Our research seeks to combine fundamental theoretical investigations with serious applications including the modeling and development of efficient systems for extracting and processing information. We aim at developing theoretical models, hybrid numerical approaches, computational algorithms, integrated software platforms, and ultimately policy insights and practical guidelines for managing the interactions among urban technologies, infrastructure and environment networks, and consumers and communities.

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University seeks a postdoctoral research associate. The position will be located at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, USA. The position is initially available for one year with a potential renewal for a total of two years.

We have developed a novel computational framework to improve understanding of the underlying dynamics that lead to escalating regional hurricane disaster risk, and to support design and analysis of public policy interventions to address them. The framework explicitly considers perspectives of and interactions among multiple key stakeholders (government, primary insurers, and homeowners), and multiple diverse interventions (e.g., home strengthening, acquisition, and insurance). It includes a computable general equilibrium model to relate hurricane damage to gross domestic product, labor wages, savings, etc. We envision the person hired in this position to extend this framework to create an optimization model that represents the government’s interest in controlling hurricane risk by balancing economic growth, equity, and regional loss exposure to determine how to allocate funds for insurance subsidies, mitigation grants and acquisition programs.

The Aydemir’s lab of Molecular Nutrition in the Division of Nutritional Sciences is seeking a full-time postdoctoral researcher. Dr. Aydemir’s research group investigates the metabolism and transporter-mediated function of micronutrients, zinc, and manganese in mammalian systems. These studies involve the integration of the techniques in biochemistry, molecular, cellular biology, neuroscience, and physiology to micronutrient biology and related disorders. The ideal candidate for this position would be a motivated individual able to work independently. The successful candidate will be expected to perform in vitro cell culture assays and in vivo laboratory animal (mice) research. We seek a candidate with strong economics skills, ideally with a focus on macroeconomic modeling. Experience with computable general equilibrium modeling is desirable but not required.  Ideally this person would have a Ph.D. in economics or a related field. The Department of Psychology in the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate for up to a 2-year period beginning fall 2022. The successful candidate will work on a currently

funded study investigating the value of youth-driven learning on positive youth development. Despite a substantial and growing research literature on curiosity, resilience, and purpose in life, there remain a small number

of viable interventions to enhance these strengths. Our lab is collaborating GripTape – a youth self-driven learning program to evaluate the effectiveness of the their intervention program, and the underlying mechanisms

that account for positive outcomes among youth participating in it. Through a series of projects, we intend to clarify precisely why GripTape works, for whom, and what psychological and social factors optimize its impact.

For this project, we will conduct sound interdisciplinary research to ensure that our science informs organizations, public policy, education, and is communicated to the general public.

A Postdoctoral Associate position is open in the Johnson lab to study how dietary intake of bioactive lipids and production of bioactive lipids from the gut microbiome can influence mammalian phenotypes. The Nwosu lab has positions for two postdoctoral associates. Applicants should be enthusiastic about conducting research on cancer metabolism and specifically on delineating the role of glutathione (GSH) in pancreatic cancer. The project has various multidisciplinary contexts including a link to the tumor microenvironment/immunology, tumor subtypes, transcriptional and epigenetic regulation as well as therapeutic resistance. The project will require the use of cell lines and mouse models to mechanistically determine how GSH promotes cancer and the effect of targeting the GSH pathway on tumor growth. The successful applicants will have access to various already existing data that will ensure a smooth commencement of the project. The Zehnder Lab at Cornell University is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to perform research on the failure of soft materials.  Research will be under the direction of Prof. Alan Zehnder.  The successful candidate will be part of a small team consisting of Profs. Zehnder and C.Y. Hui and a Ph.D. student, working to understand, quantify and model time dependent damage leading to fracture in soft materials.  The role is primarily experimental but, depending on the candidate’s interests and expertise, may involve theoretical and/or computational modeling. 

The nominal start date of this position is April 1, 2024 but a flexible start date is possible. The initial appointment will be for one year,  with the possibility of an extension depending on satisfactory performance and budget availability. 

