PhD position summary/title: PhD Student

Predictive Breeding is an ambitious research group that is focused on the development and application of data-driven plant breeding methods. This is a rapidly evolving domain of science that aims to integrate high-througpout phenotyping and genotyping technology to maximise the rate of genetic progress for traits of agronomic importance. In this respect, scientific advancement in the field of data-driven breeding is considered to be a pivotal catalyst for the short-term realisation of the European Green Deal ambitions and the transition towards a sustainable agrifood system. Your PhD research is centred around the concept of genomic selection which involves the prediction of the agronomic performance of plants directly from their DNA code. This selection technique allows to routinely screen the potential of thousands of plants before they even emerge from their seed. However, cost-effective application of genomic selection remains challenging and low-cost genotyping and phenotyping strategies are key to the cost-effective maximisation of genetic gain. Your role is to devise, evaluate and implement strategies for sparse genotyping and phenotyping. Your research activities will introduce you to various statistical and machine learning techniques, making this position an excellent opportunity to demonstrate and further improve your data analysis skills.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student

Soil biology is the new frontier in environmental sciences, and received overwhelming and ever increasing attention in recent years, but despite the rapidly evolving knowledge on soil biodiversity as such, its relation with crucial soil functions remains largely unexplored. The carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycles in soil are tightly coupled and determine crucial processes with respect to agricultural production (e.g. N availability) and to environmental problems (N leaching losses, emissions of the greenhouse gases CO2, N2O and CH4, C sequestration, …). It has been frequently suggested that soil microfauna (nematodes, protists) play a very important part in C and N cycling, but research in this field has largely ignored the role of microfauna and their interactions with plant roots, bacteria and fungi, mostly as a result of the phenomenal methodological challenges in this type of research. In the past decade, we have achieved breakthroughs in this field and we were e.g. the first to quantify the contribution of the entire soil nematode community in realistic soil conditions. In this project, we will set up unique multitrophic experiments controlling for the presence of specific trophic groups of nematodes and their combinations, to assess how herbivorous nematodes control rhizodeposition, how this root derived carbon cascades to the microbial community and to the bacterivorous and fungivorous nematodes, and the feedback mechanisms on plant (roots). To this end, we will use 13C stable isotope labelling to track the rhizodeposition as a function of time, and its redistribution over the soil decomposer community. We will monitor the evolution of root trait development using both destructive and non-destructive methods (X-ray computed tomography), and assess how the activity of microfauna controls this development, both directly and indirectly. We will also investigate how nematode trophic groups and their combination influence N2O emissions from soil, potentially leading to improved management to reduce N2O emissions. Finally, this project will produce unique data that should allow to critically evaluate existing soil food web models, and propose new concepts for such models, and that may allow to increase our prediction of N dynamics in biogeochemical simulation models.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student

We are looking for a PhD student for a research project on textile modelling and characterization. In this project, the main purpose is to develop a multi-scale textile modelling framework that allows accurate simulation of textile manufacturing processes such as yarn unwinding from a bobbin, weft insertion during weaving, stitching and tufting. Besides a strong numerical research focus, there is also an experimental research track focusing on advanced mechanical testing of textile materials and their connections, both on lab-scale and industrial scale (e.g. in-situ measurements on textile machines). Using techniques such as Digital Image Correlation and high speed camera’s we gain much better insights into the rate-dependent behaviour of different textile materials, ranging from yarn to fabric. These measurements will also serve as input to and validation of the numerical models. This PhD requires an experimentalist to do the mechanical characterization of textile materials and their connections at different scales. The PhD researcher will be part of a team of 4 researchers (3 PhD students and one postdoctoral researcher) who will all work on this large research project. You will work at the Department of Materials, Textiles and Chemical Engineering at Ghent University under prof. Lode DAELEMANS (Centre for Textile Science and Engineering, https://textiles.ugent.be) and prof. Wim VAN PAEPEGEM (Mechanics of Materials and Structures, https://composites.ugent.be). Ghent University is a large university in Belgium, counting about 45,000 students and consistently ranks among the best 100 universities in the world. The research group and its laboratories are situated in the Tech Lane Science Park in the south of Ghent (Technologiepark 70, 9052 Zwijnaarde). The campus is easily accessed by bike, bus or car.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student

