The CUTES Research Group has a successful history in the nexus of urban transportation and environment/energy systems research and is involved in several large-scale interdisciplinary projects in economic/environmental impact assessment such as transportation emissions and air pollution/public health in New York City. Our research seeks to combine fundamental theoretical investigations with serious applications including the modeling and development of efficient systems for extracting and processing information. We aim at developing theoretical models, hybrid numerical approaches, computational algorithms, integrated software platforms, and ultimately policy insights and practical guidelines for managing the interactions among urban technologies, infrastructure and environment networks, and consumers and communities.

 The Li Lab is interested in elucidating complex plant natural product biosynthetic pathways and developing genetic circuits using synthetic biology in yeast and Nicotiana benthamiana. The lab uses a combination of synthetic biology, molecular biology, plant biochemistry, metabolic engineering, and multi-omics approaches. A Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Associate position is available in the Flyak laboratory in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Cornell University. A candidate will drive a fully funded antibody-discovery project.

At the Flyak lab at Cornell University, we study human antibody response to viral pathogens. We are currently focused on discovering the main principles of effective antibody response to the highly genetically diverse Hepatitis C virus – a leading cause of chronic liver disease and liver cancer. The candidate will use cross-disciplinary tools to dissect human antibody response to Hepatitis C virus. Working with other Flyak lab members, the candidate will also contribute to the structural characterization of isolated antibodies and the development of a prophylactic HCV vaccine. We seek a Postdoctoral Associate with experience in statistical modeling who is also interested in natural resource decision-making and species conservation. The successful candidate will use data products from eBird Status and Trends (https://science.ebird.org), combined with datasets from field surveys and remote sensing, to map Pinyon Jay distributions and investigate potential factors behind population change. The specific focus of the project will include (a) testing the association between eBird-based population trends and habitat conditions, and (b) exploring avenues for combining information sources from eBird with data from other monitoring programs. As such, the successful candidate will work closely with researchers both at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the USDA Forest Service to address information needs while gaining valuable experience working on a large-scale, multi-agency problem. Professor Patrick Reed’s Decision Analytics for Complex Systems research group within the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University seeks one or more postdoctoral associates.  The position(s) will initially be available for one year with a potential renewal for two or more years.

Candidates should have strong computational skills, ideally with a focus on water resources systems modeling at the river-basin scale. Experience with high-performance computing, uncertainty analysis, and coupled human-natural systems modeling is desirable. Additionally, emerging advancements in control and machine learning (e.g., deep reinforcement learning) are of interest but not required.  Ideally, candidates would have a Ph.D. in water resources engineering, hydrology, or a related field. The focus of this research will be on the risks, resilience, and sustainability of major regional water resources systems (e.g., the Mid-Atlantic, the Colorado River Basin, and the Central Valley, CA). The research will have a particular emphasis on understanding the implications of human responses to evolving climate extremes.

A postdoctoral position is available in the Fuller Spatial Ecology and Decision Science Lab https://blogs.cornell.edu/fullerlab/ with the New York Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment at Cornell University to evaluate the effects of harvest on fisher populations.

Historically, fishers were distributed across New York, but the species was nearly extirpated by the 1930s as a result of unregulated trapping. Populations have recovered in many areas, allowing for sustainable harvest opportunities in some parts of the state (e.g., parts of the Adirondacks and eastern New York). The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently opened new areas to fisher harvest in central New York with a conservative trapping season as a result of occupancy work in our lab suggesting that specific Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) may be able to support a harvest season. The postdoc will evaluate the effects of the conservative trapping season by comparing fisher density 3 years pre- versus 3 years post-trapping season regulation change (data from >600 sites using camera trapping and hair snares). In contrast to central New York, fishers in the northern zone of New York may be declining in several Adirondack Wildlife Management Units. The postdoc will develop a fisher population model and use a decision science approach to evaluate which harvest management scenario (e.g., variation in trapping season length, timing, bag limits) best achieves biological, social, and agency objectives. The research will provide decision-making guidance for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

The Postdoctoral Associate will conduct research on protein engineering, including bioconjugation chemistry, protein/enzyme engineering, expression, purification, and characterization to perform in human health, food, and agriculture applications.  The Postdoctoral Associate will utilize techniques such as: computational and experimental rational design, plasmid construction, analysis of Sanger and Whole Genome sequence data, transformation of vectors into expression systems, Western blot and other characterization methods of engineered proteins.  Projects include developing methods to genetically engineer bacteriophages and study their proteins and host interactions. The scientist will also design methods to immobilize enzymes and characterize their performance under conditions of intended use.  The scientist is also expected to write manuscripts for publications which detail the findings of the research. The Postdoctoral Associate will be expected to perform in a high-paced, creative, inclusive, and team-oriented research environment.

