Current funded projects include: assessing health and wellness and access to healthcare services with Indigenous seniors and Elders living in NT; maternal and infant health care and outcomes for Indigenous populations in NT; identifying the barriers to and opportunities for improving access to healthcare services for Indigenous populations in NT to inform culturally appropriate programming to improve patient experiences; capturing the anticipated and unanticipated consequences of COVID-19 preventive measures with Indigenous communities in NU and NT; working with NT Indigenous communities to understand the perspectives of community members toward HPV, HPV vaccination along with attitudes towards and experience with the COVID-19 vaccine; assessing side effects and experience of COVID-19 vaccination among NT and NU Indigenous communities; gathering culturally safe recommendations for increasing trust in public health prevention measures in northern Indigenous communities; and working with 25 NT and NU communities to explore community immunity from COVID-19 and COVID-19 vaccination as well as gather recommendations to support future pandemic preparedness in Arctic Canada. Dr. Suzette Brémault-Phillips (principal investigator) and the Heroes in Mind, Advocacy and Research Consortium (HiMARC), in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta, are looking to fill multiple Postdoctoral Fellow researcher positions, both full-time and part-time. A postdoctoral fellow position is immediately available in the laboratory of Dr. Qiumin Tan, in the Department of Cell Biology at the University of Alberta to study the role of Cajal-Retzius cells in brain development and function. We are especially interested in: (1) the developmental programmed cell death mechanism of Cajal-Retzius cells, (2) the functions of these cells in the adult brain, and (3) the communication of Cajal-Retzius cells with neural and non-neural cell types.

The Memory for Events (ME) Lab (PI: Dr. Peggy L. St. Jacques) at the University of Alberta invites applications for a fully funded postdoctoral researcher to lead cognitive neuroscience research investigating memory for real-world events. The postdoc will contribute to research examining the neural mechanisms by which people form and remember immersive memories for realistic events. Candidates excited about functional neuroimaging of memory for real-world events, the role of visual perspective in shaping mental models of events, and/or the use of state-of-the-art immersive virtual reality methodologies to study event memory are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will have a PhD in psychology and/or neuroscience, and a record of publishing fMRI research using advanced methods to study memory (e.g., MVPA, network analysis). One position for post-doctoral fellow is now open in S. Kar’s lab: Dr. S. Kar, affiliated with the Department of Medicine (Neurology), is a neuroscience researcher with vivid interest in Alzheimer disease pathogenesis. His research has been funded by federal organizations including Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). He is seeking one postdoctoral fellow with experience in neuronal culture and/or animal models of neurodegenerative diseases to work on a multidisciplinary project dedicated to establishing therapeutic potential of nanoparticles in the treatment of Alzheimer disease pathology. Candidates with experience in industrial robotics application to additive manufacturing processes will be preferred. Additive Design and Manufacturing Systems Laboratory has an immediate vacancy for a Postdoctoral fellow or a research associate in serial robotics and industrial automation. Candidates with experience in the Robot Operating System (ROS) or PLC based control of robotic arms will be preferred. This position will be open to candidates who possess an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Science, or a relevant discipline, and a Ph.D. in the area of serial robotics, advanced robotic manufacturing automation, or additive manufacturing. We have established efficient, AI-automated atom-defined fabrication procedures and have used those to show diverse classical and quantum phenomena can be controlled and probed in this way. This routine access to atom crafted structures provides a game-changing approach to the kind of physics long pursued through normal lithographic means in the study, for example of semiconductor quantum dots and qubits. Our atom-scale approach offers enormous advantages – such as the ability to make any number of identical structures, enormous splitting energies of 100s of meV rather than 100s of micro eV, and clear paths to CMOS integration. The postdoc will learn our procedures and apply those with our 2 state of the art multi-probe ultra high vacuum tools to exactingly fabricate, image at the atom scale and measure transport properties of proto quantum devices. Examples of planned devices include an atom-defined SET that is free of the stray charge limitations that plague other designs, and, a Pauli spin-blockade magnetometer that can be extremely portable and room temperature operable while requiring only electronic controls (no lasers as for NV center-based sensors).

