(09) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate

This post is full-time (35 hours per week) and fixed term for 12 months (with a possible extension by another 12 months)

The School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh invites applications for a post-doctoral Research Associate position in machine learning and physical simulation to work on a project that aims to enable Language Models (such as ChatGPT) to reason about physical systems.

Current generative models for language are unable to reason about physical systems. For example, imagine querying a Large Language Model (LLM) about the expected behaviour of balls on a billiards table. Even if the system is fully specified (positions and colours of balls on the table, their physical parameters, etc.), current models cannot answer questions such as “Can the pink ball be pocketed by the white ball without hitting the red ball?”. To elicit the correct answer along with reasoning from an LLM for this deceptively simple prompt involves tedious engineering of the context. This project aims to develop an automatic method to enable inference of physical parameters and wider reasoning about physical systems.

(12) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate

The goal of this project is to develop new approaches for visual reasoning that are grounded in learned general-purpose 3D aware representations. This will involve advancing our understanding of the state-of-the-art in 3D aware representation learning and developing new methods for introducing 3D priors into visual representation learning algorithms.

There is a large body of existing work that attempts to learn 3D informed representations by using explicit 3D supervision during training, e.g., from depth, point clouds, or meshes. However, it is not feasible to collect this type of 3D supervision at scale. As a result, it is desirable to be able to train 3D aware models from image supervision alone. Existing work, on specific tasks, has shown that shape related information can aid semantic tasks. However, it remains unexplored how effective shape information can be for more challenging visual tasks such as few-shot learning, fine-grained image analysis, concept discovery, domain adaptation, and robust representation learning. The resulting methodology developed as part of this project will be applicable to a diverse range of applications including automated perception, robotics, and content generation. The learned representations will enable enhanced visual reasoning about properties such as occlusions, spatial relationships, and offer the potential to serve as a building block to enhance other complex tasks (e.g., in vision-language reasoning).

The postdoctoral researcher will be supervised by Dr. Oisin Mac Aodha, Dr. Hakan Bilen, and Dr. Changjian Li and will join the Computer Vision group in the School of Informatics (https://groups.inf.ed.ac.uk/vision ). They will also be a member of the Edinburgh Laboratory for Integrated Artificial Intelligence  (https://web.inf.ed.ac.uk/eliai) run by Prof. Mirella Lapata and Prof. Chris Williams. There are many collaborative opportunities, both within the Vision group as well as across the School of Informatics (which includes faculty working on machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, speech processing, and social computing).

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate for Engineering Biology for Biologic Drug Production

Biologic drugs are a rapidly expanding area of the pharma industry and the market is expected to reach over $620B in the next 10 years so there is huge future potential for scientists skilled in this area.CHO cells are the most widely used industrial system for producing recombinant therapeutic proteins, but can struggle to express some protein-based therapeutics at high quality and sustained high levels. We will address these issues with a systematic programme of engineering biology and genome engineering that combines innovative approaches to concomitantly increase CHO cells’ capacities to express and secrete important industrially relevant biologics. The research will take full advantage of state of the art facilities including the Edinburgh Genome Foundry (https://www.ed.ac.uk/biology/research/facilities/edinburgh-genome-foundry). There will be multiple opportunities to interact with leading academics and our industrial partners Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies.

The post works with the Chair of Synthetic Biology and Lead Applicant Prof Susan Rosser and is responsible for the planning, coordination, implementation, execution, and project managing of the project goals.

This project is part of an £8.7M EPSRC Prosperity Partnership between Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies UK and the Universities of Edinburgh, Manchester and York (https://www.ed.ac.uk/biology/news-events/news-2021/8-7m-collaboration-modern-medicines). These methods will be applied to a variety of sprays emitted from enlarged transparent, as well as real sized nozzles (100’s of microns). Primary break up will be studied for a wide range of Reynolds, Weber and Cavitation number, and serve as relevance to a variety of spray applications (e.g., agricultural, medical, or combustion).

We are hiring a PDRA with experience with laser diagnostics in sprays. Candidates with experience using optical flow (or similar), combined with experimental fluid mechanics will also be considered. Candidates without experience with laser diagnostics will not be considered. Strong candidates will exhibit the ability to learn new diagnostics and image processing methods (e.g., wOF) and apply them to optically dense sprays.