Migratory birds are important indicators of ecosystem health that connect peoples and places in ways few phenomena can. To understand and monitor migratory birds, their numbers, and their responses to global change, data and methods are urgently needed that can capture their movements at population scales. BirdFlow is an innovative, NSF-funded project that uses the Cornell Lab’s eBird database to infer the movements of migratory birds across the annual cycle. The Postdoctoral Associate will lead research that utilizes BirdFlow models to expand our knowledge of bird movements, including studying migratory connectivity and its associations with population trends, investigating species’ resilience to climate change and environmental fluctuations, and exploring BirdFlow models for providing real-time information on species’ movements in the context of the BirdCast public website. The postdoc will also work on integrating additional data sources, such as BirdCast radar data, individual tracking data and banding data, to improve and validate BirdFlow models. With the BirdFlow team, the postdoc will have an opportunity to contribute to products and software that will be released for scientists, conservation practitioners, industry, and the public to explore and investigate the phenomenon of avian migration. Specific research topics include:

• Calibrate, validate and apply BirdFlow models to investigate key open questions in migration biology, including the estimation of migratory connectivity for large numbers of species and its relationship with migrant population trends.
• Explore the usefulness of BirdFlow in providing near real-time information on migratory movements in the context of the BirdCast project (www.birdcast.info), including a comparison with radar-based estimates of migration.
• Develop and validate BirdFlow models that incorporate multiple data modalities (e.g. citizen science, radar, tracking, and banding) to estimate large-scale movements of migratory birds.

The research group of Dr. Ana Bento at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, seeks two skilled postdoctoral scholars to join our research team. Specializing in infectious disease eco-epidemiology and public health modeling, we study vaccine-preventable respiratory infections (e.g., SARS-CoV-2, influenza, pertussis) and climate sensitive expanding arboviral diseases (e.g., Dengue, Chikungunya, Oropouche, Zika).  Our research group is interested in the following topics: transmission dynamics of infectious diseases; impact of surveillance and public health interventions with an overarching goal of informing public health policy as well as local and regional capacity and outbreak preparedness; and one health approaches for anticipating viral emergence in hotspots of emerging infectious diseases. The successful candidate will combine mathematical models with classic and novel surveillance, serological and climate change data to examine the dynamics of infection and immunity for antigenically variable pathogens.

The Agroecology Postdoctoral Associate will join and contribute to a vibrant community of scholars across Cornell University, including faculty, researchers, visiting fellows, and graduate students who combine interdisciplinary interests in the everyday experiences of agroecology, political ecology of food systems, and critical climate change adaptation with disciplinary skills and interests from development studies, to ecology, to crop and soil sciences and science and technology studies, among other disciplines.

The successful candidate will work closely with Professor Bezner Kerr to advance several ongoing projects related to agroecology and rural development in Malawi, as well as develop new research projects on transdisciplinary agroecology and climate change adaptation in Africa. The Postdoctoral Associate will be integrated into Professor Bezner Kerr’s lab group on food, agroecology, climate change adaptation and social justice, including mentorship of graduate and undergraduate students in research methods. We seek to hire a postdoctoral associate as part of our U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)-funded project on carbon governance and digital agriculture. This is a one-year full time research position that is renewable for a second year, dependent on available work, funding, and performance.

The project aims to advance an interdisciplinary analysis of the implications of emerging technologies for Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) applied to GHG emissions reductions in agriculture. Developments in remote sensing, computer science and biogeochemistry support visions of cost-effective and reliable “natural climate solutions”. The Cornell University Action Research Collaborative (ARC) is seeking to hire a full-time research associate to work and manage on several projects across New York State. The mission of ARC is to develop and support equitable and sustainable research-practice-policy partnerships that can generate solutions to improve the lives of communities that are too often neglected. ARC approaches partnerships using multiple disciplinary perspectives and methodological approaches. Also, it is imperative that community partners are involved in all phases of projects (i.e., from study design to dissemination of findings). The overarching goal is for these projects to inform interventions and public policies that support the well-being of marginalized populations. The research associate will conduct and manage social scientific research projects on how structural, cultural, and political processes affect people’s experiences, as well as downstream outcomes in public policy and broader society. We are looking for a Postdoctoral Associate to join our interdisciplinary, NSF-funded project on deterring objectionable speech online. The project is a joint collaboration between the Department of Communication, the Department of Information Science, and the Cornell Social Media Lab and is funded by the National Science Foundation. The full-time Postdoctoral Associate will participate in research on the effectiveness of real-world interventions to deter objectionable speech. Additionally, the Postdoctoral Associate will design field experiments that encourage users to take effective and pro-social action when they see speech, such as harassment, hate speech, or misinformation, that they find inappropriate or objectionable.