The candidate will possess a solid track record of creativity in developing experimental strategies and a demonstrate applied knowledge of catalyst science, gasification, and separation technology. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in chemical engineering, demonstrated experience working with catalysis (zeolite chemistry), and experience in operating high- pressure tubular reactor and knowledge of online analytical quantification techniques. The Division of Gastroenterology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta, is offering a postdoctoral position in the area of digital platform based prehabilitation in individuals with chronic disease. The Postdoctoral Scholar will be supervised by Dr. Puneeta Tandon and Dr. Margaret McNeely. Redox control of Endoplasmic Reticulum – Mitochondria Contacts and their Relevance for Neurodegeneration

A postdoc position is available immediately to study calcium and redox signaling between the Endoplasmic Reticulum and Mitochondria in the Simmen laboratory (Department of Cell Biology, University of Alberta). The successful applicant will be studying the function of redox-sensitive ER proteins in this mechanism. These proteins localize to ER-mitochondria contact sites dependent on oxidation and reduction of cysteines. A special focus interest will be on the significance of this mechanism for the crosstalk between various CNS cell types, using co-culture approaches. The Climate, Health, and Environment Epidemiology Research (CHEER) Lab at the University of Alberta is seeking a full-time postdoctoral fellow (PDF) in the area of epidemiology, climate change, and environmental health. The successful applicant will work on various projects investigating the impacts of climate change, air pollution, and other environmental exposures on a variety of health and social outcomes. This fellowship will provide the opportunity to contribute and lead various projects in the field of environmental epidemiology while working with and learning from collaborators across various disciplines. The CHEER Lab is a highly interdisciplinary research group grounded in environmental epidemiology, with a research focus on climate change, air pollution, psychosocial health, and how these vary across traditionally underserved and higher risk populations. Our ongoing work often intersects with a variety of other fields and methods, including spatial analysis and health geography, biostatistics, surveillance, demography, and environmental science.  The PDF will work under the direct supervision of Dr. Shelby Yamamoto and be provided with a supportive and collaborative research environment to further hone research skills and expertise, develop and share new research ideas, apply critical and creative thinking to address relevant public health issues, and acquire new skills experiences as a researcher. The goal of the Principal Investigator’s program of research is to enhance knowledge about use of quality of life assessment and promote equitable person-centred care, in order to improve services for people living at home with chronic and life-limiting illnesses, particularly kidney failure. The postdoctoral fellowship – employee position will be funded by a 3-year grant. Depressive symptoms are very common among people receiving life-saving dialysis for kidney failure. But depression is rarely addressed or treated in dialysis care. One promising solution is cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which focuses on improving coping skills and changing negative thoughts and feelings. We know CBT is helpful and possible. But how does it work in dialysis care? Why does it help some, but not all people? Who benefits the most? The Department of Computing Science, and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), at the University of Alberta have an immediate opening for one postdoctoral fellow to work with Amii Fellow Professor Osmar Zaiane in the area of Artificial Intelligence research. Amii is one of three centers of excellence in the Pan-Canadian AI strategy. The postdoc position is to start as soon as a candidate is identified and will last for a period of two years subject to satisfactory performance.  The postdoctoral fellow will work on a research project related to Machine Malfunction Prediction and Machine Adaptation using Machine Learning. This project investigates effective means to automatically predict machine failures and strategies to adapt a malfunctioning machine to continue its mission before maintenance can be performed. The Animal Cognition Research Group (ACRG) in the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Science, at the University of Alberta is hiring a full-time postdoctoral researcher to lead behavioural/neural research examining how learning and cognitive abilities allow animals to solve problems they face in the wild (e.g., foraging, how to know what nest to build). Our work is currently focused on variation in cognitive abilities (e.g., sex differences in learning based on nest-building history, among-individual variation in cognitive abilities), social learning in foraging and nest building, and the trade-off between asocial and social information use. We are also looking to expand our work to include an invertebrate model system(s). The ACRG is funded by an NSERC Discovery Grant, the Faculty of Science, and a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) to the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Lauren Guillette. Our laboratory space includes free-flight colony rooms for zebra finches, extensive laboratory space for customizable behavioural testing, and a full histology and microscopy suite. We have laboratory space designated for team members to work/eat lunch which includes computer banks to download/stream videos from test rooms, general working space, projector, white-board, and team meetings. The Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute significantly to the successful conduct of multiple activities prioritized by the Scientific Office of the Provincial Seniors Health and Continuing Care. In consultation with the supervisor, the Postdoctoral Fellow will lead the design and implementation of knowledge synthesis and translation activities related to the strategic directions of the Integrated Provincial Team. he Black Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub’s Qualitative Study Project Manager will be responsible for supporting the operations of this Canada-wide Qualitative Study. They will provide project management for all operational activities to ensure that the research, engagement, and knowledge mobilization activities run efficiently. Specifically, the Project Manager will provide executive-level assistance in HR and finance matters, oversee research coordination, ensuring alignment of the project’s work plan, coordinate the Study’s virtual symposium, and contributing to the strategic planning of knowledge mobilization efforts.  The Project Manager will also be responsible for providing support and guidance to the Study’s focus group Lead Facilitators and Research Assistant’s operating out of six (6) BEKH regional hubs across the country. They will oversee coordination of data coding and analysis across all hubs and support the Study’s Principal Investigator as required.