We seek a Postdoctoral Associate with experience in statistical modeling who is also interested in natural resource decision-making and species conservation. The successful candidate will use data products from eBird Status and Trends (https://science.ebird.org), combined with datasets from field surveys and remote sensing, to map Pinyon Jay distributions and investigate potential factors behind population change. The specific focus of the project will include (a) testing the association between eBird-based population trends and habitat conditions, and (b) exploring avenues for combining information sources from eBird with data from other monitoring programs. As such, the successful candidate will work closely with researchers both at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the USDA Forest Service to address information needs while gaining valuable experience working on a large-scale, multi-agency problem. We are recruiting a postdoctoral associate to contribute to multiple research projects in tomato and eggplant genomics. The person in this position will have the ability to develop the specific direction of their research in collaboration with the PI, but likely areas of focus may include population genomics, trait discovery and mapping, and the development of genomic selection schemes and prediction models in tomato and eggplant. In addition to developing their own research project, this position is expected to play a significant role in training and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in the lab. Professor Patrick Reed’s Decision Analytics for Complex Systems research group within the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University seeks one or more postdoctoral associates.  The position(s) will initially be available for one year with a potential renewal for two or more years.

Candidates should have strong computational skills, ideally with a focus on water resources systems modeling at the river-basin scale. Experience with high-performance computing, uncertainty analysis, and coupled human-natural systems modeling is desirable. Additionally, emerging advancements in control and machine learning (e.g., deep reinforcement learning) are of interest but not required.  Ideally, candidates would have a Ph.D. in water resources engineering, hydrology, or a related field. The focus of this research will be on the risks, resilience, and sustainability of major regional water resources systems (e.g., the Mid-Atlantic, the Colorado River Basin, and the Central Valley, CA). The research will have a particular emphasis on understanding the implications of human responses to evolving climate extremes.

A postdoctoral position is available in the Fuller Spatial Ecology and Decision Science Lab https://blogs.cornell.edu/fullerlab/ with the New York Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment at Cornell University to evaluate the effects of harvest on fisher populations.

Historically, fishers were distributed across New York, but the species was nearly extirpated by the 1930s as a result of unregulated trapping. Populations have recovered in many areas, allowing for sustainable harvest opportunities in some parts of the state (e.g., parts of the Adirondacks and eastern New York). The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently opened new areas to fisher harvest in central New York with a conservative trapping season as a result of occupancy work in our lab suggesting that specific Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) may be able to support a harvest season. The postdoc will evaluate the effects of the conservative trapping season by comparing fisher density 3 years pre- versus 3 years post-trapping season regulation change (data from >600 sites using camera trapping and hair snares). In contrast to central New York, fishers in the northern zone of New York may be declining in several Adirondack Wildlife Management Units. The postdoc will develop a fisher population model and use a decision science approach to evaluate which harvest management scenario (e.g., variation in trapping season length, timing, bag limits) best achieves biological, social, and agency objectives. The research will provide decision-making guidance for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

The Fuller Spatial Ecology and Decision Science Lab https://blogs.cornell.edu/fullerlab/ at the New York Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at Cornell University is seeking candidates for a postdoctoral associate position for a bat population monitoring project using mobile acoustic survey data. The project is in support of the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat), collaborating with partners from the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The project builds on a strong foundation of mobile acoustic work conducted by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), and other state agency partners, and will involve the analysis of mobile acoustic survey data from monitoring partners in the northeastern United States. The candidate will help meet partner needs by producing bat species status and trend reports, data visualizations, and data dashboards that readily communicate analytical results to a broad audience.

The candidate will work with state, federal, and non-governmental organizations on a regional analysis of mobile acoustic data, estimating abundance and trends of bats in the northeastern United States. They will collect acoustic data files and metadata from partners and evaluate methods used to classify acoustic data. The candidate will simulate mobile acoustic data to evaluate statistical power to detect trends in relative abundance through time, and to inform sampling design.

The candidate will be a participant in the Northeast Bat Working Group, NABat Community of Practice, NABat Mobile Transect Technical Working Group, and the NABat Analytical Working Group. The candidate will be expected to develop manuscripts for submission in peer-reviewed journals and communicate research to project PIs and partners.

