(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: RE-ADVERTISEMENT: 2½-yr postdoc modelling large herbivore impacts on soil carbon in rewilded landscapes

This postdoc project will use soil and ecosystem models to predict decadal-centennial scale carbon pool development comparing different rewilding scenarios under predicted climate trajectories. The selected candidate will use data on greenhouse gas exchange, soil C stocks, and quantities and distributions of SOM in fractions of varying persistence from rewilding sites sampled by other WildSoil team members to parameterize and potentially modify one or more state-of-the-art soil models to simulate animals’ regulation of SOM mobilization, storage and persistence. Integrating this model into one or more ecosystem models modified to facilitate animal impacts, e.g. on vegetation carbon allocation, the candidate is expected to compare long-term ecosystem C stock trajectories between different rewilding scenarios, and to evaluate the resistance of stocks to future warmer and more extreme climates. The postdoc is expected to contribute ideas and concepts to the project and lead at least two high-quality papers in this research area. It is also expected that the postdoc contributes to the project’s public outreach and teaching, as well as collaborating with other team members, including students, sharing skills, and helping to solve problems in the postdoc’s area of expertise.  The host institution is a hub for zoogeochemistry and rewilding research with project partners in leading modelling environments in Europe and North America. This position would allow for a lot of flexibility to accommodate the life circumstances of the right candidate, provided that the candidate is prepared to spend a meaningful amount of time at the host institution and our partners.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Three-year postdoc position on macroalgal blue carbon in the Arctic

Marine vegetated ecosystems support carbon storage, so-called blue carbon, as well as multiple other ecosystem functions. The role of macroalgae for carbon cycling and storage is challenging to quantify because macroalgal detritus is exported by ocean currents to sinks beyond the habitats and documentation of the storage therefore requires fingerprinting methods to document the macroalgal origin. The project involves studying these fluxes from the coastal habitat, tracing macroalgae in Arctic marine sediments by e.g. eDNA and stable isotopes and evaluating the contribution of macroalgae to carbon storage.

The Post Doc is expected to contribute to analyses of field- and experimental information on macroalgal eDNA and decomposition in marine sediments, bioinformatic- and statistical analyses, and writing of scientific papers. The position also involves project management as well as contribution to further establish eDNA methods and developing mapping, monitoring and management strategies for Nordic/Arctic blue carbon habitats.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in infection neuroscience

Viral infections in the brain can have fatal outcomes if not controlled by the immune system. At the same time, the immune response can also cause both acute and long-term damage to the brain. Therefore, there is an increasing appreciation of the role of the immune system in acute infections, post-infectious brain conditions, and neurodegenerative diseases. Despite this interest, the mechanisms involved remain poorly understood. This project aims to uncover novel immunological mechanisms underpinning post-infectious brain conditions and neurodegenerative diseases.

(20) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: RE-ADVERTISEMENT: Two-year postdoc position in liquid tumor biopsy sequencing and prostate cancer (epi)genomics at MOMA, Department of Clinical Medicine, Aarhus University

The project concerns molecular prediction of prostate cancer aggressiveness and treatment response. This will be investigated primarily through analyses of epigenome, genome, and/or transcriptome sequencing data from liquid tumor biopsy samples (plasma/urine), e.g. shallow/deep WGS, targeted DNA sequencing, RNAseq, cfMeDIP-seq. The samples are collected from large patient cohorts with extensive clinical information.

The initial focus of the project will be epigenomic (DNA methylation) and genomic analyses (lpWGS and/or targeted deep sequencing) of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) from patients with advanced prostate cancer. Integration with other omics data types could be relevant in a later phase.

The work may also involve establishment of new methods for NGS-based epigenomic profiling of ctDNA (e.g. histone marks) and molecular profiling of other liquid tumor biopsy types (CTCs and EVs). If the applicant has experience in microbiome analyses, this aspect could also be included in the project. As our research focus is translational, all results from the molecular and bioinformatics analyses will be compared with relevant patient data, e.g. tumor stage/grade and survival.

(35) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Data Science in the area of statistical signal processing of greenhouse gas emission data from agriculture

The “green transition” motivates sustainable food production. Among the number of sustainability factors, the level of livestock-derived methane emissions is one of the key factors to drive the climate change. To ensure sustainability in relation to methane emissions from dairy cattle, continuous emissions monitoring and diverse emission mitigation strategies are of great interest. In this context, a sniffers-based gas emission measurement technique plays a crucial role. Unfortunately, the quality and reliability of acquired data from sniffers are of great concern due to the faults associated with the technique’s hardware and data pipeline. A number of factors and their interplay form a complex unpredictable system of emission variations leading to an embedded noise that is constantly appearing in sniffer-sourced records.

The aim of this position is to advance the sniffers technique to allow high-capacity and high-quality operations and results. In particular, develop and validate a fully automated pipeline, enabling effective monitoring and treatment of methane emission records from sniffers, with software modules performing equipment faults detection, data filtering and quality control, to provide condensed reliable phenotypes records ready for quantitative genetic analysis, breeding value estimation and design of emission mitigation strategies.
