The postdoctoral position is available for one year with a possibility of renewals for up to two years. The researcher will work on developing the research in the following projects (but not limited to) resulting in peer reviewed publications:

  • Integration of future energy systems into Canadian cities: This project examines strategic plans, policies, and/or projects undertaken by Canadian municipalities and neighbourhoods to assess how prepared are they to adapt to future energy systems.
  • Just energy transition: This project explores connections between energy production, public policy, and human and Indigenous rights of self-determination in Canada’s North. What are the sustainable ways and renewable sources of producing and supplying energy to Northern remote Indigenous communities?
  • Understanding risk communication in Alberta’s municipalities: The study intends to elicit ways to bolster natural hazard risk knowledge and its effective communication in Alberta’s municipalities.

The Animal Cognition Research Group (ACRG, https://animalcognitionualberta.weebly.com/) in the Department of Psychology at the University of Alberta is hiring a full-time postdoctoral researcher to lead behavioral/neural research examining how learning and cognitive abilities allow animals to solve problems they face in the wild (e.g., foraging, how to know what nest to build). Our work is currently focused on variation in cognitive abilities (e.g., sex differences in learning based on nest-building history, among-individual variation in cognitive abilities), social learning in foraging and nest building, and the trade-off between asocial and social information use. The experimental astroparticle physics group at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) is seeking an excellent postdoctoral fellow to join our exciting research program in the SNO+ experiment.

The SNO+ experiment aims to establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino by searching for neutrinoless double beta decay using tellurium in liquid scintillator. SNO+ is currently being filled with liquid scintillator, with the tellurium-loaded phase coming shortly after. The current state of the detector is a great opportunity to understand the optical properties of the scintillator and characterize its purity and background levels. The UofA SNO+ group is heavily involved in analysis of these data, as well as key pieces of calibration hardware and is also exploring potential detector upgrades, such as photodetection technologies and loading of the scintillator. The potential candidate is expected to join data analysis activities and actively engage in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students.

The university is considered a “Comprehensive academic and research university” (CARU), which means that it offers a range of academic and professional programs, which generally lead to undergraduate and graduate level credentials.

The university comprises four campuses in Edmonton, the Augustana Campus in Camrose, and a staff centre in downtown Calgary. The original north campus consists of 150 buildings covering 50 city blocks on the south rim of the North Saskatchewan River valley, directly across from downtown Edmonton. 39,000 students from Canada and 150 other countries participate in 400 programs in 18 faculties.

The University of Alberta is a major economic driver in Alberta. The university’s impact on the Alberta economy is an estimated $12.3 billion annually, or five per cent of the province’s gross domestic product.
