: Applications are invited for appointment as Post-doctoral Fellow in the Department of Pediatrics, to commence as soon as possible for one year, with the possibility of renewal. The appointee will have the opportunity to work with both local and national multi-disciplinary teams to enhance the health care outcomes of at-risk infants. The appointee will be involved in the research activities related to the Canadian Neonatal Network (CNN), Evidence-based Practice Quality Improvement (EPIQ), and other provincial & national databases. These studies are currently funded through two CIHR grants, as well as other provincial/ local research funding. 

The postdoctoral fellow will work in a multi-disciplinary group of computer scientists and their students. For information about the Amii Fellows and their research, see our people. Applicants are not required to be working directly in the area of an Amii fellow as long as they can make a compelling research proposal that connects the proposed work. For example, someone may propose working with fellows to explore the equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) implications of machine learning, even if the fellows are not directly working on research related to EDI. As the fellows perform research in broad areas of AI, candidates working in areas outside of machine learning are also encouraged to apply.

The Canadian Center for Vaccinology invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in vaccine safety research. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be supervised by Karina Top, MD, MS, lead of the Special Immunization Clinic (SIC) Network, co-lead for the International Network of Special Immunization Services (INSIS), and vaccine safety lead for the Pediatric Outcomes Improvement through Coordination of Research Networks (POPCORN). Dr. Top is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta. The Fellow will take a leading role to contribute to the management, coordination, and execution of a diverse range of research activities focused on vaccine safety for COVID-19 and other vaccines. The candidate will also have the opportunity to develop new research projects of mutual interest in consultation with Dr. Top. The SIC Network is a network within the Canadian Immunization Research Network (CIRN) that aims to improve immunization practices for patients who had experienced adverse events following immunization and those who have medical conditions that may affect their response to immunizations. Current areas of focus include adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination and vaccination of immunocompromised patients. The SIC network is collaborating with INSIS on studies investigating the risk factors and pathogenesis of adverse events following COVID-19 vaccines through a systems biology approach.

The Department of Computing Science, and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), at the University of Alberta have an immediate opening for one postdoctoral fellow to work with Amii Fellow Professor Osmar Zaiane in the area of Artificial Intelligence research. Amii is one of three centers of excellence in the Pan-Canadian AI strategy. The postdoc position is to start as soon as a candidate is identified and will last for a period of two years subject to satisfactory performance.  The postdoctoral fellow will work on a research project related to Machine Malfunction Prediction and Machine Adaptation using Machine Learning. This project investigates effective means to automatically predict machine failures and strategies to adapt a malfunctioning machine to continue its mission before maintenance can be performed. The research applies Machine learning and Data Mining and focuses on Reinforcement Learning techniques to achieve these goals. For the postdoc position, we look for someone with sufficient knowledge and research experience in machine learning, reinforcement learning and GFlowNets.

The main responsibilities of the Post-Doctoral Fellow are carried out in consultation with the Principal Investigator and include:

• Participates into the research design and coordination of all the research activities at participating sites.
• Participates in the development of specific research objectives in consultation with the Principal Investigator.
• Prepares and submits ethics application renewals and/or amendments.
• Provides input into the appropriate data collection tool.
• Undertakes data collection at local site.
• Supervises data collection in other participating sites and provides support.
• Conducts data analysis.

• Conduct quantitative analyses for a variety of epidemiology and environmental health-based research project
• Lead and contribute to the drafting, revising, and submission of research manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals
• Provide mentorship for graduate student trainees, undergraduate assistants, and other research staff
• Support data management and other research activities within the lab
• Contribute to the conception, development, and submission of research grants, including taking the lead on funding opportunities to develop a PDF research program
• Prepare and present research findings at academic conferences, public meetings, and other venues (e.g., media outlets, online website and newsletter, meeting with stakeholders)

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) to undertake Geographical Information Systems (GIS) assessments for the project. Tasks will include but are not limited to: research design, data collection, data analysis, and data dissemination via conference presentations, reports, and peer-reviewed publications. The PDF will conduct geospatial data analysis and management using open-source geographic information and relational database management systems (ArcGIS, QGIS, PostgreSQL, PostGIS) with proprietary and open-source data sources (e.g., DMTI, Municipal Government, OSM), compile and manage spatial and non-spatial data, and build and design cartographic/mapping visualizations. The PDF may also be required to create geographic variables using Global Positioning System (GPS), GIS, and accelerometer data using software such as ArcGIS and HABITUS, and/or complete built environment audits using observational methods.

We are looking for an individual with research experience broadly in the area of energy and environmental systems engineering. Individuals applying for this position should have an interest and some research experience in life cycle assessment of energy systems specifically in energy conversion pathways. The candidate should have experience in developing LCA models for the estimation of the environmental impacts of energy systems. Relevant experience using LCA software will be a desirable asset. The postdoc will learn our procedures and apply those with our 2 state of the art multi-probe ultra high vacuum tools to exactingly fabricate, image at the atom scale and measure transport properties of proto quantum devices. Examples of planned devices include an atom-defined SET that is free of the stray charge limitations that plague other designs, and, a Pauli spin-blockade magnetometer that can be extremely portable and room temperature operable while requiring only electronic controls (no lasers as for NV center-based sensors).

