The King group is recruiting a postdoc/researcher to help develop and run a mass spectrometry laboratory unit for the robot scientist Genesis. Genesis is being engineered as an automated laboratory with the hardware for 10 000 parallel microchemostat cultivations. Sample analysis units of Genesis include mass spectrometry untargeted metabolomics and sequencing for transcriptome profiling. The metabolomics unit consists of liquid handling robots, an Agilent RapidFire Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) system, an Agilent 6560 ion mobility quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Genesis software is being designed to operate the laboratory system, select the most feasible experiment and analyze data for yeast model refinement.

The Division of Subatomic, High-Energy and Plasma Physics performs research on theoretical and experimental subatomic physics, mathematical and high-energy physics, plasma and fusion physics, as well as nuclear physics. This diversity of research topics allows us to connect fundamental questions about the particles and forces governing our Universe to energy-related research. The methods of our investigations are also diverse and complementary, and range from theory and computer simulations to experiments in subatomic physics. The Plasma Theory group within the Division conducts research on acceleration and radiation generation in magnetic fusion, laser-produced and astrophysical plasmas.  We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join the Extreme Plasma Flares project, a collaboration between the Swedish Institute of Space Science (IRF), Uppsala and Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm.  Plasma flares – explosive releases of magnetic energy – play a central role in such diverse phenomena as solar flares, aurora and fusion plasmas. One of the outstanding questions is what conditions lead to the most extreme electron acceleration events, creating massive energy fluxes at highly supra-thermal, up to relativistic, energies.

The position – starting date, if possible, in the first half of 2024 – will be placed in the theory division of the Department for Microtechnology and Nanoscience at Chalmers, where diverse research from quantum transport, quantum information, and quantum materials to quantum thermodynamics is carried out. The hired Postdoc will work in the group “Dynamics and Thermodynamics of nanoscale devices”, lead by Janine Splettstoesser . The specific research project of this position will deal with energy conversion of electronic and hybrid devices and with the analysis and optimization of the performance of conversion processes. Specific focus will be on the unique properties of these devices when they exploit nonthermal resources, which might arise as a steady-state effect or as the result of transient or time-dependently driven states. The long-term vision of this project is to explore realistic settings in which such energy conversion processes can be exploited on-chip in quantum technologies.

The position is part of an interdisciplinary research collaboration between the groups of Matthias Geilhufe (theory), Lars Öhrström (synthesis), and Samuel Lara Avila (device fabrication), funded by the Nano area of advance at Chalmers. The aim of this research effort is to investigate the potential of 2D metal organic frameworks as quantum materials, with respect to strong correlations, topology, and unconventional degrees of freedom.

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to study Arctic climate change and carbon cycle dynamics. The overarching objective is to advance our understanding of recent changes in the Arctic carbon cycle, such as Arctic greening and browning, and to link these changes with other Arctic climate phenomena including Arctic amplification and wetting. There will be considerable freedom to define the specific research questions and approach in collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI).

Locally produced legumes are among the most sustainable food sources that are good for both human health and the planet. However, the current Swedish pea value chain is underutilized, where almost all the peas produced in Sweden end up in feed applications. Its shift to food application is challenged by beany flavors and the presence of antinutrients. The newly FORMAS-funded project called SwedPea aims to address those challenges in both lab and pilot scale by introducing innovative solutions. We are offering a two-year postdoctoral position to an ambitious researcher who is interested in working on legumes as a sustainable and healthy protein source and making them tastier and healthier. The postdoctoral researcher will work at the Division of Food and Nutrition Science and in close collaboration with Kristianstad University and Lantmännen 

This postdoc project focuses on exploring and utilizing optical metasurfaces, a new kind of flat nanostructured optical components with a wide variety of applications. We are currently developing metasurfaces integrated with surface-emitting lasers, were applications range from optical biosensing to microscopy [Juodènas et al, Light: Science and Appl. (2023) 12:251]. We also develop tiny optically driven microbots based on metasurfaces [Andrén et al, Nature Nanotech. (2019) 16:270], as well as photothermal elements for microfluidics applications [Dara et al, J.Phys.Chem. C (2023) 127:35]. The position may involve cleanroom work, optical simulations, optical experiments, and/or development of proof-of-principle devises within one or more of those projects. You will work in a team of students and senior researchers with complementary competences ranging from nanofabrication to biophotonics research.

