The main role of this position will be to lead the production of Health Evidence Reviews (HERs) at the request of government. We are seeking a Research Associate specialization in Agronomy. The purpose of the cereal agronomy research program is to generate knowledge and foster innovation to support the growth of Alberta’s cereal crop industry. The candidate’s primary role is to develop, coordinate, lead, execute and interpret research projects to generate high-quality scientific information for growers and the industry. The successful candidate will work with the Principle Investigator Dr. Guillermo Hernandez-Ramirez with the department of Renewable Resources within the Faculty of Agricultural Life and Environmental Sciences.  This scientific position contributes to lead and coordinate research programs on cereal agronomy at the provincial scale. This involves developing new research questions, writing research proposals, securing funding, implementing and coordinating research projects, data analysis and interpretation, modelling of cropping systems, developing management recommendations for Alberta farmers, and publication of research findings in peer-reviewed journals.  The incumbent will collaborate with government, applied research associations, university and private industry researchers provincially, nationally and international crop commissions and scientific organizations to develop agronomic advice for cereals in all of Alberta’s major agro-ecological environments. In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, this research associate appointment will be for 18 months from the start date with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding availability with an annual salary range of $74,084 – 101,888 per annum commensurate with education and qualifications.

The Research Associate is responsible for (scientific and operational) data oversight from the point where data collection is complete through to access of processed data by members of the research team and production of research outputs. The Research Associate will assist with other aspects of management of the project as required. This position will focus on the Alberta Workforce Resilience Study and support the ongoing TREC Measurement System (TMS). The TREC Measurement System (TMS) is an observational study in which data are collected across ~90 facilities from several thousand providers. TMS surveys are collected at approximately 18-month intervals, while data from residents is collected in annual and quarterly (RAI-MDS 2.0) assessments routinely captured in the nursing homes. The upcoming Alberta Workforce Resilience Study is an expanded wave of the longitudinal TMS observational study. It will run through 2025 and include an expanded cohort of LTC homes in Alberta. Survey data are captured in a variety of ways, the majority using structured face to face or virtual interviews with care aides, unit managers and facility administrators/directors of care and using online surveys with regulated providers (nurses, allied professionals, medical directors). Results are fed back to all levels at specified intervals and in a variety of formats (e.g., short information sessions with posters, provincial/regional policy summits, newsletters, etc.). A large contingent of interviewers are used to complete the structured personal interviews.

This position will design and conduct complex scientific research specifically to how tumor microenvironment promotes cancer progression and impairs immune function. A particular focus will be applied to applications of cellular immunotherapy such as target discovery, construct design, transduction efficiency and novel approaches to cytotoxicity. The incumbent will collect, analyze and interpret data relation to research and clinical translation as well as set research activity objectives in consultation with the principal investigator (PI).   This research scientist will write grant applications pertaining to the projects in the lab (CRS, CIHR, CCSRI, WCHRI).  They will also supervise trainees working within this research focus.   The candidate will invite guest speakers/collaborators and apply for funding for their visits.  They will also collaborate with private corporations in collaborative projects which can include securing contract research funding or provision of indirect assistance such as pure drug substance (Celgene, Bristol Myers Squibb, Gilead).  As part of the team, this position will participate in scientific oversight of the laboratory and assist the PI in supervision of students, technicians and other staff in the laboratory.  The candidate will also assist with teaching on occasion (Oncology at various levels) and assist in poster judging at local research days (CRINA, ImmuNET). 

This position involves working closely with clinician researchers and our laboratory technicians on the design of experiments, data analysis and interpretation, grant applications and publications specific to the gut microbiota, GI infections, pathobionts and antimicrobial resistance testing. The ideal candidate will have a passion for human biotherapies including FMT, the host-microbe interactions with C. difficile infection and experience in probiotics, parabiotics and postbiotics research in GI diseases, especially application of next-generation probiotic strains and their by-products as novel therapeutics.

We are looking for an individual with research experience broadly in the area of energy and environmental systems engineering. Individuals applying for this position should have an interest and some experience in integrated resource planning and modelling focused on energy demand and supply. We are developing environmental footprints (e.g., greenhouse gas emissions, $/tonne of CO₂) of energy demand and supply sectors for a particular jurisdiction. The individual should have some experience working with relevant energy forecasting and planning models (e.g., LEAP, MARKAL). The candidate is expected to carry out research on assigned project(s). We are looking for individuals with research experience broadly in the area of energy and environmental systems engineering with a focus on biomass. Individuals applying for this position should have an interest and research experience in modelling biomass-based energy conversion systems, specifically in the conversion of forest- and agriculture-based biomass or other organic waste to fuels and chemicals. The candidate should have experience developing techno-economic models for the estimation of the viability of these types of energy systems. The individual should also have some experience in modeling biomass conversion processes using relevant tools (e.g., Aspen Plus). The candidate is expected to carry out research on assigned project(s). The candidate will have an opportunity to develop and initiate new research activities in relevant areas and supervise junior researchers. The Indigenous and Global Health Research Group (IGHRG) led by Dr. Sangita Sharma, the Canada Research Chair in Population Health, Professor in Indigenous and Global Health Research Group in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta is currently accepting applications for postdoctoral positions with the team. The IGHRG is a multi-disciplinary research group of 25+ staff that was established by Dr. Sharma in 2010. Dr. Sharma and the team have an extensive international background working with over 22 populations in various countries worldwide but now primarily focus on working with Indigenous and/or ethnic minority populations in Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories (NT), and Nunavut (NU). Current funded projects include: assessing health and wellness and access to healthcare services with Indigenous seniors and Elders living in NT; maternal and infant health care and outcomes for Indigenous populations in NT; identifying the barriers to and opportunities for improving access to healthcare services for Indigenous populations in NT to inform culturally appropriate programming to improve patient experiences; capturing the anticipated and unanticipated consequences of COVID-19 preventive measures with Indigenous communities in NU and NT; working with NT Indigenous communities to understand the perspectives of community members toward HPV, HPV vaccination along with attitudes towards and experience with the COVID-19 vaccine; assessing side effects and experience of COVID-19 vaccination among NT and NU Indigenous communities; gathering culturally safe recommendations for increasing trust in public health prevention measures in northern Indigenous communities; and working with 25 NT and NU communities to explore community immunity from COVID-19 and COVID-19 vaccination as well as gather recommendations to support future pandemic preparedness in Arctic Canada. These projects offer exciting opportunities to contribute to the current dynamic health situation and toward improving the health and wellness of Indigenous communities in Canada.

