We are looking for a highly motivated postdoc with a strong bioinformatics background with great interest in using single cell tools to better understand the complexity of cell types in various conditions, their potential interactions, and biological impacts in a whole organ. The postdoc candidate’s main tasks will be establishing pipelines for analyzing gene expression data from single-cell RNA-sequencing (Smartseq3xpress and 10X), spatial transcriptomics, and other platforms including chromatin accessibility sequencing (ATAC-seq and multi-omics). The postdoc candidate will conduct the analysis of cell-type specific aging clock, GRNs, loss of gene-to-gene transcriptional coordination and transcriptome imbalance etc. to provide significant advances in the genetic regulation of the emergence and the senescence of complex organs in mammals. 

As a postdoc, you will conduct systems biology research in infection biology. You will spend most of your time on research activities. The role involves both independent work and teamwork, where you are expected to support and assist students and other researchers with your experience and knowledge in bioinformatics. You will receive expert guidance in viral biology and access to modern equipment to generate multicomic data on viral diseases.

We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious individual to join the research group of Professor Yenan Bryceson as a Postdoctoral Fellow to further elucidate the molecular regulation of human cytotoxic lymphocyte differentiation and harness insights for improved cellular immunotherapy of solid cancer. This project will be performed in close collaboration with the team of Associate Professor Isabelle Magalhaes.

Diabetes features a reduction in the number of functional β-cells, a key pathologic event that causes or exacerbates the dysregulation of blood glucose levels. Regenerating insulin-producing β-cells might prove a better treatment for diabetes, which is at present controlled but not reversed by insulin injections. Therefore, the main interest in the lab of Olov Andersson is to determine how small molecules and cellular mechanisms can promote regeneration of insulin-producing beta-cells and improve metabolic control, as potential curative approaches for diabetes. The successful applicant will use chemical-genetic screening techniques in zebrafish to identify compounds, genes and signalling pathways that can promote β-cell regeneration.

At the Teixeira lab (Ana Teixeira-group), we have developed DNA nanotechnology-based  approaches to map and target membrane protein nanodomains (e.g. Ambrosetti et al, Nat Nanotechnology, 2021; Fang et al, ACS Nano, 2021; Verheyen, Fang et al, Nucleic Acids Research, 2020; Shaw, Lundin, et al, Nat Methods 2014). In this project, the postdoctoral research fellow will investigate the nanoscale spatial organization of insulin receptors in different tissues. This information will be used to develop multivalent insulin variants using DNA- and protein-based self-assembly. The biodistribution and tissue specific effects of different multivalent insulin variants will be mapped in wild type and diabetes models in zebrafish and mice. This work aims to form the basis for the future development of insulin variants with tailored tissue targeting patterns.

Investigating DNA damage as a driver of adipocyte senescence and inflammation in obese, hyperinsulinemic individuals

Senescent cells, which can release factors that cause inflammation and dysfunction, increase in adipose tissue and associate with obesity and hyperinsulinemia. The proposed project will determine whether oxidative stress and DNA damage in human adipocytes drives adipocyte senescence, and the associated pro-inflammatory secretory profile. A small molecule approach to attenuate adipocyte DNA damage and reverse adipocyte senescence will be investigated.

While it is acknowledged that the brain is an important regulator of blood glycemia, a crucial role for the peripheral nervous system in the control of homeostasis is emerging. The pancreas is densely innervated by the somatosensory nervous system, but the anatomical organization and function of these circuits are not fully understood. We hypothesize that these networks are key components of an unexplored, peripheral regulatory unit controlling glucose homeostasis. Our objective is to identify and interrogate the somatosensory networks innervating the pancreas, in mice, with an interdisciplinary strategy, drawing methods from the fields of neuroscience and physiology. The postdoc will first map and interrogate the molecular architecture of these circuits. The postdoc will then use transgenic mice and a viral-based strategy to ablate pancreas-innervating somatosensory neurons during homeostasis (normoglycemic, lean mice) and disease (obese, diabetic mice), and assess changes in behavior, glucose metabolism, and gene expression of pancreatic tissue, in mice with an intact or ablated peripheral system. We anticipate that the results of this study will change our understanding of how glucose homeostasis is achieved and establish somatosensory neurons as a novel site for anti-diabetic therapy.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a PhD degree in cell- or molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, or toxicology. Experience with the following techniques is required: maintenance of primary cell cultures and transformed cell lines, confocal and light microscopy, flow cytometry, and other standard cell- and molecular biology techniques. In particular, previous experience of single-cell analysis techniques, e.g., single-cell RNA sequencing and single-cell mass cytometry, and the downstream analysis of such data, is considered an advantage, as is previous experience of working with nanomaterials. Excellent communication skills (English) and the ability and willingness to interact with other members of the group, and with external collaborators and core facilities, are both considered essential. The employment is temporary for two years.