The candidate will be supervised by Dr. Richard Stedman, at Cornell University (Ithaca, New York) but will work with Dr. Angela Fuller, U.S. Geological Survey, NY Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit. The postdoc will work closely with Angela Fuller, U.S. Geological Survey, NY Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, the NABat program, USGS Fort Collins Science Center (Dr. Brian Reichert and Bethany Straw), the National white-nose syndrome coordinators with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Drs. The Post-Doctoral associate, as a member of the Duffield Institute, will work in collaboration with a diverse team of basic, translational, and clinical researchers to improve our understanding of canine behavior and genetics in dogs. Research will include phenotypic data compilation from various working/service dog groups with subsequent statistical and genomic analysis aimed at better understanding behavior traits related to success in working/service dogs and cognitive dysfunction in aging dogs and identifying related genetic factors.  Genomic data may span the use of targeted sequencing, whole-genome SNP profiles, whole-genome sequence data, and potentially DNA methylation and CNV analysis.  The post-doctoral associate will assist in the development of new collaborations and related research projects in this field of research as well.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to join our project team using a model-experiment (ModEx) approach to explore the exciting prospect that significant dormant-season plant nitrogen (N) uptake occurs in northern forests. The postdoc will work with our project team to interpret and model field measurements of 15N tracer studies of cold-season N uptake at two experimental sites and explore the significance of cold-season uptake in altering the coupled carbon-nitrogen (C-N) cycle under a future climate.

The Postdoctoral Associate will conduct research on protein engineering, including bioconjugation chemistry, protein/enzyme engineering, expression, purification, and characterization to perform in human health, food, and agriculture applications.  The Postdoctoral Associate will utilize techniques such as: computational and experimental rational design, plasmid construction, analysis of Sanger and Whole Genome sequence data, transformation of vectors into expression systems, Western blot and other characterization methods of engineered proteins.  Projects include developing methods to genetically engineer bacteriophages and study their proteins and host interactions. We seek a scholar with a PhD in History who is also grounded in theoretical and methodological public history approaches, in particular Museum Studies, Historic Preservation, or digital history. This position will involve developing new directions in public history teaching and research, and joining an interdisciplinary group of scholars and students whose projects focus on historic sites, digital media, museums, libraries, archives, and/or local communities. Geographic area and historical era open, but we prefer candidates who focus on climate or energy history, African American women’s history, or LGBTQ+ history in the Americas.

The postdoc will teach a lower-level and an upper-level course each year that engages with public history topics and methods (involving, for instance, monuments, museums, oral history, historic preservation, walking tours, historically engaged performance, or documentary film). These courses would emphasize applied forms of historical engagement by undergraduates such as conducting archival research, learning and practicing oral history methods, developing curatorial skills, actively engaging with local and global individuals and communities, and asking theoretical questions about history as a process of knowledge production. The postdoc would play a central role in the Public History Initiative (PHI) and the Critical Inquiry into Values, Imagination, and Culture (CIVIC) initiative, by offering interdisciplinary courses and programming (such as lecture series) relevant to their specific field.

To understand and monitor migratory birds, their numbers, and their responses to global change, data and methods are urgently needed that can capture their movements at population scales. BirdFlow is an innovative, NSF-funded project that uses the Cornell Lab’s eBird database to infer the movements of migratory birds across the annual cycle. The Postdoctoral Associate will lead research that utilizes BirdFlow models to expand our knowledge of bird movements, including studying migratory connectivity and its associations with population trends, investigating species’ resilience to climate change and environmental fluctuations, and exploring BirdFlow models for providing real-time information on species’ movements in the context of the BirdCast public website. The postdoc will also work on integrating additional data sources, such as BirdCast radar data, individual tracking data and banding data, to improve and validate BirdFlow models. With the BirdFlow team, the postdoc will have an opportunity to contribute to products and software that will be released for scientists, conservation practitioners, industry, and the public to explore and investigate the phenomenon of avian migration. 

The Society for the Humanities at Cornell University invites applications for residential fellowships from scholars and artists whose projects reflect on the 2025-26 theme of Scale. Up to six fellows will be appointed. The fellowships are held for one year (August through July). Each Society Fellow will receive $62,000.

Fellows include scholars and practitioners from other universities and members of the Cornell faculty released from regular duties. Fellows at the Society for the Humanities are “residential,” and will collaborate with one another and the Taylor Family Director of the Society for the Humanities, Durba Ghosh, Professor of History. Fellows spend their time in research and writing during the residential fellowship, and are required to participate in a weekly Fellows Seminar work-shopping each other’s projects and discussing readings based on the yearly theme.

The nature of this fellowship year is social and communal—fellows forge connections outside the classroom and the lecture hall by sharing meals following the weekly seminar and attending post-lecture receptions and other casual events throughout the year. Fellows live and work in Ithaca, NY, and are expected to be in their offices on campus frequently. All applicants for Society Fellowships should share in this commitment to creating a supportive and intellectually stimulating community.