Additive Design and Manufacturing Systems Laboratory has an immediate vacancy for a Postdoctoral fellow or a research associate in serial robotics and industrial automation. Candidates with experience in the Robot Operating System (ROS) or PLC based control of robotic arms will be preferred. This position will be open to candidates who possess an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Science, or a relevant discipline, and a Ph.D. in the area of serial robotics, advanced robotic manufacturing automation, or additive manufacturing. Additive Design and Manufacturing Systems Laboratory has an immediate vacancy for a Postdoctoral fellow with direct research and development experience in robotics and Robot Operating System (ROS). Candidates with experience in industrial robotics application to additive manufacturing processes will be preferred. One Postdoctoral Fellowship position is available in the Epidemiological Methods for Equity Research to Generate Evidence (EMERGE) Research Lab in the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta, Canada. The applicant will work on a CIHR-funded project investigating the role of public health on adolescent health during the COVID-19 pandemic. The fellow will work closely with Dr. Roman Pabayo (lead investigator of the EMERGE Research Lab) and Dr. Brendan Smith at Public Health Ontario (co-principal investigator).

The candidate should have experience developing techno-economic models for the estimation of the viability of these types of energy systems. We are looking for an individual with research experience broadly in the area of energy and environmental systems engineering. Individuals applying for this position should have an interest and some experience in integrated resource planning and modelling focused on energy demand and supply. We are developing environmental footprints (e.g., greenhouse gas emissions, $/tonne of CO₂) of energy demand and supply sectors for a particular jurisdiction. The individual should have some experience working with relevant energy forecasting and planning models (e.g., LEAP, MARKAL). The candidate is expected to carry out research on assigned project(s). One position for post-doctoral fellow is now open in S. Kar’s lab: Dr. S. Kar, affiliated with the Department of Medicine (Neurology), is a neuroscience researcher with vivid interest in Alzheimer disease pathogenesis. His research has been funded by federal organizations including Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). He is seeking one postdoctoral fellow with experience in neuronal culture and/or animal models of neurodegenerative diseases to work on a multidisciplinary project dedicated to establishing therapeutic potential of nanoparticles in the treatment of Alzheimer disease pathology. The research program involves in vitro study as well as cellular and animal models of Alzheimer’s disease. This work ranges from advanced biophysical and cell biology methods to animal behavior.

The Memory for Events (ME) Lab (PI: Dr. Peggy L. St. Jacques) at the University of Alberta invites applications for a fully funded postdoctoral researcher to lead cognitive neuroscience research investigating memory for real-world events. The postdoc will contribute to research examining the neural mechanisms by which people form and remember immersive memories for realistic events. Candidates excited about functional neuroimaging of memory for real-world events, the role of visual perspective in shaping mental models of events, and/or the use of state-of-the-art immersive virtual reality methodologies to study event memory are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will have a PhD in psychology and/or neuroscience, and a record of publishing fMRI research using advanced methods to study memory (e.g., MVPA, network analysis). A strong quantitative background and competency in programming environments such as Matlab, SPM, Python, R, and Psychtoolbox is also required. Familiarity with Unity/C# and/or immersive virtual reality methodologies (e.g., Oculus Rift) is highly desirable but not required.

His current projects include discoveries leading to new metabolism (mitochondria) – based treatments of cancer, heart failure, vascular biology (pulmonary hypertension); the molecular regulation of translation during stress, as well as an exciting new and very novel program on the hibernation of human lungs and hearts that studies hibernating snails, human cells and human organs obtained at transplant surgery. His lab has dedicated equipment funded by 3 large CFI grants over the years, including a high resolution confocal microscope. He has 2 large labs in the AHFMR building with dedicated offices and additional space in the Katz building. He has previously received a mentor award from the FOMD. In 2018, Circulation Research named him a “Leader in Cardiovascular Sciences”. Dr. Suzette Brémault-Phillips (principal investigator) and the Heroes in Mind, Advocacy and Research Consortium (HiMARC), in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta, are looking to fill multiple Postdoctoral Fellow researcher positions, both full-time and part-time. The Indigenous and Global Health Research Group (IGHRG) led by Dr. Sangita Sharma, the Alberta Health Services Chair in Indigenous Health, in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta is currently accepting applications for a postdoctoral position. The IGHRG is a multi-disciplinary research group of 25+ staff that was established by Dr. Sharma in 2010. Dr. Sharma and the team have an extensive international background working with over 22 populations in various countries worldwide but now primarily focus on working with Indigenous and/or ethnic minority populations in Alberta, Northwest Territories (NT), and Nunavut (NU). Current funded projects include: assessing health and wellness and access to healthcare services with Indigenous seniors and Elders living in NT; maternal and infant health care and outcomes for Indigenous populations in NT; identifying the barriers to and opportunities for improving access to healthcare services for Indigenous populations in NT to inform culturally appropriate programming to improve patient experiences; capturing the anticipated and unanticipated consequences of COVID-19 preventive measures with Indigenous communities in NU and NT; and working with NT Indigenous communities to understand the perspectives of community members toward HPV, HPV vaccination along with attitudes towards and experience with the COVID-19 vaccine.