The Microwave Electronics Laboratory (MEL) is the second largest out of eight laboratories at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience. At MEL we are more than 30 people performing world-class research on high speed electronic components, circuits, and systems for a wide range of communication, industrial, and remote sensing applications in the frequency range from 1 GHz to 500 GHz and beyond. Our facilities include a uniquely well-equipped laboratory for advanced millimeter wave measurements. A major part our research is targeting the need for higher capacity and improved energy efficiency in future wireless communication systems. We now investigate drastically new wireless solutions, involving in-house designed integrated circuits working at frequencies from 120-330 GHz with bandwidths exceeding 100GHz. This postdoctoral position aims to explore the possibilities of modern high-speed semiconductor technology for realization of high performance integrated transmitter and receiver circuits for future wireless systems and radar. Of particular interest is to use the latest state-of-the-art silicon integrated circuit technologies stretching the performance limits such as bandwidth, output power and datarate, for applications related to 6G and beyond. The projects are mainly financed by three new EU-projects, CoreNext, 6GTandem and TeraGreen.

This position at the department of Electrical Engineering is an opportunity to be a part of creative and globally relevant research network addressing communication network security. By combining AI/ML and networking knowledge, you will be able to take initiative, design, and implement functionalities for enhancing the achievable levels of 5G network security. The developed techniques may be validated on cutting-edge network management frameworks in collaboration with our international research partners. Ultimately, the research carried out in this project has the potential to improve sustainability of the global communication network infrastructure.

Renewable energy systems such as solar and wind power are at the centre of the transition to less carbon-intensive and more sustainable energy systems. To compensate for their downtimes in energy production, the possibility to store energy in form of molecules such as hydrogen or methanol, needs to be developed. Electrocatalytic water splitting into the green energy carrier hydrogen and into oxygen (Oxygen Evolution Reaction, OER) using solar and wind power constitutes such a promising sustainable pathway. Another important reaction is the electrochemical reduction of the greenhouse gas CO2 into value-added products. To this end, novel electrocatalyst materials of improved activity and selectivity need to be developed, also to replace the costly and rare noble metal catalysts currently used. This requires an understanding of the interplay between the catalyst structure, its surface chemistry and the catalytic activity on the atomic scale under reaction conditions. In this project you will prepare and investigate model electrocatalysts using the techniques available at Chalmers and the synchrotron-based surface-sensitive operando methods used in our group. By joining our newly established research group, you will have the opportunity to coin the research profile based on your interests and experience, focusing on the aforementioned research area. We currently focus on the investigation of OER electrocatalysts, yet, based on the background and the interests of the candidate, other electrochemical reactions and processes linked to the activities at the Division can be considered.

Thermonuclear fusion is one of very few long-term solutions for a sustainable base load electricity production with negligible environmental impact and minimal security and safety concern. We are now looking for a new team member to join our research team to help advance the understanding of turbulence and transport in the plasma under reactor conditions – a critical part in the design and exploitation of the next step fusion experiments.

Astronomy and plasma physics (AoP) division at the Space, Earth and Environment (SEE) department at Chalmers hosts about 45 staff members involved in research activities such as active galactic nucleii, evolved stars, exoplanets, galaxy evolution, interstellar medium, star formation, as well as fusion plasma physics. The division also collaborates with the Onsala Space Observatory that hosts, e.g., the Nordic ALMA Regional Center node, and is the SKA center for Sweden. We seek for an outstanding postdoctoral fellow to carry out an independent research program that addresses the 3-dimensional nature of the interstellar medium (ISM). The fellow’s research interests and program should exploit the latest advances in 3D mapping of the Galactic ISM to gain insights on the physical processes in the ISM and/or the initial conditions of star formation. The program can have observational or theoretical focus; it can also have Galactic or extra-galactic focus. The program should also connect with the interests of the on-going 3D ISM studies led by Assoc. Prof. Jouni Kainulainen and Asst. Prof. Georgia Panopoulou. The candidate is also expected to participate in building a positive, inclusive work environment at the division.

Applications are invited for up to three postdoctoral positions, two in the area of low-mass evolved stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and one in the area of high-mass evolved stars in the red supergiant (RSG) phase.  The research for one position will be within our project about probing the extended atmospheres of AGB stars, for the second position in the investigation of the wind-Interstellar Medium (ISM) interaction regions around AGB stars, and for the third position in the investigation of molecular emission and the mass-loss process around RSGs. The postdoctoral positions will be for 2-years with a possible 1 year extension dependent on the availability of funding. The succesful applicants will work with Prof. Wouter Vlemmings, Dr. Theo Khouri, Dr. Matthias Maercker, Dr. Elvire De Beck, as well as other members of the evolved star research group in AoP.