Urban areas in low-lying coastal zones are typically protected from flooding due to storm surge and waves by a hybrid soft-hard coastal defence structure. Such structures combine a mild-sloped beach (soft structure) and a steep-sloped dike (hard structure). For smaller water depths on the beach (shallow water case), a surf and swash zone starts to develop in front of the dike toe. In this zone, short waves (ss) reduce in wave height by wave breaking, while longer waves or “infragravity (ig) waves” increase in wave height due to shoaling and energy transfer from the ss waves. The ig wave-related processes have a highly significant, but insufficiently investigated effect on the wave overtopping. The research aims at gaining more (quantitative) insight into the influence of ig waves on these processes and in how they can be taken into account in the design of a hybrid beach-dike coastal defence system. The research project is funded by the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO), and the research consortium is composed of research groups at Ghent University, KU Leuven and Flanders Marine Institute. This vacancy pertains to research tasks carried out at the project coordinator Ghent University.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student

This research proposal addresses the broader topic of how legal proceedings, specifically arbitration proceedings, have evolved and will continue to evolve with the advent of new technologies. The digital revolution has introduced several technological innovations in international arbitration. However, the focus of current use of technology in arbitration practice seems to be limited to migrating offline communications to online platforms and exploring data-based tools.
Despite these initial steps toward digitalization, there is a consensus that much untapped potential remains. The primary challenge lies in striking the right balance between efficiency and safeguarding the parties’ fundamental procedural rights. This proposed research aims to pave the way for further implementation of technology by examining the diverse ways in which technology could enhance arbitration. It also seeks to determine to what extent this can be reconciled with prevailing procedural and technology law norms. By doing so, we aim to challenge the current cautious policies of major arbitration stakeholders and significantly reduce costs and processing time in the thousands of arbitration procedures initiated each year. The research will rely on empirical research as well as traditional legal methodology, with the need for technological exploration and input.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student

Our research group currently is involved in research projects in the energy domain, including mostly smart grid applications. The focus of our AI4E team in these projects is on data analytics, as well as coordination algorithms for, e.g., demand response. A major objective of the applications we want to support is to accommodate large penetration of renewable sources (wind mills, solar panels, etc.) without requiring excessive investments in the power grid infrastructure. This involves characterizing and eventually predicting both power generation (from renewables) and consumption behavior (and its flexibility, e.g., what portion thereof can be shifted in time), using data analytics techniques, constructing generative models, applying machine learning, etc. The next step is to actively control power consumption, e.g., by developing algorithms for energy management systems (to steer power consumption and/or decide what to use local production for, e.g., push into the grid or local storage). Your role in these projects will be to devise and evaluate cutting edge algorithms, implement them, evaluate them in case studies and report on the results in a well-structured manner. Additionally, depending on the project, this may also involve the design/implementation of software prototypes for simulation and proof-of-concept demonstrations (in lab settings, but also in live field trials). You will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with researchers and engineers from other universities, research institutes and/or companies. As you will be dealing with several aspects of designing and evaluating systems (mathematical models, machine learning, optimization techniques, software development, simulation, etc.), the function is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate and further improve several of your mathematical and engineering skills.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student

The water sector is under increasing pressure worldwide. To ensure water security and sustainable development, major paradigm shifts are in progress. A first important shift is the transition towards a circular water and resource economy. This transition is inherently a multidisciplinary and multi-objective effort that implies bridging historical silo’s (for example drinking water, wastewater, hydrology for rainwater harvesting, agriculture, industry). The second paradigm shift is the digital transformation and the emergence of powerful and automated model simulations that support real-time smart decision making. However, to achieve powerful digital tools that can support holistic decision making towards more circular and sustainable water management, many different data sources, models and submodels need to communicate with each other in a more efficient and automated way. For example, the development of a digital twin for water management in a city requires heterogeneous sources of data (e.g., water quality, energy, cost, meteorology, etc.) and various models/sub-models (e.g., models for sewer networks, hydrology, river hydraulics, water/wastewater treatment technologies, economic models, etc.) of the system to be connected to each other and communicate in an efficient and automated manner.

