The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 520 employees and a revenue 2022 of 518 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Aging Research Center (ARC), a division within NVS, is located at KI Campus Solna, Stockholm. It is a multidisciplinary academic environment, representing medicine (e.g., neurology, epidemiology, psychiatry, geriatrics), psychology (e.g., cognition, structural, functional, and molecular brain imaging), and social gerontology (e.g., sociology, public health, social epidemiology, social work). The center has around 70 employees, it has a strong focus on research with unique research resources, such as large-scale longitudinal studies and nationwide registries.

We are seeking a highly talented, innovative, and enthusiastic researcher who has been awarded a Ph.D. in cognitive neuroscience or a related field within the past two years. The successful candidate will work on projects focused on body representation, bodily illusions, multisensory integration, embodied cognition, or processes related to bodily self-awareness, including the sense of body ownership. The ideal candidate should possess expertise in experimental psychology or cognitive neuroscience, with a preference for skills in psychophysics and computational modeling, and/or proficiency in neuroimaging methods, especially multivoxel pattern analyses, and/or experience with human electrophysiology (EEG, MEG) or brain stimulation methods (e.g., TMS). The candidate will be expected to work within the framework of our research program (www.ehrssonlab.se), yet will have considerable freedom to develop their own ideas and project proposals that align with the scholarship program’s goals of fostering career development and international experience. The ability to work independently, initiate and lead novel research projects, and prepare high-quality draft manuscripts for research articles is crucial. Applicants must demonstrate an excellent academic track record, including high-quality publications in international peer-reviewed journals.

We are seeking two postdoctoral researchers that are keen on cutting-edge microscopy and/or genome analysis, enjoy making fundamental discoveries in cancer research and are eager to learn and share complementary skills and expertise that will boost their career as well as our interdisciplinary research. Both postdocs will build on our successful proof-of-concept studies and will play a key part in the Lemmens laboratory and Genome Biology division.

We have an opening for an individual wishing to join a multidisciplinary team aimed to understand the biochemical dysregulations that drive the development of asthma. Towards that end, the successful applicant will take the lead in analyzing multiple projects that involve integrating metabolomics and lipidomics data with other omics (e.g., proteomics, transcriptomics) as well as clinical phenotyping data. The primary challenge will be to identify the key molecular drivers of the different sub-types of asthma. Much of the work will involve the use of data from the U-BIOPRED project to investigate severe asthma (https://bit.ly/41gv8iY), as well as metabolomics data from multiple intervention trials to investigate the use of biologics to treat asthma. The overarching aim is to use the findings to develop diagnostic tests for identifying molecular sub-phenotypes of asthma.

The Björkegren lab aims to reveal fundamental molecular mechanisms that are essential for chromosome organization, dynamics, and function. The group focuses their research on the family of SMC protein complexes that controls most chromosomal processes, including the 3D organization of the genome, transcription, and chromosome repair and segregation. Combining investigations of in vivo models with biochemical and single molecule in vitro investigations, the Björkegren team unravels the function of the Smc5/6 complex, known for its function in viral restriction and organism development. Currently, the group focuses their research on a recently discovered connection between SMC complexes, chromosome 3D organization, and transcription-induced changes in the DNA helix, so called DNA supercoiling.

Our research group has performed single-cell/spatial omics studies, identifying for instance several cell states within the oligodendrocyte lineage in development and disease (Science 2016, Dev Cell 2018, Nature Medicine 2018, Nature 2019, Nature Biotechnology 2021, 2022, Neuron 2022, Nature 2023, among others). Our recent findings suggest that oligodendrocyte lineage cells might present other functional properties than previously thought, transitioning for instance to disease-associated states. In addition, our results also suggest that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with multiple sclerosis susceptibility might be operational in oligodendrocyte lineage cells. 

The successful candidate will play a leading role in a limited-term (5 years) full-time research project funded by the European Research Council Advanced Grant, focused on studying the functional role of single nucleotide polymorphisms in the oligodendroglia lineage and its implication in multiple sclerosis. The multidisciplinary project involves in-vivo work, master molecular biology, master-cell culture techniques, flow cytometry/cell sorting and single-cell & spatial omics.  

We have an opening for an individual wishing to join a multidisciplinary project aimed to understand the role of lipid mediators in lung disease. The successful candidate will be expected to use and further develop mass spectrometry-based methods for quantification of lipid mediators including eicosanoids (see https://bit.ly/49egFb5), novel octadecanoids (see https://bit.ly/46Nw1Bx) and other oxylipins (see https://bit.ly/4987w3J). Analyses will involve further development of novel chromatography approaches including chiral and UPC2 methods for applications in large scale clinical studies as well as experimental models to map the biochemical role of lipid mediators in the pathobiology of lung disease. Functional studies will be performed in multiple cell types, in ex vivo lung tissue and in animal models as well as in microbial cultures to generate a biochemical map of both pro-inflammatory and pro-resolving lipid mediators. Team Erica Zeglio, is seeking a Post-Doctoral Researcher in the field of “in vitro electrophysiology”, with a focus on printed microelectrode arrays for extracellular recording of cardiac cells. Mainly, the candidate will work with cardiac cell models and will develop and optimize in vitro electrophysiology recording platforms.

