The MINIALZ PEARL project aims to study the interaction of immune cells and neurons in the brain and to identify molecular mechanisms that can be harnessed for developing preventive, disease-modifying or acute therapeutic measures. MINIALZ will further identify early immune function and biomarker traits, in order to support diagnosis prior to clinical appearance. MINIALZ will be based on a new mechanism recently identified by the applicant’s group, by which microglia form a tunnelling nanotube network (TNTs) with neighboring neurons in order to free the latter from pathological proteins and ensure their function and survival. Preliminary data suggest that such microglia-neuron TNTs may contribute to neuronal survival in models of neurodegeneration and the involved mechanisms are defective in microglia carrying disease-associated AD risk mutations.

The open position in part of a JPND project, funded by FNR. The project aims to enhance the outcome of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) in Parkinson’s disease (PD) through the individualization and optimization of stimulation settings. Our vision is to replace the current practice of selecting stimulation pulse width, amplitude, and frequency by trial and error with a model-based patient- specific calculation. This will be achieved by incorporating insights from novel clinical studies into individualized mathematical models underpinning clinically relevant DBS programming tools. The consortium is composed of neurologists, electrical and control engineers, computer scientists, movement scientists, and neurosurgeons from four European countries.

Successful candidates willjoin the Neuroinflammation group, led by Prof. Michael Heneka, which aims at understanding molecular mechanisms of inflammatory regulation in a variety of neurodegenerative diseases, using novel preclinical mouse models and state-of-the-art techniqueslike two-photon imaging, transcriptome analysis and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), to develop new biomarkers and medical intervention programs.

This is a fully funded postdoc position for 2 years within a large, national research project (INSTRUCT – INtegrated Satellite-TeRrestrial Systems for Ubiquitous Beyond 5G CommunicaTions). The project is run in close cooperation with SES (https://www.ses.com/). Therefore, the objectives of the postdoc are defined inaccordance to the INSTRUCT directions, and also aligned with the research interest of SES towards their next-generation of satellite systems. More precisely, the work aims at addressing the challenges of a seamless integration between 6G networks and multi-layered non-terrestrial systems.

The Metabolomics Platform is a mass spectrometry service facility within the LCSB. Its main goal is to offer analytical services to research groups at the LCSB and in Luxembourg. Our vision is to not only act as a measurement facility but to offer consulting in experimental design for metabolism related analyses to provide optimal results. It is also to provide and develop analytical methods to address a broad spectrum of biological questions. The unit comprises state-of-the-art instruments including LC-MS, IC-MS and GC-MS instruments (with Orbitrap, QQQ, QToF and QTRAP mass analyzers).

The candidate will contribute to the FNR CORE project “Give control back to users: personalised privacy-preserving data aggregation from heterogeneous social graphs” (HETERS). The project is within the Security and Trust of Software System (SaToSS) research group led by Prof. Sjouke Mauw. The purpose of the project is to aggregate and release heterogeneous social network data with the help of social network users while preserving their personalized privacy requirements. The successful candidate will conduct research with a focus on designing methods to synthesise heterogeneous social graphs with data that are privately collected and aggregated from volunteering users.

The C²DH has three job openings for post-doctoral researchers to work within the framework of an applied research project on the collection building / acquisition policyand provenance research in the collections of works of art and other cultural goods in three Luxembourg institutions: the National Museum of History and Art, the Villa Vauban – Musée d’Art de la Ville and the National Library of Luxembourg. The research project is part of a larger research convention between the C²DH and the Ministry of State on the study of spoliation of Jewish goods during the Second World War. Each post-doc position will focus on one cultural institution and realize his/her research in close collaboration with and support of the institution. The research during this first phase of the project will concentrate on the study of the collection building / acquisition policy at the different institutions during the period 1933-1945 and the realization of a scientific report suggesting further investigations.

The Postdoctoral researcher will be working under the supervision of Professor Mickaël Géraudel, within the Chair Entrepreneurship and Innovation. In particular, the Postdoctoral Researcher will be in charge of:

The research group focuses on wireless/satellite communications and networking and is headed by Prof. Symeon Chatzinotas. The research areas focus on the formulation, modeling, design, and analysis of future 5G and beyond communication networks that are capable of supporting new services in a cost-efficient manner. Use cases of interest include IoT verticals, unmanned aerial vehicles, integrated satellite-space-terrestrial networks, quantum communications and key distribution, spectrum management and coexistence, tactile Internet, and autonomous transportation. As far as technical enablers are concerned, we leverage expertise on massive MIMO cell-free communications, smart-radio environments through the use of intelligent surfaces, machine-type and ultra-reliable and low-latency communications, edge computing and caching, RAN slicing, and network softwarization and visualization. Finally, due to the large-scale nature, complexity, and heterogeneity of 5G and beyond networks, for their analysis and optimization, we use tools such as artificial intelligence/machine learning, graph theory and graph-signal processing, and convex/non-convex optimization. The successful candidate will primarily contribute to the large EU research project Lux4QCI Luxembourg Experimental Network for Quantum Communication Infrastructure). The project is part of the Digital Europe Program (DIGITAL) and aims to deliver the first experimental quantum communication infrastructure (QCI) network in Luxembourg. A distinctive feature is the by-design integration between the terrestrial and the satellite segment. Lux4QCI envisions making Luxembourg a QCI front-runner and a hub for secure key distribution across the EU. To achieve those goals, Lux4QCI will identify use cases of interest for application scenarios of quantum key-distribution (QKD)-enhanced secure communications. The intended QCI will be nationally deployed through multiple terrestrial optical fibers running hundreds of kilometers and interconnecting at least 5 points of presence. The network will rely on a hybrid configuration combining multiple QKD technologies over a range of multihop topologies (e.g., star, serial, and tree). The intended architecture contains an orchestrator collocated with a node. The orchestrator consists of a network manager with SDN/network-function virtualisation (NFV) algorithms for flow management/routing, a quantum key-distribution network (QKDN) controller, which performs routing control of key relay, and a QKDN manager, which monitors the status of the QKDN and assists the key management system (KMS) for key-management operations.

The postdoc will be a member of the Department of Physics and Materials Science within the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine at the University of Luxembourg. She or he will perform research under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Siebentritt.

The project is a comprehensive research framework study that aims at addressing key unanswered questions related to COVID-19, focusing specifically on the long-term health impact of COVID-19. SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with alterations of the human gut microbiome composition that persists for at least six months after the initial infection. An imbalance in the gut microbiome can be linked to disease severity and an increased post-COVID-19 risk. Transfer of microorganisms from the oral and nasal cavities to the gut represent a direct link between the environment-exposed oral cavity and the indirectly exposed gut. In particular, Postdoctoral researcher will work on resolving alterations of the oral, nasal and gut microbiomes in relation to COVID-19 and long COVID, as well as analysing the association between emerging and existing COVID-19 variants along with other pathogens and alterations of the microbiome on breakthrough infections and re-infections.
