 3D geometry. Astronomical instruments with high spatial resolution, which give images and spectra of the stellar atmospheres where the winds originate, allow us to test the new models.

About Uppsala University, Sweden –Official Website

Uppsala University  is a research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the oldest university in Sweden and all of the Nordic countries still in operation. It has ranked among the world’s 100 best universities in several high-profile international rankings during recent years. The university uses “Gratiae veritas naturae” as its motto and embraces natural sciences.

The university rose to pronounced significance during the rise of Sweden as a great power at the end of the 16th century and was then given a relative financial stability with the large donation of King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century. Uppsala also has an important historical place in Swedish national culture, identity and for the Swedish establishment: in historiography, literature, politics, and music. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture in general, such as the white student cap, originated in Uppsala. It shares some peculiarities, such as the student nation system, with Lund University and the University of Helsinki.

Uppsala belongs to the Coimbra Group of European universities and to the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three “disciplinary domains”. It has about 44,000 registered students and 2,300 doctoral students. It has a teaching staff of roughly 1,800 (part-time and full-time) out of a total of 6,900 employees. Twenty-eight per cent of the 716 professors at the university are women. Of its turnover of SEK 6.6 billion (approx. USD 775 million) in 2016, 29% was spent on education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, while 70% was spent on research and research programs.

Architecturally, Uppsala University has traditionally had a strong presence in Fjärdingen, the neighbourhood around the cathedral on the western side of the River Fyris. Despite some more contemporary building developments further away from the centre, Uppsala’s historic centre continues to be dominated by the presence of the university.
