PhD position summary/title: Doctoral candidate (PhD student) in the field of soft matter physics

Discovered only six years ago, the ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal (LC) phase has revolutionized soft matter physics and created an explosion of creativity and excitement in the field. Apart from the excitement from a fundamental physics point of view of a spontaneously polarized 3D liquid, the nascent research field is also driven by enormous application potential in, e.g., piezoelectric energy generators, supercapacitors, soft actuators and much more. The SHADOW project takes an innovative approach to studying ferroelectric nematics in a three-PI collaboration between Prof. Irena Drevensek-Olenik (experimental physics) and Prof. Miha Ravnik (theoretical physics) at University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and the ESMP group in Luxembourg, headed by Prof. Jan Lagerwall. You will be working closely together with post-docs in the two Ljubljana groups, connecting your research with the theoretical and experimental activities in Ljubljana.

You will be preparing and studying spherical shells in which the ferroelectric nematic LC is suspended in and surrounds immiscible isotropic liquids. With tangential boundary conditions, the spherical topology requires positive-signed topological defects to form, but the typical configuration seen with conventional nematics, with four half-integer defects dominated by splay deformation, is not expected, as the ferroelectric nematic forbids half-integer defects and splay is shunned by the phase because it causes divergence in the polarisation field, with consequent bound electric charges. We will also study the behavior with normal boundary conditions, where a uniform shell would have enormous boundary charge, hence a break-up in domains is expected. Interestingly, the unequal areas of out- and inside would require a splayed configuration, which the LC avoids, hence an intriguing state of frustration should arise. Finally, we will also study chiral versions of the ferroelectric nematic LC in shell geometry, which develops structural color that can be tuned by electric field application.

A PhD position in engineering is available at the Chair for ‘Urban Water Management’ (Prof. Dr. Joachim Hansen), Department of Engineering. The successful candidate will be hired in the frame of the QUALISURE project funded by Interreg Greater Region (Principal Investigator: Dr. Silvia Venditti). The project aims to identify the emission hot spots in the catchment area of the Sûre reservoir (the largest drinking water source for Luxembourg), for which both Luxembourg and Belgium are liable. Existing wastewater treatment plants are expected to be optimized, and Nature-based solutions (NBS) intensified with innovative substrates will be installed (pilot scale) at the hot spots of emissions, both at wastewater treatment plants and Combined Sewer Overflows, so that their performance can be evaluated.

The PhD topic will aim to answer the questions related to the viability and optimization of NBS to reduce pollution by developing a novel concept. In addition to measuring micropollutants, nutrients and bacteriological contamination are also taken into account, especially for water reuse purposes. Laboratory tests will be performed before the pilot plant to characterize and select the most appropriate substrates respecting the principles of circularity and sustainability giving preference to local material.  The results will be incorporated into a decision support tool developed by a project partner enabling the intelligent distribution of pollution in the catchment area. Finally, a cross-border master plan for maintaining the quality of the Sûre will be defined.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral researcher in Psychology

The world population is living longer while there is a growing number of people relocating to new countries. Consequently, one group is increasingly visible in modern societies—people who grow old in a new country or relocate countries as older individuals (ageing migrants). There are unique characteristics that sets apart this group from populations of older people and migrants: Ageing migrants are becoming old(er) while adapting to life in a new country. The double jeopardy of ageing and being a migrant has consequences that are specific to this population which makes ageing migrants at a high risk of poor health. Addressing the opportunities and obstacles to a long and healthy life in populations of migrants is one of the acute global challenges while the implementation of digital technologies is seen as a solution.