Techno-economic evaluation of 5G and drone-based services With lives at stake, speed and visibility are critical for emergency services to reply properly to the incoming distress calls. The emergency services still too often do not have specific information to estimate calamities. Images that show the magnitude of disasters and the number of people involved are therefore invaluable in saving lives. With Drone-as-a-Service solution, rescuers have real-time insight into emergencies using HD and thermal video images. In addition to providing real-time insights for emergency services, the use of drones can also help to reduce response times and improve the overall efficiency of emergency operations. For example, drones can quickly assess the extent of damage to buildings and infrastructure, identify hazards or obstructions that may impede rescue efforts, and locate individuals in need of assistance.

We are looking for a PhD student for a research project on textile modelling. In this project, the main purpose is to develop a multi-scale textile modelling framework that allows accurate simulation of textile manufacturing processes such as yarn unwinding from a bobbin, weft insertion during weaving, stitching and tufting. This framework is implemented using finite element modelling as well as virtual fibre modelling. Big challenges here are the high anisotropy, low bending stiffness and non-linear behaviour of most textile materials, as well as the dynamics of manufacturing systems as most production happens at very high speeds. Moreover, the approach should entail both kinematics as well as mechanics such that predictive simulations of textile manufacturing can be made. This is still a very new research topic and many scientific questions remain unanswered. How to increase Brain Power – Secrets of Brain Unlocked

(20) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student

We are offering a PhD scholarship to unravel the molecular-genetic mechanisms that shape herbivory and reproduction in insects and mites. Arthropods are associated with a diverse set of bacteria. Certain intracellular bacteria infect the reproductive tissues of their arthropod host and spread rapidly through host populations by manipulating reproduction. Symbiont-mediated reproductive phenotypes will be a major focus of this PhD scholarship. Bacteria can further influence the evolution and ecology of arthropods by facilitating novel feeding ecologies, such as herbivory. Bacteria promote arthropod herbivory by horizontal gene transfer, or by initiating a long-term symbiotic relationship. This project will contribute to resolving the enigmatic genetic, molecular, and biochemical mechanisms that shape these host-symbiont interactions, with an emphasis on haplodiploid arthropods. The successful applicant will be hosted at the Terrestrial Ecology research group, Department of Biology, Ghent University, Belgium. He/she/they will work within a dynamic and complementary research team that focuses on understanding the evolution and mechanistic basis of reproductive symbiosis and herbivory. The scholar is expected to start between January and March 2024.

Within the framework of a newly funded ERC Consolidator Grant (PASTIME project), we are seeking several motivated PhD students in biophysical modeling. The students will perform theoretical and computational research using simulations at the molecular scale. In the PASTIME project, we will search for methodologies to study the kinetics of drug transport. Since experiments often are too expensive or lack sufficient detail, molecular simulations can give insight in the dynamics of drug binding to proteins, or the permeation kinetics of those drug molecules through membranes. While such computational methodologies exist, new fundamental developments are needed to understand the ‘time’ aspects and to make the computations feasible with present-day computer power.

PhD position summary/title:  PhD Student

We imagine a future world of connected autonomously driving vehicles, AR/VR devices, smart clothing, cooperative robots in industry, or drones delivering packages at your doorstep. These applications are expected to be possible from novel techniques in wireless networking resulting into an increased spectrum, but also from the deep integration of the network with all types of computing power in the cloud and at the edge of the network. While all of this is possible in theory, many network control problems need to be solved under the hoods to make this possible: the topology consisting of all these different network segments must be discovered, routes must be found, and guarantees must be provided such that network communication can happen within (or less than) milliseconds. While already challenging on its own, this all must happen in a continuously changing environment, where people and devices move all the time. This gives rise to a wide number of optimization-related challenges in a highly distributed context. How to detect and utilize the best routes, highest capacity with lowest (and guaranteed) latencies between all those devices, and how to perform reservations within tight time boundaries. The research group is involved in several national and European research projects focusing on future networks and their ability to provide novel services on demand at high performance with strong guarantees.
To face the different research challenges in this domain, we are looking for a researcher who is able to combine modelling, algorithmic and software skills needed to advance this field.

