The Neuroimmunology group at the LCSB led by Prof. Michael Heneka, has started its activities at LCSB in early 2022. It focuses on the role of immune mechanisms in neurodegenerative diseases, with a particular focus on Alzheimer’s disease. Michael Heneka has recently received a PEARL grant from the Fonds National de la Recherche in Luxembourg and has an immediate opening for a motivated, talented and experienced Postdoctoral researcher. The MINIALZ PEARL project aims to study the interaction of immune cells and neurons in the brain and to identify molecular mechanisms that can be harnessed for developing preventive, disease-modifying or acute therapeutic measures. MINIALZ will further identify early immune function and biomarker traits, in order to support diagnosis prior to clinical appearance. MINIALZ will be based on a new mechanism recently identified by the applicant’s group, by which microglia form a tunnelling nanotube network (TNTs) with neighboring neurons in order to free the latter from pathological proteins and ensure their function and survival. Preliminary data suggest that such microglia-neuron TNTs may contribute to neuronal survival in models of neurodegeneration

A postdoctoral position is available in the APSIA research group (led by Prof. Peter Y. A. Ryan) in the Department of computer Science at the University of Luxembourg. The successful candidate is expected to do research in line with ‘’quantum safe proofs’’ (QSP) project funded by Luxembourg National Research Fund. The successful candidate will conduct the QSP project in collaboration with Prof. Peter Y. A. Ryan, Prof. Anne Broadbent (University of Ottawa, Canada) and Dr. Ehsan Ebrahimi (PI, University of Luxemburg).

The postdoc will be a member of the Department of Physics and Materials Science within the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine at the University of Luxembourg. She or he will perform research under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Siebentritt.

The project is a comprehensive research framework study that aims at addressing key unanswered questions related to COVID-19, focusing specifically on the long-term health impact of COVID-19. SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with alterations of the human gut microbiome composition that persists for at least six months after the initial infection. An imbalance in the gut microbiome can be linked to disease severity and an increased post-COVID-19 risk. Transfer of microorganisms from the oral and nasal cavities to the gut represent a direct link between the environment-exposed oral cavity and the indirectly exposed gut. In particular, Postdoctoral researcher will work on resolving alterations of the oral, nasal and gut microbiomes in relation to COVID-19 and long COVID, as well as analysing the association between emerging and existing COVID-19 variants along with other pathogens and alterations of the microbiome on breakthrough infections and re-infections.

The successful candidate will become a member of the Luxembourg team of the “Health Behaviour in School-aged Children – HBSC” network (www.hbsc.lu). The HBSC network is an international cooperation of researchers that collaborate on the cross-national survey of school-aged children (www.hbsc.org). HBSC collects survey data every four years on adolescents’ health and well-being, social environments and health behaviours. The aim of the project is to understand young people’s health in their social context. The data collected is analysed both at the national level and at the international level.

The successful candidates are expected to perform the following tasks:

• Analyzing and investigating novel scenarios and use cases where the application of Machine Learning can bring some benefit.
• Developing novel ML-based solutions able to provide a good performance-complexity trade-off for the identified scenarios and use cases.
• Compare with conventional non-ML solutions and verify the benefits provided by ML in terms of trade-off between complexity and performance.
• Implementing and developing a software and/or hardware testing environment to compare and evaluate the proposed techniques.
• Disseminating results through scientific publications and conferences
• Contribute to the different research projects, either coordinating technical contribution and/or preparing project deliverables
• Preparing new research proposals to attract industrial, national and European projects
• Eventually providing assistance in the supervision of PhD students

You will conduct research in the scope of the CANDI project, joint project of the University of Luxembourg, EURECOM, and LIST. The objective of CANDI (Cellular Ad hoc Networking for Decentralized IoT Architectures) is to develop the foundations of cellular ad hoc networking as a support for next generation distributed applications that require direct communication between devices in proximity of each other over multiple hops. Examples of such applications are public safety (i.e., disaster scenarios when the cellular infrastructure is unavailable), railway virtual coupling (i.e., platoons of trains), smart factories and farming, and others. To achieve this, the CANDI project will leverage wireless ad hoc networking concepts with recent 5G cellular innovations proposing multi-hop device-to-device communications. It will investigate cooperative resource allocation mechanisms, as well as joint relaying & scheduling approaches to enable multi-hop communication for next-generation decentralized cellular networks. 