This project focuses on the development of potential drugs that target amyloid and tau pathology for AD and other neurodegenerative diseases. We combine structural biology techniques such as computer aided drug design, biophysical and biochemical methods to develop potential drug candidates. We investigate biological effects of these candidates in different cell and animal models and validate them in proof-of-concept experiments.

The position involves the development of small molecules targeting intracellular interactions. Specifically, the duties include in silico drug design using virtual screening, hit-to-lead compound development, predictive artificial intelligence, lead optimization, plasmid manufacture, protein production, biophysical assays (such as thermal shift, isothermal titration calorimetry, surface plasmon resonance and biolayer interferometry), amplified luminescent proximity homogenous assay, cell culture and co-immunoprecipitation.

The main focus of the studies is to monitor T cell responses induced by infection and vaccination. The studies build on recent work identifying epitopes recognized by CD8+ T cells during infections by viruses linked to type 1 diabetes and include the use of humanized mouse models, enteroviruses and new vaccines against such viruses. Assessments include the use of methods to monitor virus replication and tissue damage, HLA-I multimer assays and advanced flow cytometry. The studies may also include investigations into the B cell- and antibody response to infection and vaccination.

Mitochondria are sub-cellular organelles essential for eukaryotic cell function, and their dysfunction has been implicated in a variety of hereditary diseases, ageing, cancer and immunity. The correct expression of mitochondrial DNA is essential for mitochondrial function. The aim of studies in Rorbach group is to identify the pathways and factors important to human diseases and improve our understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of mitochondrial function. We employ diverse model systems and multidisciplinary approaches to address these questions, including cryo-EM, high-throughput gene targeting, proteomics and RNASeq-based ribosome profiling. The Postdoc will be working in Professor Staffan Strömblad’s research group, which focuses on the role of cell-matrix interactions and signaling in cancer. The group holds a mix of senior researchers, postdocs and PhD students and uses in its research a broad array of methods, including advanced light microscopy and image analysis, transgenic mouse cancer models, multiplexed tissue image analysis, modern global omics techniques and a range of molecular, biochemistry and cell-based methods.

You will work in a project funded by the Swedish Research Council where we describe, explain and investigate the effects of gender differences in cognition and behavior on real life outcomes. We address questions relating to the importance of sex chromosomes and fetal androgen exposure in sex differences, and whether it is possible to identify patterns of cognitive skills and behaviors that constitute meaningful sex-typical profiles, as well as whether such sex-typical profiles provide an understanding of why there are such large gender differences in career choices. We collect new data but also use Swedish register data. The work includes, in addition to usual research work, managing a web-based large data collection, acquiring (Swedish) register data, programming, and statistically analyzing complex relationships. The position may also include participation in teaching and supervision of bachelor and master students.

The ultimate goal is to develop novel treatment strategies and biomarkers for Alzheimer disease. To reach this goal we will elucidate the pathological pathways that lead to Alzheimer disease at the molecular and cellular level. In our studies we use neuronal cultures as well as brain tissue from mouse or human. You will analyze Alzheimer-related pathways in primary neurons by using confocal and super-resolution microscopy. You will be responsible for preparing primary cultures of cortical and hippocampal mouse or rat neurons and labeling these with appropriate antibodies and labels. Other cell biological and biochemical approaches will also be used. Mass spectrometric approaches will be used to identify molecules – for instance glycoproteins and glycans – involved in pathogenesis. Finally, molecules and delivery systems targeting the pathogenic pathways will be developed.

As a postdoctoral researcher you are expected to contribute to build a new interdisciplinary research field on health impacts of extreme events under global changes with a specific focus on vulnerable groups. Specifically, the position focuses on two overarching themes over a two-year period: contributing to transnational studies and investigating the health impacts of an extreme. You will use population-scale linked electronic health records study across Sweden, the UK, Italy and Spain to examine the impacts of respiratory virus infections during pregnancy on maternal and infant health and the adaptation to non-optimal and extreme temperature among vulnerable groups.

As a post-doctoral researcher, you will be responsible for your specific research project(s), namely the nano-scale interactions between the extracellular matrix components, and expected to develop innovative experimental approaches, creative project ideas and subsequently lines of research in theory and practice to effectively answer the posed research question(s). Your experimental approaches include bacterial genetics and biochemical and structural approaches. You will be working primarily with Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli as the model organism. You are, however, expected to flexibly apply similar research questions to other model organisms and to contribute to other ongoing research projects. You are also expected to set up novel experimental approaches within the research group and in collaboration. Engagement in the preparation of scientific publications is expected. The postdoctoral position is for lab (experimental) based research and the postdoctoral fellow will be working with Dr. Amit Kumar in the research group of Associate Professor Taher Darreh-Shori. The research group has a multidisciplinary approach ranging from basic to translational aspects using a diverse battery of methodologies. We aim to explore the complex pathophysiological features of neurodegenerative diseases, with a strong focus on Alzheimer’s disease (AD) but also other neurodegenerative disorders, to to gain a deeper understanding of disease pathogenesis/trajectory and to develop novel diagnostic markers and drug targets for early intervention in disease pathophysiology.