The research in this project will use electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to study thin film deposition, in situ and in real time. Thin films, for example Cu, produced with electrochemical deposition on different substrates, with and without addition of specific additives. In the next phase, the produced films will act as substrate onto which we will investigate the formation of the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) in different battery electrolytes as well as early stages of Li-metal deposition. The EQCM and EIS measurements will be complemented with ex situ microscopy and spectroscopy analysis. The goal of the project is to increase knowledge about thin film deposition and formation of SEI layers in batteries. The project focuses on understanding thin film formation and developing new tools to monitor the quality and properties of thin films in situ and in real time.

Optomechanics is a vibrant research field spanning multiple disciplines within physics. Reaching the deep quantum regime imposes strict requirements on the mechanical and optical performance of mechanical resonators. These micrometer-sized devices are now routinely fabricated in the Chalmers cleanroom, but the challenge remains to achieve resonator designs with ultra-low optical loss while retaining strong optomechanical coupling and good mechanical properties. Recent advances towards optimized nano-optical devices have drawn on inverse design methods using machine learning. In this postdoctoral project, the focus will be on implementing machine learning methods for designing and optimizing the optical and optomechanical performance while maintaining favourable mechanical properties. Thus, the initial stage of this project is focused on the design of nano-optic resonators. The research will be carried out in close proximity to researchers in the division working on inverse design of nanomechanical devices. The second stage of the project aims to integrate the two approaches into a single framework.

The lithium-ion battery market is currently experiencing exponential growth all over the world. As one of the important components in both current lithium-ion batteries and future batteries, the binder plays a critical role not only in the mechanical properties of the formed electrode but also in determining the long-term cycling performance of the battery. However, the binders used for both anode (especially silicon-based anode) and cathode have their challenges and issues. The current postdoc position will focus on the development of a new binder system for electrode processing, which includes both the synthesis/modification of the binder and also development of a new electrode manufacturing process based on the developed binder. This is a fundamental research but also a practical application-oriented project. You will closely work with researchers in both academia and industry, in a multidisciplinary research environment. Join our dynamic research team in exploring carbon management in the energy system. Our project aims to assess the role of carbon capture, utilisation and storage for achieving negative greenhouse gas emissions in the sector-coupled European energy system, and to identify resilient strategies for competing carbon usage options such as e-fuel production and carbon storage. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute policy-relevant knowledge on negative emissions in the energy system, in collaboration with a strong international network of energy system model developers.

We are looking for a postdoc eager to explore the possibilities in the latest atom probe tomography (APT) technology, and to apply this to atomic-scale steel research. The postdoc will work in a small research group, which has a long-standing tradition in atom probe research and a well-equipped lab for materials characterization.

This project proposes and demonstrates a novel system for integrated passenger and goods transport, consisting of flexible public transport with modular vehicles and last-mile travel/delivery service with active micromobility. Modular vehicles could flexibly change capacity by adjusting the number of connected and segregated cabins that carry either passengers or goods. The proposed system is compatible with current infrastructure, technically ready, and has great potential to reduce the use of or even replace private vehicles with comparable services. In this project, we focus on 1) business model development and demand matching of passengers and goods, 2) operational system design and optimization, 3) safety, social, and sustainable impacts analysis, and 4) proof of concept with field demonstration. We formulate the following tasks, that are associated with the Postdoc’s research.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is a joint department at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, with activities on both campuses. Research at the Department of Space, Earth and Environment (SEE) addresses fundamental scientific topics. On the one hand, we focus on basic science related to the origins of universe, of our planet and of life. On the other, we observe what is happening on Earth today and develop methods, tools and models that enable us to look towards the future and find solutions to global challenges about resources, energy supply and environmental impact. The research in the division of Astronomy and Plasma Physics (AoP) covers a wide range of topics, including evolved stars, interstellar medium, astrochemistry, star and planet formation, exoplanets,  observational cosmology, galaxy formation and evolution and galaxy clusters. The activities of AoP are situated at the main Johanneberg Campus and at the Onsala Space Observatory (OSO), which is the Swedish national facility for Radio Astronomy. The observatory operates telescopes in Sweden, shares in the APEX telescope in Chile, and hosts the Nordic ALMA Regional Center (ARC).   

