Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral Research Associate – Cryo-TEM of Beam-Sensitive Materials for Hydrogen Technologies

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on development and application of cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) techniques and the associated data analysis for high-resolution imaging of beam-sensitive fuel cell and electrolyzer materials at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The applicant will work closely with scientists both at ORNL and institutions within with the US Department of Energy’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO) laboratory consortia, which aim to improve the performance and durability of hydrogen fuel cell and electrolyzer materials. This position resides in the Materials MicroÅnalysis Group in the Nanomaterials Characterization Section, Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  The research will focus on advancing experimental and data analysis methods for cryo-TEM imaging of beam-sensitive fuel cell and electrolyzer materials, such as proton-conductive ionomer thin films, with the goal of revealing the native structure and morphology of these materials at high resolution. Independent and motivated candidates capable of generating novel ideas, planning, and executing appropriate experiments, and extracting meaningful results through innovative analysis methods are encouraged to apply. A successful candidate will have a strong demonstrated background in high-resolution TEM imaging and coding for associated data analysis. Experience with cryo-TEM, high-resolution imaging of beam-sensitive materials, and focal/tilt series-based phase reconstruction techniques are considered a plus.

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate – Experimentalist, Direct Air Capture of Carbon Dioxide

We are seeking a postdoctoral research associate who will support the Geochemistry and Interfacial Sciences Group in the Chemical Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The postdoctoral research associate will focus on carbonation reactions of MgO and reaction-induced fracturing. The position is funded by a new Department of Energy (DOE) Basic Energy Science (BES) project within the Material Science & Engineering portfolio called “Fundamental Mechanisms Driving Efficiency of CO2 Capture Using Mineral Looping” (FY23-FY26). The goal of this research project is to provide a fundamental understanding of the chemical reactions that govern the hydroxylation and carbonation of MgO, a potential material for direct air capture of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. (03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate- Vapor Phase Processing of Ultra-High Temperature Materials

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on developing processes to create ultra-high temperature refractory metals/ceramics (UHTMs/UHTCs) and ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials. The role will include process development and characterization of the microstructure and behavior of these high-purity vapor-phase processed refractory metals, ceramics, and composites. The candidate will team with ORNL’s world-class experts and have access to the state-of-the-art facilities. This position resides in the Surface Engineering and Tribology Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This position offers the opportunity to develop and refine skills in multiple areas critical to materials science, including chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) of advanced ceramic and composite materials, detailed elemental and microstructural analysis of materials using state-of-the-art equipment, and extreme environment testing. In addition, the postdoctoral research associate may be involved with other types of processing methods for UHTMs/UHTCs, such as colloidal processing, polymer impregnation pyrolysis (PIP), and reactive melt infiltration (RMI). We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on exploiting neutron and X-ray scattering for unique insights into catalyst structure and reaction mechanism. This position resides in the Surface Chemistry and Catalysis (SCC) GROUP in the Chemical Sciences Division (CSD), Physical Science Directorate (PSD), at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). As part of our team, you will conduct research with focus on utilizing neutron and X-ray scattering measurements of surface species relevant to catalytic reactions of CO2 and methane, and structure dynamics of catalysts under reaction conditions. This position is funded by a Department of Energy Basic Energy Science program – Fundamentals of Catalysis and Chemical Transformations – in SCC group at CSD. The SCC group conducts research into surface chemistry of complex oxides and metals supported on oxides and catalytic reactions of CO2 and methane conversions. Primary research interests are focused on mechanisms of hydrogenation and coupling reactions with the goal of understanding the fundamental properties of oxide surfaces and metal – oxide interfaces that control selectivity in these reactions. Approaches include experimental and computational studies of kinetics and reactivity, spectroscopic identification of surface species and chemistry under in situ and operando conditions, and synthesis of model catalysts as an approach to understanding structure-function relationships in catalysis. Arrays of techniques for characterizing physical and catalytic properties are in place or are currently being developed within the group. This research program also takes advantage of resources at ORNL in particular neutron scattering at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences, as well as X-ray synchrotron sources at user facilities. The environment at ORNL is highly collaborative and crosscutting research exists between the Chemical Sciences Division and other Divisions at ORNL.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on advanced electron microscopy research for energy storage materials. This position resides in the scanning transmission electron microscopy group in the Nanomaterials Characterization Section, Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), Physical Science Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). As part of our research team, you will investigate the atomic and electronic structures in materials and correlate them with relevant properties for battery applications. You will utilize ORNL’s new capabilities of cryogenic monochromatic and aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). A particular focus of the research will be to understand interfacial stability and conductivity in solid state battery materials and systems. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate with a strong background in synthesis and coordination chemistry to develop novel chelation platforms for s-, p-, and f-block metal ions of interest in nuclear medicine and clean energy applications. This position resides in the Chemical Separations Group in the Chemical Sciences Division (CSD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  As part of the Chemical Separations Group, you will have the opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary team comprising specialists in organic and polymer synthesis, coordination chemistry, thermodynamics, laser spectroscopy, materials characterization, chemical separations, computational chemistry, and nuclear chemistry. Our cold labs house state-of-the-art instruments including a triple-quad ICP mass spectrometer, single-crystal X-ray diffractometer, 2D-IR spectrometer, potentiometric titrators, and ultrafast laser systems.  Our radiochemistry facility boasts 6 hoods and 2 gloveboxes equipped for radiological work, and an array of radioanalytical instruments for the detection of alpha-, beta-, and gamma-emitting isotopes and quantification of radioactive complexes. The successful candidate will conduct research focused on the development of novel chelation strategies to selectively bind s-, p-, and f-block elements and the application of these ligands in targeted radionuclide therapy and chemical/radiochemical separations. You will assist principal investigators and lead projects as part of an expanding program. Your work will be focused on technical assistance and research related to improved energy management in existing buildings and industrial facilities during their operational phase. In addition, you will provide support to the U.S. DOE’s Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) programs. AMO is under the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). AMO’s Technology Partnerships subprogram presently works with some of the largest manufacturing plants in the United States through the DOE’s Better Buildings, Better Plants Program. This position resides in the Functional Hybrid Nanomaterials Group, Nanomaterials Synthesis Section, at the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), Physical Sciences Directorate, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). As a postdoc, you will work within a research team that is focused on understanding and controlling the growth mechanisms of nanomaterials, bridging length scales from the nanoscale to the macroscale, and you will interact with other groups at the CNMS toward advancing autonomous synthesis. Several methods are employed, including traditional approaches such as CVD, but also novel, nonequilibrium approaches for bottom-up and top-down growth and doping, such as pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and laser processing within optical microscopy environments or within the TEM, where control over the kinetic energy of precursor species or pulsed photolytic processes are used to synthesize and process nanomaterials with metastable phases or states that are predicted to have novel functionalities.  The novel materials synthesized in this project will be collaboratively shared with a wide variety of microscopists, ultrafast spectroscopists, device experts, and quantum information scientists to explore their functionalities across a wide spectrum of capabilities being developed at ORNL.

This Laboratory Directed Research and Development project will involve organic synthesis and the development of novel synthetic pathways, step-growth and/or ring-opening polymerization of the synthesized building blocks, and thermomechanical characterization of the resulting polymer materials. In this position, the postdoc will work as part of an interdisciplinary ‘Design-Build-Test-Learn’ team engineering enzymes for materials science goals.