The Department of Global Public Health is a multidisciplinary department with the aim to advance knowledge about challenges and opportunities for public health in a local, national, and global setting. Research at the department is focused on how different societal and individual factors affect population health, and to develop and evaluate structural and individual-oriented interventions. Many researchers at the department are scientific advisors to authorities and other decision makers at regional, national, and international levels. The department has 12 research groups, about 110 PhD students and about 140 employees.

The successful candidate should show a high level of responsibility and independency, be able to collaborate with others in a team, good communication skills (English speaking and writing), and be willing to supervise students. Successful candidates should have a strong neuroscience background with documented experience in electrophysiology and/or imaging. Experience in surgery, animal behavior, computer programming, and manuscript writing are highly advantageous. The project will involve ex vivo patch-clamp recordings and optogenetics in the mouse basal ganglia.

We are recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to work independently on a project in our creative environment. Your project will aim to understand how proteins associated with type 2 diabetes and/or cardiovascular disease regulate human white adipocyte function. This will entail a number of state-of-the-art approaches ranging from handling clinical samples, advanced cell biology work, functional studies of fat cells and bioinformatic analyses.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a PhD in biomedicine or related area. We expect the candidate to have a detailed understanding of heart physiology and pathology on the cellular and organ level. Relevant expertise in molecular biology techniques (genomic DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR) and a broad scale of immunological and imaging techniques (immunocyto- and -histochemistry, confocal microscopy) is an absolute requirement.

The research at our lab The Reproductive Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology aims to yield new key information on the pathophysiology of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is linked to multiple severe health consequences, including reproductive, metabolic, and psychiatric disorders. The research is translational, and in collaboration with others, we combine register-based, cross-sectional, and longitudinal clinical studies with different mice models. 

In this position, you will play a leading role in our recently launched study investigating lung involvement in post-COVID patients. As the bioinformatics lead, you will implement computational quality control and analysis pipelines for various types of omics data from clinical samples from the lung, and assist wet lab-oriented post-docs and PhD students in bioinformatics analysis and data visualization of our ongoing research projects on molecular characterization at the mRNA, miRNA, proteome and metabolome level from multiple lung compartments. Our research group has a long standing interest in integration of multi-modal data, in which you will also receive training from a senior colleague. This part of the work is expandible, with support in writing own grants and developing into an independent research group leader if the successful candidate is interested in this type of carrier path.

The main focus of the position will be on our recently launched HemCOV study, investigation clinical and molecular features of post-COVID with lung involvement. At the core of the study is our in-house developed eHealth tool for home monitoring, home spirometry, as well as sampling from the lung. You will be an essential part of the core team in this study, being involved from the start. A large proportion of our research efforts are also dedicated to our unique LUNAPRE cohort (www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02923648), consisting of very prematurely born individuals with or without bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in the neonatal period that have been followed since birth. The overall goals of the project involve molecular sub-phenotyping and mechanistic investigations of the obstructive lung disease in this heterogeneous, relatively unknown, and rapidly growing patient group.

The successful applicant will work on the development and application of statistical methodology for evaluating mammography screening and studying breast cancer tumour progression. The project will include analyses of data from large, detailed studies of breast cancer and mammography screening. There will be opportunities to collaborate with other academic statisticians and researchers in cancer epidemiology. The successful applicant will also be encouraged to participate in international collaborations and in a computational statistics project as part of a cross-university collaboration within an e-science program.

The Mjösberg group studies the development, regulation and function of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), in humans, and how these cells contribute to pathology in mucosal organs such as the lung and gut. The studies are translational as they involve advanced basic molecular and cellular immunological investigations of precious human tissue samples to discover novel disease mechanisms, therapy targets and improved strategies for personalized treatment. The Mjösberg group consists of two team leaders, two PhD students, five postdocs and a lab manager working closely together with clinical partners at several Swedish hospitals and laboratory facilities at Science for Life Laboratories (SciLifeLab), Karolinska Institutet and abroad.

The Division of Molecular Metabolism, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics is located at the newly built and modern laboratory Biomedicum at Solna campus of Karolinska Institutet. Our research encompasses biochemical and genetic studies of patients with diseases as well as basic scientific approaches to understand the regulation of mitochondrial metabolism. Patient material (tissues and cells), genetically modified fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) and mice (Mus musculus) are used in our studies. We offer an outstanding research environment and a close interaction between basic science and clinical science and diagnostics at the Centre for Inherited Metabolic Diseases (CMMS) at Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. You will be part of the team to design novel experiments, independently process and analyse data obtained from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). You will be responsible for analysing brain imaging data and to conduct the statistical analyses to test hypotheses of interest. You will have access to previously collected cohorts, and you will be involved in the collection of completely new data. Your task will also be to write papers for scientific publishing, and you are expected to be first/corresponding author.