Our modern society depends entirely on global networks for high-capacity data communications, in which almost all data is carried by optical fibers. The physical layer algorithms in such communication systems are traditionally optimized for transmitting bit streams and are not optimal for modern packet-oriented applications. The aim of this project is to bridge this gap by designing innovative coding and decoding algorithms, inspired by a similar paradigm shift in wireless communications. The project is led by Professor Erik Agrell (IEEE Fellow) and funding is provided by a prestigious grant from the Swedish Research Council. The research will be carried out in collaboration with a well-known research group at the University of Toronto, Canada.

This project addresses the challenge of developing test robots capable of realistically imitating humans riding 2-wheelers. This will enable repeatable experiments where the 2-wheeler carries a dummy, for developing and validating active and passive safety systems in cars and trucks as well as studies of drivers’ behavior when interacting with these 2-wheelers. Self-driving bikes and E-scooters have in earlier projects been designed and built, but there remains a lot of control design to be done by you. As the successful candidate you will play an essential role in the development of blue and UV VCSELs or PCSELs. These devices have potential applications in disinfection, medical analysis and treatment, material processing, visualisation technologies, biological and chemical research, etc. You will be given the opportunity to work in one of the world-leading groups in the area and combine device characterization with simulations or device fabrication, in close collaboration with other partners who are experts on epitaxial growth.

This research project aligns with the contemporary movement towards greener processes for production of chemicals. The overall aim is to establish correlations between synthesis and structure of oxyhydride materials as well as their catalytic function for hydrogenation of CO2 into useful oxygenates and chemoselective hydrogenation of hydrocarbons. The project is organised as a twin post-doctoral project, i.e., two postdoc positions with close connection. The first position is focused on synthesis and characterization of oxyhydrides, and determination of catalytic properties. You will outline synthesis protocols for preparation of systematically varied material compositions, carry out basic characterization of general physicochemical properties, and test their catalytic function(s) using chemical flow-reactors. In addition, in situ and operando infrared spectroscopy will be used to understand their catalytic function(s) in detail.

The position relates to projects within the Swedish Competence Centre ANItA (Academic-industrial Nuclear technology Initiative to Achieve a sustainable energy future), which integrates Swedish technical and nontechnical expertise of Uppsala University, Chalmers, KTH, Vattenfall, Uniper, Fortum, Westinghouse, Studsvik Nuclear and the Swedish Energy Agency in nuclear technology and engineering. Collaborative research, development and education of the centre aims to create a Swedish knowledge and competence base needed for the introduction of novel nuclear power technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and provide relevant information, in particular, to policymakers for timely decisions on the future Swedish energy generation mix.

The successful candidate will join our experimental team in advancing our capabilities on quantum information processing of superconducting bosonic modes, also called continuous-variables systems. Compared to two-level superconducting qubits, the bosonic architectures may bring advantages such as longer coherence times, resource-efficient quantum error correction, and well-understood loss channels. Our group recently demonstrated the preparation, manipulation, and tomography of a logical qubit encoded in a highly coherent bosonic mode. Now we plan to exploit the high dimensionality of the bosonic mode Hilbert space to (i) implement quantum error correction protocols and (ii) extend our platform to multiple cavities to demonstrate a verifiable quantum speed up advantage. You will be part of a larger team of researchers and PhD students driving our research on bosonic modes. Alternative projects within the scope of quantum thermodynamics and quantum-enabling technologies can also be discussed. The designs, workflows, fabrication processes, measurement techniques are closely related to those of traditional superconducting qubits. Hence, we work in close collaboration with the core effort within the WACQT center to build a large-scale quantum computer.

The selected candidate will be embedded into an interdisciplinary environment between the Chalmers departments of Computer Science and Engineering as well as Chemistry and Chemical engineering, and the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT, www.wacqt.se). This inter-disciplinary research project is part of an on-going collaboration between the groups of Simon Olsson, Anton Frisk Kockum, and Martin Rahm to enable quantum chemistry on quantum computers aided by machine learning. The selected candidate will be based at the Computer Science and Engineering department yet enjoy full access to and a work-place at WACQT and the Chemistry and Chemical Engineering departments.