The candidate will develop, conduct, publish, and communicate research at the intersection of migration and ageing. Related topics of interest may be health and/ or technology. The candidate will be working directly with Dr. Adrian Stanciu.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Vision-based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (vSLAM)

The position holder will work under the umbrella of a partnership project Theia with the Luxembourg-based company GAMMA AR, developing a solution for real-time vision-based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) of a hand-held tablet on real construction sites (i.e. as-built), with drift-free alignment with existing construction plans from the Building Information Management (BIM) data (i.e. as-planned). This solution will extend our novel Situational Graphs (S-Graphs), specifically, our Informed S-Graphs and our Vision-based S-Graphs. The main scientific challenges are the (1) vision-based global localization of the hand-held device within BIM (i.e. global alignment between the real construction site and the BIM) when the main structural elements (e.g. walls) are built and there are no major deviations from the BIM. (2) vision-based individual alignment between the main elements of the construction site and BIM, when there are no major deviations. And (3) vision-based global and individual alignment between the construction site and its main elements and BIM in the presence of deviations. The solution will be validated experimentally in real datasets and real construction sites (together with their BIM). On top of this, the solution will be integrated into our ready-to-use robotic platforms to demonstrate its potential use in autonomous robot systems in real-world use cases.

PhD position summary/title: 12 PHD STUDENT POSITIONS – XPOSE

Elements such as urbanization, technological advancements, and climate change have a strong impact on humans, who are constantly and increasingly exposed to factors such as air/noise pollution, chemicals, processed food and sedentary lifestyle contributing to development of chronic diseases. This generates the need for a deeper understanding of human exposure to develop countermeasures and effective interventions and inform public health policies. The XPOSE doctoral program will train the next generation of exposome scientists, capable of acting on the interface of scientific disciplines, understanding the complexities of big and real-world data and using innovative knowledge and methods to harvest and analyse it. The main scientific objective of XPOSE is to develop novel methodologies for a holistic analysis of the impact of environmental, chemical, nutritional, social, and lifestyle-related exposures on health. Taking advantage of new technological developments, such as digital health solutions, Big Data and AI, XPOSE will put a particular focus on modifiable factors that can influence exposure and its effects on individuals’ health.
The XPOSE doctoral program includes specialized exposome-related training package as well as transferable skills courses, support in career development, keynote lectures and annual PhD retreats. Depending on their chosen topic, the PhD candidates will conduct their research projects either at the Luxembourg Institute of Health  (Department of Precision Health, Department of Infection and Immunity), at the University of Luxembourg (Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine or Faculty of Human Education and Social Sciences) or at the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER). All PhD candidates will be enrolled at the University of Luxembourg in the Doctoral School in Science and Engineering or the Doctoral School in Humanities and Social Sciences, depending on the main PhD project focus.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Candidate (PhD) in Automated Testing of Autonomous Satellite Operation Orchestrators

We offer an attractive doctoral position in the context of the ATLAS project, funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) and GomSpace Luxembourg. Specifically, you will contribute to one of the space systems track of ATLAS, which concerns the automated assessment of Autonomous Satellite Operation Orchestrators (ASOOs). ASOOs automate tasks that, a few years ago, were performed manually to minimise costs and improve the quality of service. Unfortunately, physical constraints (e.g., orbits), continuous evolution (e.g., to achieve more autonomy), and the distributed nature of ASOOs make their validation and verification (V&V) costly, ineffective, and nearly infeasible. Our research will lead to a toolset capable of exercising the PUS and REST entry points of those systems, automatically setting up simulation environments, and automatically determining the correctness of execution results. To this end, we aim to combine meta-heuristic and fuzzing approaches with natural language processing (e.g., enabled by Large Language Models) to automatically derive system-level testing scenarios that ensure requirements coverage and maximise structural coverage, in addition to deriving expected outputs.

The successful candidate will join the SVV research group, headed by Prof. Domenico Bianculli, and will report to Prof. Fabrizio Pastore (lead for one space systems track of ATLAS). The team focuses on the development and design of reliable, safe, and secure software systems, carrying out both upstream activities, such as requirements quality assurance and architecture analysis, as well as downstream verification & validation activities, primarily software testing and analysis.
