(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in mechanisms of electroactive microorganisms

Some microorganisms, called electrotrophs, have the extraordinary capacity to feed on electrons derived from steel and electrodes. Such microorganisms are of interest for bioelectrochemical applications (e.g. to convert electric energy into useful compounds, such as in microbial electrosynthesis), while electrotrophs also cause detrimental microbial corrosion. Electrotrophs belong to many different microbial groups. However, not all members of these groups are electrotrophic, and it remains unclear what determines whether a microbe is an electrotroph or not.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Position: Data-Driven Modelling in Catalysis

In this project, the successful candidate will contribute to the development and application of machine learning (ML) methods for accelerating the computational screening of catalytic materials. We will specifically target metal oxides, which are a challenging class of materials due to the many possible metal oxides that could, in principle, be formed from the elements of the periodic table as well as their complex electronic structure and possible surface geometry. Metal oxides show good catalytic performances for a wide range of reactions but remain largely unexplored with current ML approaches. We will focus our investigations on CO2 reduction to valuable chemicals and fuels (CO and methanol), which can help our society in the mitigation of global warming and diversification of energy sources. Together with international collaborators, we will explore ML methods based on mathematical graph theory for the prediction of binding configurations and energies of molecules at oxides, including methods based on graph kernels and graph neural networks, which have shown great performance for the modeling of chemical systems in recent years. The ML models will enable accurate and low-cost predictions to be made for a large number of systems and will be used to establish kinetic models for the catalytic activity of metal oxides within electrochemical and thermal conversion of CO2. Further refinement of the kinetic models will be carried out for the most promising catalytic materials found to arrive at a sufficient predictive accuracy for guiding experimental investigations, i.e., the synthesis, characterization and laboratory testing of these materials.

(09) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in the ReBIAS research project

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are substances that affect hormones in the body and are linked to health issues such as infertility, obesity, and cancer. Despite policy efforts, EDCs are still present in many consumer products. However, our exposure to EDCs also depends on our personal behaviors, such as the food we eat or the personal-care products we use. Unfortunately, due to cognitive biases (systematic errors in thinking), many people underestimate EDC risks compared to experts and do nothing to prevent them. To increase public response, we will use rebiasing (fighting cognitive biases with other cognitive biases). This project will pioneer interdisciplinary research on cognitive biases associated with EDCs and how we can use them to change EDC risk behavior. It will yield a conceptual framework for understanding EDC risk behavior through cognitive biases, a method to improve EDC risk perceptions, and a behavioral intervention expected to change people’s EDC risk behavior.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in Neural Tissue Engineering

De-myelination is the loss of the myelin sheath insulating the nerves, which disrupts the ability the nervous system to transmit signals, resulting in multiple sclerosis with over 2.5 million people affected world-wide and representing a serious health, economic and social burden with no long-term suitable treatment. The ongoing research on myelin repair is heavily dependent on re-myelination by glial cell transplantation, which often fails with disease progression leading to irreversible functional failure. The project aims to apply innovative electrospinning technology to recapitulate the myelinated nerve fibers to elucidate pathological mechanisms of multiple sclerosis on a single-nerve fiber scale as well as pursuing the novel diagnosis and therapy discovery.

(12) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in environmental DNA (eDNA) and bioassessment

Biodiversity is declining globally, and accurate, efficient methods for assessing ecosystem quality are therefore essential. However, current methods are often destructive and resource-heavy, relying on taxonomic experts to identify individual organisms. The use of eDNA – DNA from environmental samples like water or soil – allows for more efficient, less invasive biomonitoring and -assessment. But while eDNA methods are less dependent on taxonomic experts than classic methods, many DNA sequences cannot be identified to species, as much of biodiversity is undescribed or unsequenced. We are now seeking a highly motivated postdoc for a project on the inclusion of such “dark taxa” in bioassessment, through the use of supervised machine learning. This will contribute to a next-generation biomonitoring approach that is more standardized, representative, and resource-efficient. The project will take advantage of existing eDNA data to: i) investigate the relative strength of different genetic markers/target taxa for performing taxonomy-free bioassessment; ii) identify potential “indicator sequences” among the “dark taxa”, which can be widely used for bioassessment.

(13) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Two-year postdoc on Macroecological isotopic perspectives on past novel ecosystem dynamics

This postdoc project will be part of the ECONOVO research theme 1: Diversity Dynamics, focused on understanding biodiversity dynamics in novel ecosystems (NEs) past and present. This position is focused on isotopic niche dynamics of selected terrestrial megafauna during the Late Glacial and Early Holocene in Europe and/or Africa. The aim of this project will be first to collate relevant stable isotopic data from the literature and available databases, and then model megafaunal isotopic niche spaces comparatively and in relation to background environmental variables and key markers of ecosystem novelty, as inferred from published proxy records and/or models. The postdoc is expected to lead a systematic compilation of published stable isotope values for relevant terrestrial megafauna and to use existing modelling tools (e.g., rKIN, SIBER, nicheROVER) to assess dietary niche breadth and stability across time and space. Further, dietary niches should then be assessed in relation to the pace and nature of ecosystem novelty during these periods. Finally, the postdoc is expected to contribute ideas and concepts to the project and lead at least two high-quality papers in this research area. It is also expected that the postdoc contributes to the project’s public outreach and teaching, as well as collaborating with other team members, including students, sharing skills, and helping solve problems in her/his area of expertise.

(18) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in media and cultural studies and/or postcolonial studies

Art and cultural practices continue to play a significant role in decolonial endeavours that fight colonial structures, racist practices and legacies that continue to haunt contemporary societies because art and culture open the way to sense new futures and bring them to live in the here and now. Playing with ghosts looks into whether decolonial art and cultural practices could work against polarisation in creating playful encounters and possibilities of co-habitation between different and diverse minority and majority groups in affectively ambivalent spaces on the basis of the assumption that colonialism is inherited through structural asymmetries. The project will 1) generate knowledge about playful practices, modes and moods in contemporary art, culture and activism from former and contemporary colonised spaces, in particular the U.S. Virgin Islands and Kalaallit Nunaat; 2) develop a digital artistic intervention with local artists and citizens; and 3) test this interactive artistic work on particular groups in order to conduct reception studies and detect the concrete transformative and empowering impact that engaging in critical-playful artistic practices may have on different groups. Playing with ghosts will be a significant contribution to postcolonial and decolonial studies in studying the modes, moods and impact of playful cultural forms and spelling out the capacities of practice-based artistic interventions in a-symmetrical and conflictual social environments for paving ways toward living together differently.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in statistical epigenetics and genetics

In 2012, The Danish High Risk and Resilience Study was established, a representative nation-wide cohort of 522 7-year-old children born to parents with severe MDx and matched controls (VIA 7). No previous study has performed such a multimodal, deep phenotyping of MDx-traits as done in the VIA 7, and its second wave – VIA 11 (children follow-up at age 11). Research in VIA to date reported that children from MDx parents more often lived in inadequate home environments, had lower quality of life, and had unfavorable outcomes across three neurodevelopmental domains (NDs): i) psychopathology (increased number of MDx), ii) motor skills (lower level and performance in physical acitivities), and iii) general intelligence (lower IQ levels). In addition to comprehensive phenotyping of NDs and genotyping data available, we have longitudinally quantified DNAm levels at > 850,000 loci across the genome, at age 7 and 11. This data collection is internationally unique: it represents the largest and most thoroughly characterized familial high-risk cohort, which now, with integration of genetic and epigenetic data, will enable further advancement of the understanding of molecular mechanisms in development of mental illness.
