We are pleased to announce a new Postdoctoral Associate position starting Winter/Spring 2025 working with directly with Dr. Marc Stern and Dr. Kelley Anderson Virginia Tech (and in collaboration with Dr. Bob Powell at Clemson University). With funding from the National Park Service (NPS) and National Science Foundation, the postdoctoral associate will help to coordinate evidence-based learning networks of NPS units and other educational organizations to (1) develop evaluation capacity; (2) conduct evaluation research on their programs; (3) conduct quasi-experimental research to identify lessons about what works in environmental education and interpretation; and (4) conduct research on the development and outcomes of networked learning communities. Other opportunities exist for additional research in the conservation social sciences as well as teaching opportunities.

A postdoctoral position is available in the lab of Dr. Bryan Hsu in the Department of Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech (Blacksburg, VA). Research will broadly cover the gut microbiome with focuses on host-microbe interactions, bacteriophages (phages), synthetic biology, and gut-specific biomaterials engineering. Candidates will have the opportunity to develop their own research projects and interests. The Hsu lab utilizes molecular, biomaterials, biological, sequencing, and omics towards the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. This postdoctoral position in thermal-fluids sciences is associated with multi-physics modeling in reacting flows involving both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and pore-network models. This modeling will be used in simulations of wildland fire applications with a specific focus on predicting the burning of firebrand piles and subsequent ignition of structures. In this position, new models will be created to expand the physics in the open-source pore network model Open-PNM to predict reacting flows and their associated physics. This will include development of new subroutines and models based on physics and machine learning algorithms.

A postdoctoral opening is immediately available in the Soft Materials and Structures Lab under the direction of Dr. Michael Bartlett at Virginia Tech (https://bartlett.me.vt.edu/). The opening is in the area of soft electronics and integration. The project will focus on the fabrication, evaluation, and implementation of novel soft devices using liquid metal-based composites.

Postdoctoral research fellow to study Precambrian Earth-life system. The postdoctoral research fellow will lead independent research projects on the evolution of Precambrian Earth-life system, including but not limited to field investigation, light and electron microscopy, stable isotope and trace element geochemical analysis, quantitative analysis, numerical modeling, data interpretation, and manuscript preparation. The successful candidate will also participate in mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, managing a paleontology lab, and other appropriate duties relevant to career advancement.

Postdoctoral Associate needed. The NMFC lab focuses on various work related to energy sectors, particularly nuclear reactor applications. The Lam lab (Biological Sciences) at Virginia Tech is seeking to hire a research associate to work on host-microbe interactions, antibiotic resistance, and antimicrobial development. Successful applicant will be expected to investigate the mechanism of antibiotic resistance, elucidate novel bacterial virulence mechanisms, study the host response to bacterial infection and to assess the efficacy of inhibitors of bacterial virulence factors in vitro and in mice models.

The Assured Vehicle Autonomy (AVA) Lab at the Kevin T. Crofton Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering at Virginia Tech is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to design, implement, and test new modeling, estimation, and detection methods for automated navigation systems using Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), inertial sensors, LiDARs, vision, and radars. The group focuses on error bounding and interference mitigation for high-integrity, resilient positioning navigation and timing (PNT) in safety-critical multi-modal transportation applications. The Center for Neutrino Physics at Virginia Tech invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position. The Virginia Tech group lead by Prof. Mariani and Prof. Pitts is involved in the protoDUNE experiment at CERN, DUNE and SBND at Fermilab and on the e-Ar electron scattering experiment at Jefferson Lab. The group is involved in protoDUNE and SBND calibration and data analysis. In DUNE the group is involved in the slow control for the far detectors. The successful candidate will work on both the slow monitor development and on data analysis. The group is performing several measurements related to neutrino and electron scattering on argon. Work will involve collaborating with leading experimentalists and theorists in the field in developing and validating nuclear models for neutrino interaction Monte Carlo generators. Duties may also include supervising and coordinating the work of other researchers and personnel, especially graduate and undergraduate students, and develop new analysis effort in the DUNE experiment. The successful candidate should be able to travel internationally and is expected to work for extended period of time at Fermilab and CERN. Primary location is negotiable.

We are searching for a postdoctoral researcher in the Hydrologic Innovation and Remote Sensing Lab of the Geoscience Department, Virginia Tech. The NASA-funded research includes a prediction of groundwater resources using multiple remote sensing technologies and quantification of related hazards, including water resource overdraft, land subsidence, flooding, and anthropogenic and climate droughts. The accepted candidate will apply a suite of statistical and physical models for integrating observations of different accuracies, improving predictions of water resources and/or predicting future hazards.