At the Unit of Integrative Epidemiology we have a long-standing interest in deciphering environmental and genetic risk factors, disease prognosis, as well as effectiveness and tolerability of treatments for different neurological diseases, specifically amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), myasthenia gravis (MG), multiple sclerosis (MS). We do this by utilizing data from high-coverage national registers, large disease specific cohort- and case-control studies, and biobanks and in close collaboration with clinical researchers (e.g., the Department of Neurology at the Karolinska University Hospital). As a postdoctoral fellow, you are expected to take a leading role in the entire research process, from research planning and project administration, ethical application, data processing and analysis, to interpretation and dissemination of research findings. You are also expected to participate in the supervision of doctoral or master students and teaching.

The position involves research in computational neuroscience with a focus on cognition. In particular, you are going to build large-scale, recurrent computational network models (RNNs) and simulate relevant experimental paradigms. You are expected to analyse simulation data and perform quantitative as well as qualitative evaluation of the model’s compatibility with heterogeneous experimental data. The position also includes assembling and publication of scientific papers. The position is a full time employment for two years, with the possibility of extension.

We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious individual to join the research group of Professor Yenan Bryceson as a Postdoctoral Fellow to identify and mechanistically understand novel primary immunodeficiency diseases with susceptibility to viral infection, hyperinflammation, as well as cancer. Recent studies from our group on this subject include Campbell et al. J Exp Med 2022, Kalinichenko et al., Blood 2021, Holmes et al., Science Immunology 2021, Tesi et al., Blood 2017, and Schlums et al., Blood 2017.

The successful candidate is expected to conduct epidemiologic research in cancer epidemiology, focused primarily on childhood cancer, but also other areas within cancer epidemiology. We have ongoing projects, but there is also room for own research ideas, where the richness of data available offer immense possibilities. The postdoc is also expected to supervise PhD students, and to participate as teacher in epidemiology both at the Master level and at the Doctoral program in Epidemiology. The position is for 2 years with the possibility of extension.

The successful candidate will conduct the research with a special focus on deciphering molecular pathways mediating leukemic stem cell interaction with their niche under the supervision of the group leader (Dr. Hong Qian). In addition, the candidate is expected to participate in several collaborated project throughout her/his postdoc training. Our ambition is to discover innovative ways to stratify patients and to identify predictive and prognostic biomarkers by machine learning and AI. This postdoctoral position is focused on development and validation of methodologies for analysis and modelling of breast cancer histopathology image data together with clinical information. Machine learning and deep learning techniques are central in this computational pathology project aimed at improving phenotyping and patient stratification. The project is based on unique and large in-house datasets that include both image data together with clinical information and outcomes. The research group of Dr Claudia Kutter seeks a Postdoc (either computational or computational/experimental) in the field of functional genomics and RNA biology. The Kutter lab has a track record in deciphering molecular mechanism by which RNAs (i.e. long noncoding, transfer and small RNA) regulate genes and genome structure in mammalian somatic tissue and in the germline (Geng et al. Genome Research 2022, Søndergaard et al. Gut, 2022, Gao et al. Genome Research 2022, Atanasoai et al. bioRxiv 2021). As a Postdoc in the Kutter lab you will be part of a multidisciplinary and collaborative research team active within the fields of RNA and chromatin biology, functional genomics and regulative transcriptomics.

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled scientist with experience in drug development and testing of compounds for anti-cancer potential. Advanced skills in in vitro and in vivo testing of drugs as well as basic skills in molecular and cell biology and biochemistry are important assets for this project. The Mjösberg group studies the development, regulation and function of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) in humans, and how these cells contribute to pathology in mucosal organs such as the lung and gut. In this specific project, the postdoc will explore the lymphocyte landscape in bronchial biopsies of patients with severe asthma to identify ways of predicting and characterizing response to biologics therapy (read more here). The studies are translational as they involve advanced basic molecular and cellular immunological investigations of precious human tissue samples to discover novel disease mechanisms and therapy targets. The group is internationally recognized in the field through several high impact publications in recent years (Nat Immunol 2016, Cell Res 2021, Sci Imm 2022 etc).

The selected researcher will contribute to the understanding of the molecular and cellular processes underlying vascular and cardiac dysfunction in the context of obesity, diabetes and associated metabolic disease. A major part of the project will be to identify detrimental epigenetic/transcriptomic signatures eliciting oxidative and inflammatory changes. These objectives will be accomplished by a translational approach focused to characterizing cardiovascular phenotypes through novel technologies, genetically-engineered animal models and clinical studies. The candidate will work on experiments to decipher novel molecular networks, perform statistical analyses and writing reports or manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals. The candidate will be also engaged in teaching and supervising PhD and MD students, as well as in writing applications for funding. This is a temporary full-time position.

