(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title:    Postdoctoral studies in systems biology of mRNA translation (scholarship)

This project is focused on understanding how mRNA translation is altered in cancer. Initially, multimodal data sets from large-scale studies will be used to delineate how mRNA translation is organized and how it interacts with other steps in the gene-expression pathway to control proteome composition. In the second step, the focus will be to identify mechanisms underlying this organization of mRNA translation and how these are altered in cancer. To this end, data sets from both in-vitro models and patient samples will be used.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:    Postdoctoral researcher in computational biology (scholarship)

During the development of obesity and insulin resistance, ectopic lipid accumulation occurs in various organs. In the liver, such condition is called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which can progress to more severe stages, such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis, and/or hepatocellular carcinoma. Liver fibrosis is the most important predictor of prognosis in NAFLD patients. In this project, we will focus on NAFLD and develop an innovative non-invasive machine learning model to monitor the real-time disease progression and future risks of NAFLD patients. The tools developed here will allow patient subgroup stratification at a high resolution and further investigate how the immune system is functional in high-risk NAFLD patients during their longitudinal disease progression.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:    Postdoctoral studies in the field of mitochondrial dysfunction in neurodegeneration (scholarship)

To study the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease (PD). PD is a common neurodegenerative disorder caused by the preferential loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the Substantia nigra of the midbrain. Growing evidence indicates that mitochondrial dysfunction is heavily implicated in both sporadic and familial forms of the disease, although the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Our research aims to unravel how mitochondrial fitness is involved in PD pathophysiology and in the maintenance of dopamine neurons by employing a broad set of biochemical and molecular analyses, cutting-edge technologies, and genetically modified mouse models.

(26) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:    Postdoctoral Researcher in Geriatric Epidemiology

The present position is based on a project aiming to increase our knowledge concerning the dietary determinants of geriatric syndromes. Geriatric syndromes (e.g. multimorbidity, frailty, malnutrition, pain,) are one of the major contributors to ill health among older adults. Contrary to what is the case for most pharmacological interventions, key health-related behaviours, such as maintaining adequate nutrition, could potentially exert powerful influences on these conditions and reduce the risk of death. Nevertheless, the dietary determinants of geriatric syndromes have seldom been researched in depth, which precludes the design of interventions to palliate the expected increase in age-associated health and social needs in the coming decades. Taking advantage of the well-characterized population-based Swedish National Study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen (SNAC-K), we aim to fill some of these knowledge gaps putting geriatric syndromes and the biological mechanisms of aging at the centre, and studying them through the lens of dietary patterns, foods and nutrients.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:    Postdoctoral researcher position in Cell replacement therapy for Parkinson’s disease

We look for two postdoctoral fellows interested in developing precision cell replacement strategies for Parkinson’s disease based on cell engineering. Our laboratory has previously provided proof of concept that the conversion of somatic cells into midbrain dopamine neurons in vivo can rescue motor deficits in a mouse model of PD (Rivetti di val Cervo, 2017, Nature Biotechnology). Expanding on our previous single cell RNA-seqeuncing analysis of the developing human midbrain (La Manno et al., 2016, Cell), we have recently identified a number of factors important for the development and maintenance of adult DA neuron subtype identity (bioRxiv 2022.10.24.513487 and 2022.10.12.511898). We now aim at engineering somatic cells into subtype-specific DA neurons in order to develop more precise cell replacement strategies for Parkinson’s disease.

About The Karolinska Institute, Sweden – Official Website

The Karolinska Institute sometimes known as the (Royal) Caroline Institute in English is a research-led medical university in Solna within the Stockholm urban area of Sweden. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The assembly consists of fifty professors from various medical disciplines at the university. The current rector of Karolinska Institute is Ole Petter Ottersen, who took office in August 2017.

The Karolinska Institute was founded in 1810 on the island of Kungsholmen on the west side of Stockholm; the main campus was relocated decades later to Solna, just outside Stockholm. A second campus was established more recently in Flemingsberg, Huddinge, south of Stockholm.

The Karolinska Institute is Sweden’s third oldest medical school, after Uppsala University (founded in 1477) and Lund University (founded in 1666). It is one of Sweden’s largest centres for training and research, accounting for 30% of the medical training and more than 40% of all academic medical and life science research conducted in Sweden.

The Karolinska University Hospital, located in Solna and Huddinge, is associated with the university as a research and teaching hospital. Together they form an academic health science centre. While most of the medical programs are taught in Swedish, the bulk of the PhD projects are conducted in English. The institute’s name is a reference to the Caroleans.