We are especially interested in candidates with a track record of conducting experimental interventions and computational work in real-world social media contexts. Experience using generative AI in experiments is a plus, but not required. To date, our research team has developed substantial insights from observing objection dynamics in the real world and testing different intervention strategies in the simulated social media platform Truman. The next step is to try these, and other ideas, in the real world. The Postdoctoral Associate will be expected to lead the design and the implementation of these experiments informed by both their own insights as well as the team’s prior findings.

We are seeking highly motivated scientists to join the Diel Lab in the Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, Cornell University, as Post-doctoral Associate, working on projects focusing on characterizing viral immune responses, identifying, and characterizing protective viral antigens for subunit vaccine development. The Diel Lab has a diverse research portfolio with projects currently funded by USDA, APHIS, NPB and NIH (https://diellab.net/). The lab studies mechanisms underlying virus-host interactions, pathogenesis, immunity, and works on diagnostic assay development for emerging viral diseases at the human/animal interface.

This position will work primarily on the development of viral vaccines and development of novel vectored or nucleic acid-based platforms for vaccine development. This will involve design, construction, and characterization of recombinant viral vectors and their characterization in vitro and in vivo in immunogenicity/challenge studies in animal models. The candidate will help in the design, and will coordinate, and perform animal immunization challenge studies under BSL-2 and BSL-3 conditions and prepare manuscripts for high impact scientific journals.

The applicant should have a PhD in virology, possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, have a team oriented and collaborative mindset and have a strong desire to develop a career in the field of virology and viral pathogenesis. Prior training with flow cytometry, reverse genetics, antigen design and characterization and experience with laboratory or large animal models are assets.

The Research Associate sought for this position is a PhD-level scientist who will contribute to research in the Grodsky Lab, under the supervision of the Department Chair, Richard Stedman, focused on renewable energy ecology. The primary functions of the position are to conduct research in coordination with the PI on interaction among energy development, ecosystems, and people.  The Research Associate will supervise and implement a long-term research project on the ecology of solar energy development on abandoned agricultural lands in California and broadly assist in the research enterprise of the Grodsky Lab. Occasional travel to California to meet with collaborators and the research field will be necessary. This is a full-time, in-person position (40 hours/week). This is a three-year appointment, which is renewable upon satisfactory performance, work, and funding.

The Cornell Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy at Cornell University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate position. We seek an independent and highly motivated researcher with strong skills in quantitative social science research methods and knowledge of US health policy. The Associate will work closely with a team led by Dr. Sharon Tennyson at Cornell and Dr. Wendy Brunner at Bassett Research Institute on an NIMHD grant entitled “School Based Health Centers – An approach to address health disparities among rural youth”. This project will assess the impact of School Based Health Centers on healthcare utilization and outcomes and will examine how SBHCs may enhance rural community health by building individual, institutional, community and policy partnerships.

The responsibilities of this position involve designing and conducting research studies that meet the aims of our project, leading in data preparation, management and analysis, supporting graduate students and other personnel, and writing research manuscripts. The candidate will pursue established questions and will also have latitude to develop their own questions within the context of the project.

Successful candidates will have received a doctorate prior to starting the position. Candidates should have a scholarly record that displays a commitment to advancing research on health policy. Both have declined by 50% or more in recent decades, as cohesive monitoring programs have been lacking. The incumbent will lead the analysis of data from nascent passive acoustic monitoring efforts for both species to facilitate proactive habitat restoration efforts and other measures to help arrest or even reverse ongoing population declines.

