PhD position summary/title: PhD Position F/M Shape Visual Servoing of Deformable Objects Robust to Model Uncertainties
A significant challenge in robotics lies in interacting with deformable objects. Most existing robotic control approaches assume that objects in the scene are rigid, rendering them ineffective in handling deformations. On the other hand, many applications of interest (e.g., in the medical domain or food industry) require the capability of manipulating deformable objects. In order to address these challenges, the Rainbow team has proposed over the recent years several novel visual servoing methods that enable robots to autonomously and dexterously manipulate soft objects using real-time visual feedback from an RGB-D depth camera. From an applied perspective, the robotic task involves autonomously and accurately deforming soft objects into desired shapes in an efficient, closed-loop manner using robotic arms.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position F/M Reliability Enhancement of Post-Von Neumann Hardware Accelerators
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly indispensable across various society sectors due to its potential to transform conventional applications, from smart homes to safety-critical systems like autonomous driving and space exploration. Deep neural networks (DNNs) are state-of-the-art AI methods that outperform other approaches in language processing, image and video classification, audio and radar processing, and instance segmentation [1–3]. Notably, DNNs such as OpenAI GPT-4, Meta LLaMA2, and Mistral Mixture of Experts have captivated public interest with their high accuracy.
Due to their resource-intensive nature, DNNs require powerful dedicated hardware accelerators, such as GPUs and TPUs. However, large hardware accelerators are unsuitable for embedded safety-critical systems due to their high energy consumption. New unconventional accelerator architectures like the ones based on PIM [4] and neuromorphic computing [5] have been proposed for complex DNN deployment in critical applications where power and performance are critical requirements, offering energy-efficient alternatives to traditional GPUs and TPUs. However, their reliability, particularly against radiation-induced faults, remains to be fully assessed.
In this Ph.D., we will identify hardware and software vulnerabilities in PIM accelerators for DNNs and propose fault mitigation techniques.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position F/M New tools for quantum symmetric cryptanalysis
The development of quantum computing devices impacts severely the security guarantees of asymmetric cryptography, leading to an ongoing transition to post-quantum, i.e., quantum-secure, cryptosystems. Fortunately, mainstream symmetric primitives are considered robust against hypothetical quantum adversaries. However, our confidence in the security of symmetric cryptosystems is upheld by a rigorous cryptanalysis effort. This effort needs to continue in the context of post-quantum
security.
This PhD position takes place within the QATS project, which studies the cryptanalysis of symmetric primitives (block ciphers, hash functions…) using quantum algorithms. QATS is both focused on the systematization of new attack techniques, and the development of automatic tools that allow to find attacks.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position F/M Coordinating multiple autonomic feedback loop managers in the Cloud/Edge computing
Orchestration is a process that consists of managing dynamically and automatically computing resources in the Cloud/Edge, applications and services in order to satisfy final users.
Autonomic management and orchestration of distributed systems use feedback control loops [IBM03] that react to perceived variations (events or values in the system and its environment) by deciding upon reconfigurations (hardware and/or software). These reconfigurations are then implemented through basic actions in the system’s API.
Feedback loops can manage a variety of objectives, of different natures (e.g., self-optimization, self-configuration, self-protection, etc.). They deal with different dimensions: quantitative, temporal, logical, etc. and rely upon diverse decision techniques (control theory, scheduling, constraints resolution, learning, etc.). The general challenge is the design of autonomic managers that can handle this complexity.
This research topic considers the necessity to coordinate multiple autonomic loops, interdependent or in parallel, to face the co-existence of multiple problems in real-world complex architectures.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position F/M Privacy-Enabled AI Job Execution on Heterogeneous Consumer Hardware Architectures
Taking security into account in distributed AI work is essential to respect user privacy, be it for inference or model training [3]. This is particularly the case when using consumer computers for computing tasks, a technique known as Desktop Grid Computing [1]. This otherwise idle hardware enables low-cost execution of computing tasks. However, in the AI case, it brings privacy issues as personal training or inference data is co-located with other users’ processes. One way to overcome this challenge is to employ the hardware security capabilities provided by modern processors, coprocessors, and chipsets [6,2]. The security features present in modern consumer computers include, for example, the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chipsets integrated in most x86 motherboards, or Microsoft Pluton [5] in modern x86 processors. These modules provide numerous functions to help secure applications, such as key storage, encryption, and decryption. In addition recent processors have capabilities to securely run code in isolation, using for instance Intel SGX, SEV or TrustZone technologies [7]. TrustZone has been used successfully on AI projects in recent work [2, 4], as ARM platforms are becoming increasingly widespread in consumer computers and data centers. However, not all these security capabilities are identical, nor do they provide the same security guarantees depending on the family and model of processors and chipsets employed. Added to this is the complexity of using this type of architecture, which often requires specific programming models resulting in heavy adaptations of the executor code [4], or in other cases a very reduced performance [3].

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position F/M Computational approaches for knowledge graph mining and completion dealing with uncertainty
This PhD thesis takes place within the MetaboLinkAI ANR-SNF project, which aspires to revolutionize the analysis and interpretation of metabolomics data through a multidisciplinary approach that combines a comprehensive knowledge graph hub (MetaKH) with cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques. The project’s main goals are to enhance the querying and ease of use of metabolomics data, improve research efficiency, and stimulate creativity in the field. These objectives are set to surpass current standards by creating an encyclopedic and expandable knowledge base, integrating advanced AI to handle the uncertainties of experimental data, and enabling a broader range of hypothesis testing and evaluation.
Within this project, we will focus on developing innovative methodologies and tools, such as graph mining methods, to enhance data interaction, analysis capabilities, and representation of uncertainty.
One distinctive peculiarity of metabolomics data (and thus MetaKH) is incompleteness, variable confidence and inherent uncertainty. Here, we adopt AI to enhance the completeness and reliability of the KG and to correctly account for uncertainty.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position F/M Digital Tools for accompaniment of people with disabilities for sport activities
Sport plays an important role in the well-being of individuals: it is known to improve the self-esteem and the autonomy of people with disabilities, as well as the social inclusion [1]. Practicing sport has also a positive impact on rehabilitation and motivation. The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games have called for a revolution for parasport. Beyond the event, we must now focus on strengthening and promoting the practice of sport by people with disabilities at all levels.
The proposed PhD aims then to offer technological tools to improve performances of users of power wheelchairs: analysis of sessions, training aid, rehabilitation tools through sport. To this aim, we propose to design solutions compatible with the virtual reality power wheelchair simulator developed at INSA Rennes as part of the European Interreg ADAPT project. Simulators have already been proven to be efficient in the context of rehabilitation [2] [3] and we want to extend the study of the possibilities offered by these platforms to sport situations. The targeted use case is the powerchair football. The team in Rennes expressed the need to help the players to better take benefit of this sport.
The PhD work will rely on specification work led by our biomedical engineer. For the validation step, the PhD student will cooperate with clinicians of Pole Saint Hélier.
Concretly, the work will focus on two use cases. The first one is to provide an augmented reality feedback tool that considers the disabilities of each player to be able to replay game sequences for the analysis and improvement of individual performances. The PhD student will have to tackle the issue of tracking several of them, detecting players, ball and equipment. The first one is about beginners. As a specific powered wheelchair is used, it is tiring, discouraging in the worst case, to play efficiently when beginning. This will be addressed by a virtual reality scenario using a simulator. The PhD student will extend previous work [4] on everyday motorized wheelchairs to the Strike force model whose behavior is different.