The candidate will contribute to practice-led FinTech and digital financial services assessment research, such as the assessment of financial inclusion and automatization of investment fund setups. The candidate’s research will focus on software testing, software fairness and generally the assessment of learning-based systems.

The candidate will contribute to the Software Testing and Automation research agenda of Serval. The candidate’s research will focus on software testing, code analysis and more generally on the engineering of TrustWorthy systems.

The SigCom research group works across the entire spectrum of blue-sky research and applied research to conceive and demonstrate future communication paradigms. Researchers with an interest in terrestrial and non-terrestrial communication systems, will find a large and vibrant team of over 70 members fostering a collaborative atmosphere. The applicant will investigate how to electrodeposit metal precursor structures in patterned arrays to later be converted into inorganic semiconductors for semi-transparent and micro-concentrator solar cells. The structuring will be realised using magnetorheological electrolytes (MRE) consisting of masking and active species. The main work is to understand how to electrodeposit arrays of uniform metallic precursor thin films from both aqueous and ionic liquid MRE using a custom-built deposition chamber. Afterwards, the structure property relationships between the deposits and the semiconductor / solar cells will be investigated. The MRE and magnetic field controller will be provided by the REMAP consortium. The project will involve significant international collaboration.

The postdoctoral researcher position is in the Horizon Europe project PATHS2INCLUDE “European Labour Markets Under Pressure – New Knowledge on Pathways to Include Persons in Vulnerable Situations”. The main tasks will be to identify data sources for cross-country comparison and to conduct analyses to explore determinants of employability and employment status with a specific focus on vulnerable people and the role of digitalization and automation. The successful applicant will be affiliated with the Institute for Teaching and Learning situated within the Department of Education and Social Work (DESW). The postdoctoral researcher will work in a team in the area of physical education lead by Dr. Claude Scheuer on subjects such as active school settings, primary physical education teacher education and inclusive primary physical education. This Postdoc position can be extended up to five years; initial employment is foreseen for 24 months. We therefore seek an individual with the will and ability to develop and establish his/her own research activity in the field of magnetic neutron scattering on magnetic materials. Suggestions for a possible research topic should be outlined in a two-page research statement (to be included in the application documents). Topics different from the above mentioned ones (e.g., Weyl physics and topological spin structures) are explicitly welcomed.

The successful candidate will primarily contribute to the large EU research project Lux4QCI – Luxembourg Experimental Network for Quantum Communication Infrastructure). The project is part of the Digital Europe Program (DIGITAL) and aims to deliver the first experimental quantum communication infrastructure (QCI) network in Luxembourg. A distinctive feature is the by-design integration between the terrestrial and the satellite segment. Lux4QCI envisions making Luxembourg a QCI front-runner and a hub for secure key distribution across the EU. To achieve those goals, Lux4QCI will identify use cases of interest for application scenarios of quantum key-distribution (QKD)-enhanced secure communications. The intended QCI will be nationally deployed through multiple terrestrial optical fibres running hundreds of kilometers and interconnecting at least 5 points of presence. The network will rely on a hybrid configuration combining multiple QKD technologies over a range of multihop topologies (e.g. star, serial, and tree). The intended architecture contains an orchestrator collocated with a node. The orchestrator consists of a network manager with SDN/network-function virtualisation (NFV) algorithms for flow management/routing, a quantum key-distribution network (QKDN) controller, which performs routing control of key relay, and a QKDN manager, which monitors the status of the QKDN and assists the key management system (KMS) for key-management operations.

The successful candidate will contribute to new control solutions for satellites and space systems with a main focus on a national research project in collaboration with LuxSpace Sàrl (https://www.luxspace.lu/), a member of the network of OHB companies. This project aims at the development of novel sensing and control approaches to enable a higher degree of autonomy for microsatellites in constellations and for the distributed control of autonomous formation flight of microsatellites. Together with LuxSpace, the research results will be implemented in a development tool and tested using suitable multi-satellite test scenarios. In addition, the candidate will also be involved in other research projects related to the control of spacecraft and space robots.
