PhD position summary/title: Doctoral scholarship holder interpreting studies
Project: Multimodality in simultaneous interpreting: The effect of visual support on cognitive processing and performance. Abstract: In simultaneous interpreting (SI) incoming verbal and nonverbal information from the speaker is frequently complemented by supports such as a slide presentation (with or without captioning) or computer-assisted interpreting (CAI) tools (e.g., terminology software). Yet, the equation between the facilitating effect of these supports in terms of performance and the added cognitive load on information processing lacks empirical investigation. We attempt to fill this gap by investigating the effect of multimodality on interpreters’ performance, visual attention, cognitive load, stress, and user experience. To this end, we will conduct two experimental, within-subject studies involving 12 professional interpreters.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral scholarship holder dynamic economic impact assessment of seaweed biorefineries to support the protein shift
- You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis on the dynamic economic impact assessment of seaweed biorefineries. This PhD research is part of a larger FWO-SBO research project SUPROSEA (Sustainable Proteins from Seaweed) in which a solution is sought for the imminent shortage of protein by cultivating seaweed in Flanders. Seaweed is a promising alternative protein source and can contribute to global food sustainability. The main objective of SUPROSEA is to investigate the sustainability of different seaweed biorefineries in Flanders (North Sea). Within this project, you will contribute to an integrated sustainability impact assessment for seaweed biorefineries. This sustainability assessment will consist of several submodels, including the scaling up of the technology, an environmental assessment, and a dynamic economic assessment. The PhD research will focus on the dynamic economic evaluation of the seaweed biorefineries. In a first step, the economic feasibility of different value chains for the seaweed biorefineries is assessed in a static economic assessment. This static assessment will be combined with real options analysis, to account for the impact of uncertainties on the investment decision. Different types of uncertainties can be considered, including market uncertainty (e.g. fluctuation of prices) and technological uncertainty (e.g. learning effects). The results from the economic assessment reveal the optimal investment timing for various scenarios of the seaweed biorefineries. These results are combined with the environmental impacts in the integrated sustainability impact assessment.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral scholarship holder in vitro dermal scar research
You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis < on cellular and molecular responses of an in vitro dermal model following mechanotherapy (extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT)). Every year, 40-70% of the more than 80 milliondermal scars produced after surgical procedures, trauma, or burns develop into problematic hypertrophic scars. Mechanical forces impact wound healing through mechanotransduction, triggering changes in gene transcription. Although mechanotherapy (e.g. ESWT) is currently used in clinical practice, the factors determining its effectiveness are not known. In this project, we aim to unravel how a mechanical stimulus provoked by ESWT influences cellular and molecular responses in different types of scar tissue. Using an in vitro dermal model, we will consider extracellular matrix stiffness and tissue traction forces. We will collect data on histological, cellular, and molecular scar responses after mechanotherapy.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral scholarship holder medical sciences
There is a great need for a vaccine that can prevent or mitigate Mpox outbreaks in vulnerable populations. Recently, an Mpox strain of clade 1, which is sexually transmissible, has led to a cluster of infections in regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). As a result, the DRC is facing the largest ever increase in Mpox cases. Since 1 January 2023, nearly 19,000 suspected cases of Mpox and more than 1,000 deaths have been reported in the DRC. While Mpox often leads to limited disease, it can cause severe complications, particularly in vulnerable populations such as infants/children and pregnant women. The effectiveness of current vaccines against clade 1 Mpox is uncertain, but data from animal trials are promising.
As part of the PIPoxVac consortium (where Antwerp University is coordinator), we will conduct a phase 3 randomised vaccine trial of a two-dose Mpox vaccine in healthy pregnant and postpartum women and children between 6 months and 2 years old. This study will assess the safety, immunogenicity, and (if possible) efficacy of the vaccine in these populations. We are also conducting a social science study on vaccine hesitancy and participation in vaccine research to inform research design and implementation approaches.
To perform this high quality research within the PIPoxVac project, the Global Health Institute and the Centre for the Evaluation of Vaccination are looking for a doctoral scholarship holder in the field of medical sciences to join and strengthen their team.

PhD position summary/title: PhD molecular and computational neurogenomics
We are a highly motivated international team of researchers at the Molecular Neurogenomics group (Jordanova Lab) and the Computational Neurobiology group (Malysheva Lab) at the VIB CMN. We are excited to announce a call for a joint PhD student in our labs to work on a challenging project at the interface of neurodegeneration, genomics, computational and systems biology.
Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) represents the most common genetic disorder of the peripheral nervous system. Patients experience progressive distal muscle weakness and wasting, sensory loss, and skeletal deformities ultimately leaving them severely disabled. This lifelong disorder is currently incurable. The largest protein family implicated in the etiology of CMT are aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (ARS). Ubiquitous and essential enzymes, ARS catalyse a critical step in protein biosynthesis by charging tRNA with their cognate amino acid. Jordanova Lab reported that dominant mutations in the tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase (YARS) cause a clinical variant of CMT and so far six additional cytoplasmic ARS have been implicated in the same pathology.