The successful applicants will participate and lead research that applies advanced statistical, AI and ML techniques to large populational health data of patients with mental and substance use disorders. Current and potential projects include two main directions: 1) Individualized prediction of mental and substance use disorders and overdoses and associated health and economical outcomes in the population using health, survey and biological data; 2) Implementation of ML models through interactions with multiple stakeholders and people with living and lived experiences The successful applicants will have the opportunity of supervised access to several public and government/institution owned datasets, including large (over 4 million people) de-identified health data from Alberta. The Memory for Events (ME) Lab (PI: Dr. Peggy L. St. Jacques) at the University of Alberta invites applications for a fully funded postdoctoral researcher to lead cognitive neuroscience research investigating memory for real-world events. The postdoc will contribute to research examining the neural mechanisms by which people form and remember immersive memories for realistic events. Candidates excited about functional neuroimaging of memory for real-world events, the role of visual perspective in shaping mental models of events, and/or the use of state-of-the-art immersive virtual reality methodologies to study event memory are encouraged to apply. The Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute significantly to the successful conduct of multiple activities prioritized by the Scientific Office of the Provincial Seniors Health and Continuing Care. In consultation with the supervisor, the Postdoctoral Fellow will lead the design and implementation of knowledge synthesis and translation activities related to the strategic directions of the Integrated Provincial Team. The Department of Oncology within the University of Alberta conducts basic and applied research into cancers and related diseases. This project will involve studying lymphatic disorders. This includes lymphedema and lymphocytic leukemias. The main goal of this research is to understand the molecular mechanisms of lymphedema and leukemia, microenvironmental factors that contribute to disease progression and treatment resistance. The successful fellow will be conduction research in cellular models of disease, animal models of disease and correlated these results with human biospecimens from patients suffering from lymphatic disorders.

The successful candidate will work closely with Drs. Feng Qiu and Vic Adamowicz as well as an interdisciplinary team of experts on a land use project. The primary focus is on land use change modeling, emphasizing peatland dynamics in Canada, using geospatial data analysis and spatial econometrics. The role is crucial to the “Modelling Peatland Disturbance/Conversion in Alberta” project funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada. This project examines baseline trajectories for peatlands under alternative possible policy and economic futures with the intent of using this baseline as the benchmark for evaluation of climate change policy measures. 

A full-time postdoctoral fellowship position is available in the Elhenawy lab at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada. We are interested in exploring the pathogenesis of Escherichia coli strains associated with inflammatory bowel diseases. This includes studying the metabolism of these bacteria in the host environment. Moreover, we are investigating how these strains use type IV secretion system to form biofilms in the gut. We apply cutting-edge tools such as transposon insertion-sequencing, RNA-sequencing, and microscopy to characterize the role of these bacteria in driving inflammation.

The successful candidate will be passionate about innovation and want to contribute to climate change solutions. The candidate will possess a solid track record of creativity in developing experimental strategies and a demonstrate applied knowledge of catalyst science, gasification, and separation technology.  Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in chemical engineering, demonstrated experience working with catalysis (zeolite chemistry), and experience in operating high- pressure tubular reactor and knowledge of online analytical quantification techniques.  A solid understanding of kinetics, heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, and numerical methods are expected. Experience with catalyst synthesis, characterization, reactor design, experimental design (i.e., factorial experimental design), and experimental precision / execution are desired skills for the position.

A postdoc position is available immediately to study calcium and redox signaling between the Endoplasmic Reticulum and Mitochondria in the Simmen laboratory (Department of Cell Biology, University of Alberta). The successful applicant will be studying the function of redox-sensitive ER proteins in this mechanism. These proteins localize to ER-mitochondria contact sites dependent on oxidation and reduction of cysteines. A special focus interest will be on the significance of this mechanism for the crosstalk between various CNS cell types, using co-culture approaches. We are interested in exploring the underlying mechanisms linking immune dysregulation to diseases such as autoimmune type 1 diabetes and obesity-related insulin resistance, and cancer. We apply cutting-edge tools, such as multi-dimension flow cytometry, and RNA-seq, and metabolic profiling to study primary lymphocytes derived from animal models of autoimmune diseases and diet-induced obesity. The projects to be undertaken are supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)/JDRF and the Cancer Research Society and will explore the impact of insulin resistance T lymphocytes in antitumor immune surveillance. The successful candidate will investigate specific concepts related to solid tumors and other immunological studies. While the Principal Investigator would be the direct supervisor, the PDF will eventually become largely independent with regards to their day-today activities.

The project involves generation and molecular characterization of breast cancer Patient Derived Organoids (PDOs). PDOs are generated from an individual patient tumor and are cultured as 3D organoids. The candidate will use PDO culture models and next-generation-sequencing  to evaluate PDO drug sensitivity and mechanisms of resistance.  These studies will provide valuable insight on PDO potential as precision health tools.