The failure to regenerate tissue with age is a major health issue. A contributor to this decline is the loss of stem cell function. Despite the essential role of stem cells, it is still unclear how they fail to maintain their functions during aging and disease. We discovered a new aspect of stem cell aging in vivo: cellular enlargement. With age and damage, stem cells increase in size causing their functional decline. However, we are only beginning to understand how size impacts stem cell fitness and the physiological importance of this process remains unsolved.

Our main research interest is to understand pathways governing development of systemic inflammatory diseases and lymphoma and the link between those two, since patients with autoimmune diseases run an increased risk of developing lymphoma and other cancers. We will investigate possible immune mechanisms and tumor properties governing cancer development in patients with autoimmunity, including dermatomyositis and systemic lupus erythematosus. In addition, we focus on cutaneous T cell lymphoma, which is a rare type of lymphoma primarily engaging the skin. The unique accessibility of this disease allows for easy access to the tumor and the possibility to follow the development of the lymphoma and anti-lymphoma immune responses over time. Most of the patients with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma get an indolent disease, but for largely unknown reasons around 10-15% percent develop aggressive disease with high fatality. In these efforts our ultimate aims are to increase fundamental knowledge on the pathogenesis of cutaneous lymphoma and cancer in autoimmunity and aid earlier identification of patients at risk of aggressive disease. 

As a postdoc in microbiome research, you will focus on analysis work concerning the role of the microbiome in several different projects all focusing on studying the microbiome and its interaction with the human host from a women’s health perspective. A central component of the role is to assume responsibility for bioinformatics analysis work in assigned studies, e.g. establish analysis plans combining microbiome data with additional metadata such as omics-data, questionnaires, etc. in order to perform the analysis work in collaboration with other colleagues at CTMR and external research partners with the ambition to generate new knowledge on the role of the microbiome for women’s health and scientific publications. The successful candidate will be working in close collaboration with several different teams within CTMR such as women’s health, bioinformatics, wet lab, as well as external collaborators outside of CTMR. Your main role will be to develop a computational pipeline to perform a broad range of multiscale computational analyses of potential disease-causing variants, focusing on a clinically curated benchmark of approximately 100 genes related to skeletal dysplasia. The main goal will be to develop new pathogenicity scores for variant classification including dynamical information from coarse-grained and atomistic simulations and potentially also protein-protein and protein-nucleic acid interactions. As a more senior member in a crossroad between two growing research groups, you will have the chance to play a bigger leadership role and mentor MSc and doctoral students, while also benefiting from direct supervision and collaboration from two PI, one who is experienced in structural computational biology and another who has a long clinical and research experience in rare genetic disorders and new gene discoveries. You will have the opportunity to work with significant freedom and independence within an extremely interdisciplinary as well as an international setting. This position is for two years.

As a Postdoctoral Researcher you will be involved in research on the identification of protein and RNA markers for the diagnosis and treatment of various cancers. These targets will then be used for the development of a delivery system to target diseased cells in vivo. Most of the research will be conducted utilizing proteomic and sequencing-based techniques. The first part will involve isolating EVs from patient biofluids, from which therapeutic targets will be identified. Following validation of these targets, a drug delivery system utilizing lipid nanoparticles targeted to the previously identified extracellular proteins will be developed. Successful candidate constructs will later be developed to target disease relevant targets in vivo.

The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC have about 40 research groups and our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.

You will develop and lead projects that aim to build novel phylogenetic models and methods, and also (optionally) work on the application of diffusion denoising models to new problems. You will contribute to various ongoing projects in the lab.

A postdoctoral position on sensorimotor integration and neural control of movement is available at the Department of Neuroscience. The project will have a particular focus on the integration of sensory feedback on movements in mice. This is a collaborative project between the labs of Abdel El Manira, Francois Lallemend and Laurence Picton and will involve multiple advanced techniques. The selected candidate will investigate the functional properties and connectivity of proprioceptive neurons and will explore proprioceptive feedback pathways in the brainstem and spinal cord. The project will involve the use of viral tracing, electrophysiology, optogenetics and behavioral analysis.

The research team of Assistant Professor Dr. Sylvain Peuget investigates how the bacterial microbiota participates in cancer initiation and progression. Metagenomics studies have highlighted dysregulation of the microbiota composition in cancer patients compared to healthy individuals. However, how bacteria influence cancer is still poorly understood. More specifically, we are interested in the molecular mechanisms which link bacterial dysbiosis, inflammation and alterations of the tumor suppressor p53 pathway, and ultimately cancer.