The overarching goal of this proposal is to understand why and how dysregulation of omnipresent and constantly expressed ARS proteins leads to dying-back neurodegeneration and affects specifically the peripheral neurons (PNs). This neuronal population contains the most polarized cells in our body and their sophisticated morphology and function render them highly susceptible to degeneration. The preliminary data generated in-house as well as the available public data suggest mechanisms involving genetic, epigenetic and chromatin organisation factors governing the cell-type specific response to ARS mutations. Therefore, an integrative genome-wide cis-regulatory network analysis approaches, developed and employed in the Malysheva Lab, are required to reveal these mechanisms.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral scholarship holder neuroscience with focus on the link between hearing loss and cognitive decline
You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of neurosciences in the Neurochemistry and Behaviour group at the Experimental Neurobiology Unit in collaboration with the Experimental Laboratory of Translational Neuroscience. This 4-year scholarship is focused on the link between hearing loss, cognitive decline and neurodegeneration. The association between hearing impairment and dementia has emerged as a major public health challenge and has triggered increasing interest with significant opportunities for earlier diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Hearing loss appears as a risk factor for cognitive impairment, and has been identified as a potential modifiable age-related condition linked to dementia. Few studies so far have examined the relationship between hearing loss and the molecular changes in the brain, and more specifically in the hippocampus, that lead to cognitive dysfunction. This project aims to unravel the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying cognitive decline induced by inner ear dysfunction in valid mouse models for neurodegeneration.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral scholarship holder experimental nanophysics and nonlinear optics
- You will work actively on the preparation of a PhD thesis in the field of nonlinear optical nanomaterials. This PhD project is part of an FWO project on the multi-scale alignment of carbon-nanotube-encapsulated molecular arrays for nonlinear optics.
- Research Topic: Organic dipolar molecules have attracted much interest over the past decades because of their very large nonlinear optical (NLO) response, holding promise for applications in photonics. Yet, a long standing issue is that to achieve a macroscopic NLO response, the asymmetry intrinsic to dipolar molecules needs to be extended from the molecular scale, over the supramolecular mesoscale, all the way to the macroscopic scale. This PhD project builds on an idea first demonstrated at UAntwerp, that dipolar NLO molecules spontaneously adopt an ideal head-to-tail alignment when confined as one-dimensional arrays inside carbon nanotubes, resulting in a dramatic enhancement of the NLO response by orders of magnitude through a coherent addition of molecular responses (results published in Nature Nanotechnology in 2015). In your PhD project this concept will be elaborated to form highly dipolar NLO nanohybrids (supramolecular scale), and these will be used by the partner at UGent to form aligned polymer fibers and films to extend the alignment throughout the mesoscale and macroscopic scale. The whole process will be modelled by the partner group at the KU Leuven in a multiscale approach, from atomistic simulations of the molecular alignment to large scale coarse grained calculations of the alignment of the nanohybrids. You will study the NLO molecules, nanohybrids and their aligned polymer composites by advanced spectroscopic techniques such as wavelength-dependent Raman scattering, and characterize their NLO properties by hyper-Rayleigh scattering and coherent second harmonic generation, all with world-wide unique setups using widely wavelength-tuneable laser systems. You will collaborate in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team at the interface between physics, chemistry, and materials engineering.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral scholarship holder coastal wetland adaptability to sea level rise
- Project background and objective: Tidal marshes are vital wetland ecosystems but face serious threat from rising sea levels. To survive, they need a consistent supply of suspended sediment to build land and prevent submersion. However, understanding sediment dynamics is complex and remains under-explored, leading to uncertain models of marsh evolution. The project aims to deepen our knowledge of sediment dynamics over space and time, thereby enhancing our ability to better constrain and model sediment supply to tidal marshes. We will conduct field studies in the Scheldt estuary to collect new data on suspended sediment concentration, composition, and sinking speed, considering variations across a tidal marsh landscape and over time, from tidal cycles to multiple years. This data will be then integrated into an advanced numerical model that simulates the dynamic interactions between tidal hydrodynamics, sediment transport and elevation change, and marsh vegetation. By applying the model to different sediment supply scenarios, we aim to improve our assessments of marsh adaptability to sea level rise.
- Project organization: You will work in a team, interacting with prof. Jean-Philippe Belliard and other professors, field and lab technicians, PhD students and post-docs working on coastal wetland bio-geomorphology and other ecological processes in coastal, aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. As this project is in collaboration with the ECODAM research group of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (Brussels, Belgium), you will also closely interact with researchers there working on monitoring sediment dynamics and ecosystem modelling.

About University of Antwerp, Belgium –Official Website
The University of Antwerp (Dutch: Universiteit Antwerpen) is a major Belgian university located in the city of Antwerp. The official abbreviation is UAntwerp. The University of Antwerp has about 20,000 students, which makes it the third-largest university in Flanders. The University of Antwerp is characterised by its high standards in education, internationally competitive research and entrepreneurial approach. It was founded in 2003 after the merger of three smaller universities.
The university’s roots go back to Sint-Ignatius Handelshogeschool (Saint-Ignatius School for Higher Education in Commerce) founded by the Jesuits (Society of Jesus) in Antwerp in 1852. This was one of the first European business schools to offer formal university degrees. It later opened a Faculty of Literature and Philosophy (including Law) and a Faculty of Political and Social Sciences.
