PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in applied mathematics for electromagnetic design
Electromagnetic design is in the process of a paradigm shift. This project is a part in this effort with the goal of changing how we think and do electromagnetic design. In the project we will use and develop mathematical tools to solve difficult and challenging design problems, mainly with the focus on array antennas, filters and sensors. PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Applied Math. within Optimization and Systems Theory
In this project we will focus on two types of problems based on the control objectives and available information: microscopic and macroscopic control. In the former the control objective is to achieve some formation in self-organized way, and modeling and shaping interaction among the agents is possible. In the latter the control objective is given in some statistical sense and modeling and shaping interaction among the agents is not feasible. To study these problems, it is very useful to borrow ideas from non-cooperative game theory in which emergence of the MAS can be tightly connected to Nash equilibria, and to use ideas of controlling moments of a distribution for large scale systems.

PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. In Information theory for stochastic decision problems
In many information processing systems but also machine learning algorithms, the system designer faces distributed decision-making problems. Since not all information is available everywhere, the decisions are taken based on the locally available information to achieve a common goal. Such decision problems have nonclassical information structure and are considered to be notoriously difficult because a general optimal design approach is missing. Quite recently the concept of coordination coding appeared in information theory. It basically describes what statistical relations can be achieved with the support of communications. Initial results show that this concept can be used to derive fundamental bounds for distributed decision-making systems. In this project we will expand those results with the goal to enhance the basic understanding as well as setting the basis for a framework for optimal designs. This new approach will lead to new fundamental insights and it might lead to solutions of long-standing fundamental problems. Moreover, it should be explored how these results can be exploited to understand better and improve machine learning algorithms.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Organic Redox Flow Batteries
The increased implementation of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind in the energy system results in an electricity production less adapted to the consumption. A solution is to store energy for shorter or longer periods in batteries. In Redox Flow Batteries (RFB), the energy is stored in tanks with redox-active solutions and not in solid materials as in conventional batteries. The design makes them particularly suitable for medium and large-scale stationary energy storage. Today’s commercial RFBs are based on metal ions typically from vanadium, which is scarce, expensive and toxic. A hot research area is to find more environmentally friendly and less costly organic redox-active substances as alternatives. These must have high activity, stability and solubility in aqueous solution. In the project, various redox-active substances will be investigated by electrochemical methods both in conventional electrochemical cells and in flow batteries. In collaboration with the Department of Chemistry, there is also an opportunity to modify and synthesize new substances and employ characterization methods such as NMR, FT-IR, Raman. We are searching for a person with a deep interest in electrochemistry and batteries who also has a solid foundation in organic chemistry and synthesis. The research will mainly be carried out at the Division of Applied Electrochemistry, Department of Chemical Engineering, KTH.

The recent rise of programmable high-speed hardware devices including P4 switches and SmartNICs have opened the doors to massive potential performance gains by offloading networking stacks from CPUs to hardware. Yet, reaping the benefits of such devices is today a largely unsolved problems. For example, multi-terabit per second network devices drop packets depending on specific time patterns.