To provide leadership for an active research group conducting research on pathogenesis, stress response, transmission as well as evolution, ecology, and population genetics of foodborne and zoonotic pathogens (including Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella) and spoilage organisms, including supervision of graduate students and technicians. The incumbent will be expected to develop and carry out a research program on applied food safety for multiple food commodities (e.g. produce, meat, dairy, etc.), molecular biology, pathogenesis, molecular epidemiology, evolution, stress response, and transmission of food and waterborne, zoonotic, and other bacterial pathogens and/or spoilage organisms.

Responsibilities will include conducting qualitative and quantitative research, including data analysis, dissemination and application of research findings, reporting of results and preparation of manuscripts, and developing research proposals for external funding. We are recruiting an experienced horticulturalist, plant scientist, bioinformatician, and/or biochemist to study the genetic and phenotypic diversity of hard cider apples and using bioinformatic, biochemical, and genomic approaches. The position is based in the Horticulture Section, School of Integrative Plant Science at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. The individual will study the unique quality attributes of hard cider apples and curate a database to manage and analyze phenotypic and genotypic data on cider germplasm collected over the past eight years. This position will work on a DOE-funded project entitled “Amazon vs Congo: Understanding the Intercontinental Differences of Tropical Rainforests’ Responses to Climate Variability” under the supervision of Professor Ying Sun. The responsibilities of this position include synthesizing in-situ field measurements from collaborators (site PIs) in the Amazon and Congo basins, conducting machine learning-based causal inference analysis on the response of climate variability of carbon fluxes for both site and regional scales, and incorporating a novel model of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and photosynthesis into the ELM-FATES model. This Postdoctoral Associate will collaborate closely with scientists from Harvard University and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, along with field scientists in Amazon and Congo basins.

 The postdoc will have the opportunity to leverage many years of bat viral spillover data collected in the field and the lab to examine mechanisms of
spillover and potential preventative actions. The ideal Postdoctoral Scientist will lead scientific data exploration and manuscript preparation, support a center grant application on
transdisciplinary investigations of spillovers, strengthen collaborations with international and on-campus partners, and contribute to the design and implementation of new studies to understand
the role of bats in spillovers. The postdoc will contribute to a collegial and collaborative lab dynamic.

The Cornell Center for Astrophysics and Planetary Science at Cornell University invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to work primarily with Prof. Drummond Fielding on theoretical studies of galaxy formation—specifically focusing on the topics of galactic winds, the circumgalactic medium, cosmic ray transport, and multiphase turbulence.

The position requires a PhD in astronomy, physics, or a closely related field. The initial appointment is for two years from the date of hire, with the possibility of renewal for further years contingent on funding and performance. The nominal start date will be August 1, 2025, but this is negotiable.

The Fuller Spatial Ecology and Decision Science Lab https://blogs.cornell.edu/fullerlab/ at the New York Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at Cornell University is seeking candidates for a postdoctoral associate position for a bat population monitoring project using mobile acoustic survey data. The project is in support of the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat), collaborating with partners from the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The project builds on a strong foundation of mobile acoustic work conducted by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), and other state agency partners, and will involve the analysis of mobile acoustic survey data from monitoring partners in the northeastern United States. The candidate will help meet partner needs by producing bat species status and trend reports, data visualizations, and data dashboards that readily communicate analytical results to a broad audience.

The candidate will work with state, federal, and non-governmental organizations on a regional analysis of mobile acoustic data, estimating abundance and trends of bats in the northeastern United States. They will collect acoustic data files and metadata from partners and evaluate methods used to classify acoustic data. The candidate will simulate mobile acoustic data to evaluate statistical power to detect trends in relative abundance through time, and to inform sampling design.

The candidate will be a participant in the Northeast Bat Working Group, NABat Community of Practice, NABat Mobile Transect Technical Working Group, and the NABat Analytical Working Group. The candidate will be expected to develop manuscripts for submission in peer-reviewed journals and communicate research to project PIs and partners. The postdoc will work closely with Angela Fuller, U.S. Geological Survey, NY Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, the NABat program, USGS Fort Collins Science Center (Dr. Brian Reichert and Bethany Straw), the National white-nose syndrome coordinators with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Drs. Jeremy Coleman and Jonathan Reichard), Carl Herzog (NYSDEC, retired), and NABat contributing data partners. The postdoctoral associate will be housed in the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York.

There will be opportunities to mentor and collaborate with graduate students in the lab. The position is full-time at 100% effort. The position will require occasional travel, including to the Fort Collins Science Center, Colorado as well as states in the eastern US; Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Vermont etc., with some likely updates to the locations based on timeframe and research.
