PhD position summary/title: PhD Scholarship in mathematical modelling, simulation, control and optimization (advanced process control and model predictive control) for the electrification of industrial processes using renewable energy sources – DTU Compute
In this PhD project you develop new methods and algorithms for advanced process control and model predictive control for industrial processes with zero climate gas emission and based on renewable electrical energy. This will give you the opportunity to participate in pioneering research activities developing control systems for novel large-scale industrial processes. To eliminate climate gas emission from industrial processes such as fuel, chemical and cement production, these manufacturing processes, and their operation must be redesigned such that they can utilize electricity from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. The operation of such processes with significant intermittent power production and with storage systems requires new advances control systems based on forecasting and optimization that can efficiently and robustly coordinate the power production, storage, and consumption. Also, the operation of the industrial processes consuming electrical power must be redesigned such that it operates in coordination with the power system. The industrial electrical consumption processes that we consider in the projects include water electrolysis, air separation, ammonia production, and methanol production as well as thermal storage in combination with novel processes for cement production. You will develop mathematical models for these systems, simulate them using high-performance scientific computing, and develop online control and optimization systems that you will simulate in closed loop. You will also test the resulting systems in pilot plants and industrial plants with our industrial partners. In the project we develop new advanced process control systems and model predictive controllers for electrification of industrial processes. Novel numerical methods and modelling and real-time control systems will be developed to facilitate operation of electrified industrial processes. We test these systems by simulation using mathematical models and simulators that we develop in the projects. We also test the advanced process control systems and model predictive controllers for real plants in collaboration with our industrial partners.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in eco-friendly fabrication of solid oxide electrolysis cells – DTU Energy
The Department of Energy Conversion and Storage, Technical University of Denmark (DTU), invites applications for a PhD scholarship in the development of eco-friendly ceramic processing route for the fabrication of solid oxide electrolysis cells. The position is part of an EU project “PilotSOEL” that targets improving SOEC technology in general. The project is funded by Clean Hydrogen Partnership and more information can be found at https://pilotsoel.dtu.dk/. Transforming our society to rely only on sustainable energy sources is a formidable engineering challenge. Key to success will be the development of cost competitive and reliable methods to produce hydrogen via electrolysis of water/steam driven by green electricity. The hydrogen can be used as a fuel in itself or serve as a reactant for the production of fuels like methanol, kerosene or even ammonia. Large scale and fast deployment of electrolysers is highly needed for the displacement of conventional fossil fuels. Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC) is one of several different electrolysis technologies, which holds merit in terms of high efficiency and potential to reach low cost. For SOEC to be cost competitive to other technologies, mass production of all components including cells, interconnector (IC) plates, coatings and balance-of-plant (BoP) components is required. The manufacturing processes not only must be up-scaled and modified to reduce subsequent hydrogen production cost, but also needs to be with low environmental impact. In this endeavor SOEL production processes using only water as solvent in preparation of slurries and inks and waste material recycling are crucial.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship: Focused Simulations of Electronic Structure in Composite Phases – DTU Chemistry
A 3-year PhD scholarship concerned with the use of decomposed mean-field theory for accelerating chemical simulations of light-matter interactions in condensed phases is available at DTU Chemistry under the supervision of Associate Professor Janus Juul Eriksen. The position is available from 01 November 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter. The project will be carried out in the close collaboration with Associate Professor Filippo Lipparini from the University of Pisa, Italy. In the FESCOP project – funded for a 4-year period under the Sapere Aude program from the Independent Research Fund Denmark – we will work towards devising new computational protocols for substantially reducing existing requirements with respect to the extent of simulation clusters in condensed phases. In gas phase, only the electronic structure of a molecule itself becomes distorted whenever incoming radiation promotes transitions between electronic ground and excited states. However, in a structured environment like a solution or a protein, this distortion will become delocalized amongst the constituents of the surrounding medium as well, resulting in a need for extended clusters when sampling transition properties to assure proper computational convergence. By decomposing the total perturbation into focused, local contributions on a central moiety and its closest spatial environment alone, the remainder of the supersystem may be effectively filtered away and faster convergence achieved as a result

PhD position summary/title: PhD project: Develop and Test an Impact Assessment Methodology for Green Shipping Corridors – DTU Management
Are you considering an academic career and seeking to engage in the transition of the shipping industry, one of the hard-to-decarbonize sectors of world economy? At DTU Management, you can do both. You can develop your academic competencies while breaking new ground in developing a comprehensive methodology for assessing the implications of establishing green maritime transport corridors, a recently introduced concept aiming at accelerating investments in alternative fuels, ships and the relevant port infrastructure. You will be employed under the IMAGES (Impact assessment of green shipping corridors) project funded by the Danish Maritime Fund and Orients Fund. In addition to developing a proper assessment methodology, the project aims at testing it on a green corridor of Danish interest. Extensive work on green corridors is already underway, but due to the infancy of the concept, this mainly concentrates on identifying potential corridors. There is a need for a more holistic method to assess the far-reaching effects of green corridors and include the stakeholders’ perspectives. You will contribute to meeting this need and thereby support the further development of the green corridor concept, which is seen by the maritime sector as a necessary facilitator for kick-starting the green transformation. The position is in the Operations and Supply Chain Management section in the Management Science division at DTU Management. By joining the section, you will become part of a group that uses quantitative methods such as simulation theory, mathematical optimization, and information technology to develop methods for efficient and sustainable use of resources. We have a special focus on digitalization, analytics, and Industry 4.0 to further strengthen our efforts in applying quantitative and qualitative methods to improve decision support across the entire supply chain.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in solid state electrochemical TEM – DTU Energy
P2X is becoming a key technology in green energy infrastructures, and its core is electrolysis. The most efficient electrolysis technology is solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC), but the primary concern for implementing SOEC on a large scale is the loss of efficiency caused by cell degradation. The most detrimental degradation occurs as nano-structural changes in the Ni-containing electrode, but the mechanisms are not fully understood. The goal of the project is for the first time to map particle Ni rounding and wetting as function of temperature, gas composition, and applied electrical potential. The results will bring the SOEC technology ahead by determining thresholds for operating parameters where detrimental nanoscale degradation can be avoided.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Characterizing methane fed microbiomes for co-metabolism of trace organic chemicals in groundwater – DTU Sustain
Intense agricultural and farming activities lead to pollution of the environment via run-off of nutrients and other organic pollutants (e.g., pesticides) to different water bodies. High nutrient levels can lead to eutrophication and may reach levels that prevent water use for drinking purposes. The project will address the removal of nutrients and pesticides from groundwater taking advantage of methane already present in many groundwater streams. The project relies on the use of bioinformatics to characterize the methane fed microbiomes and provide input data for metagenome based metabolic models. These models are then used to optimize bioreactors to treat groundwater. The PhD will work with a team of interdisciplinary researchers as part of the project Metagenome-based Metabolic Modeling for Green transition of Water Treatment – application to Methanotrophy, granted by the Danish Research Council.