PhD position summary/title:  PhD Student

We welcome applications for a PhD position on the topic “Assessing the impact of human mobility on Dengue spread in an urban system of Cuba by means of mathematical modeling”. The PhD scholarship follows from a collaboration between the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp (Veerle Vanlerberghe), the Pedro Kouri Institute of Tropical Medicine at the University of Havana (Maria Eugenia Toledo) and Ghent University (Jan Baetens and Tijs Alleman, research unit BIOSPACE – https://biospace.ugent.be – at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, Ghent University).
Mathematical models predicted an increase of Dengue cases under the social restrictions imposed to counter COVID-19. Opposed, such increase was not observed and Dengue cases were historically low. This implies the current knowledge on the influence of mobility patterns on dengue transmissions is incomplete and more research is warranted. To this end, qualitative data on public space use and quantitative data on vector prevalence and mobility patterns in Cienfuegos, Cuba will be funneled into a mathematical model co-developed at Ghent University and ITM Antwerp. In addition to broadening our knowledge on Dengue epidemiology, the project aims to build knowledge locally by providing concrete recommendations to policymakers and by building a real-time forecasting system for the Pedro Kouri Institute of Tropical Medicine in Havana. In addition, the project will be relevant in Western Europe under current climate change predictions, as Dengue may become endemic in this region.

PhD position summary/title:  PhD Student

The Ghent Institute for Legal History is looking for 5 PhD Candidates who will be working within the project ‘Rethinking emergency from a legal historical perspective: contexts, actors, practices 1914-2020’ (EMERGE), which is funded by the European Research Council (ERC, ERC Consolidator Grant 2022, no 101087876). Set within the Faculty of Law and Criminology, a faculty home to many academics of diverse backgrounds, the Institute is a dynamic venue fostering rigorous ground-breaking research in legal history with a focus on legal theory and contextual analysis. You will develop and grow in research, both individually and as part of a team of ambitious scholars. As PhD Candidate in legal history, you will analyse the historical use of emergency powers and emergency legislation during the 20th century and early 21st century in Europe. The project EMERGE hypothesizes that the enactment of emergency legislation determines substantial and lasting changes to fundamental rights, the principle of the rule of law as well as the commitment to liberal values of equality before the law and universalism of rights. This hypothesis will be tested against five key moments in the constitutional and legal history of five European jurisdictions during the last century (c.1914-c.2020). The PhD Candidates will analyse the historical context, the law and the practice of emergency in five countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Romania, and the United Kingdom). The first PhD position is concerned with Belgium, the second PhD position with France, the third one with Germany (including the GDR), the fourth one with Romania and the fifth one with the United Kingdom (with a focus of Northern Ireland).

About Ghent University, Belgium  –Official Website

Ghent University is a public research university located in Ghent, Belgium. It was established in 1817 by King William I of the Netherlands. After the Belgian revolution of 1830, the newly formed Belgian state began to administer the university. In 1930, the university became the first Dutch-speaking university in Belgium, whereas French had previously been the standard academic language in what was Université de Gand. In 1991, it was granted major autonomy and changed its name accordingly from State University of Ghent (Dutch: Rijksuniversiteit Gent, abbreviated as RUG) to its current designation.

In contrast to the Catholic University of Leuven or the Free University of Brussels, UGent considers itself a pluralist university in a special sense, i.e. not connected to any particular religion or political ideology. Its motto Inter Utrumque (‘In Between Both Extremes’), on the coat of arms, suggests the acquisition of wisdom and science comes only in an atmosphere of peace, when the institution is fully supported by the monarchy and fatherland.

Ghent University is one of the biggest Flemish universities, consisting of 44,000 students and 9,000 staff members. The University also supports the University Library and the University Hospital, which is one of the largest hospitals in Belgium. It is one of the greatest beneficiaries of funding from the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO). Ghent University consistently rates among the top 100 universities in the world.