Fellows teach one small seminar during their fellowship year appropriate for graduate students and advanced undergraduates. Though courses are designed to fit the focal theme, there are no additional restrictions on what or how the course should be taught. Fellows are encouraged to experiment with both the content and the method of their seminar particularly as it relates to their current research.

The research group of Dr. Ana Bento at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, seeks two skilled postdoctoral scholars to join our research team. Specializing in infectious disease eco-epidemiology and public health modeling, we study vaccine-preventable respiratory infections (e.g., SARS-CoV-2, influenza, pertussis) and climate sensitive expanding arboviral diseases (e.g., Dengue, Chikungunya, Oropouche, Zika).  Our research group is interested in the following topics: transmission dynamics of infectious diseases; impact of surveillance and public health interventions with an overarching goal of informing public health policy as well as local and regional capacity and outbreak preparedness; and one health approaches for anticipating viral emergence in hotspots of emerging infectious diseases. The successful candidate will combine mathematical models with classic and novel surveillance, serological and climate change data to examine the dynamics of infection and immunity for antigenically variable pathogens.

Beyond these positions, we welcome applicants proposing interesting scientific directions in infectious disease modeling broadly.  Support will be given to develop grant applications led by a highly independent postdoctoral scholar with a clear vision of scientific investigation that falls within the lab’s mission. 

The Agroecology Postdoctoral Associate will join and contribute to a vibrant community of scholars across Cornell University, including faculty, researchers, visiting fellows, and graduate students who combine interdisciplinary interests in the everyday experiences of agroecology, political ecology of food systems, and critical climate change adaptation with disciplinary skills and interests from development studies, to ecology, to crop and soil sciences and science and technology studies, among other disciplines.

The successful candidate will work closely with Professor Bezner Kerr to advance several ongoing projects related to agroecology and rural development in Malawi, as well as develop new research projects on transdisciplinary agroecology and climate change adaptation in Africa. The Postdoctoral Associate will be integrated into Professor Bezner Kerr’s lab group on food, agroecology, climate change adaptation and social justice, including mentorship of graduate and undergraduate students in research methods. They will meet regularly with students to discuss works in progress and other issues. Additionally, they will contribute to the Department of Global Development, the Institute of African Studies and Cornell more broadly by working on their own research and connecting to colleagues across the university. Depending on interests and feasibility, they may be able to teach and/or engage in off-campus fieldwork with Professor Bezner Kerr.

We seek to hire a postdoctoral associate as part of our U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)-funded project on carbon governance and digital agriculture. This is a one-year full time research position that is renewable for a second year, dependent on available work, funding, and performance.

The project aims to advance an interdisciplinary analysis of the implications of emerging technologies for Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) applied to GHG emissions reductions in agriculture. Developments in remote sensing, computer science and biogeochemistry support visions of cost-effective and reliable “natural climate solutions”. At the same time, there are hot technical and political debates regarding the assumptions embedded in reliance on carbon offsets from agriculture.

We seek applications from social scientists, engineers, and natural scientists interested in conducting empirical analysis at the intersection of technological innovation, political economy, agriculture, and carbon governance. The position is a full-time appointment on the Cornell campus in Ithaca, NY. This position entails field work and laboratory-based research examining forest nitrogen dynamics over winter, how these processes will change with warming winters and reduced snowpacks, and how they compare to summer conditions. The primary focus of this position is to lead a cross-season isotopic tracer (15N) study of plant, soil and microbial processes at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.  This position is based on Cornell’s campus in Ithaca, NY, with travel to Hubbard Brook. The position includes field, laboratory, and quantitative analyses, as well as opportunities for written and oral presentations of project results.

The Cornell University Action Research Collaborative (ARC) is seeking to hire a full-time research associate to work and manage on several projects across New York State. The mission of ARC is to develop and support equitable and sustainable research-practice-policy partnerships that can generate solutions to improve the lives of communities that are too often neglected. ARC approaches partnerships using multiple disciplinary perspectives and methodological approaches. Also, it is imperative that community partners are involved in all phases of projects (i.e., from study design to dissemination of findings). The overarching goal is for these projects to inform interventions and public policies that support the well-being of marginalized populations. The research associate will conduct and manage social scientific research projects on how structural, cultural, and political processes affect people’s experiences, as well as downstream outcomes in public policy and broader society. Applicants should have experience conducting quantitative or mixed-methods (quantitative and qualitative) social scientific research with multidisciplinary teams. The candidate will be expected to work on projects with faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate research assistants from multiple social scientific disciplines (e.g., nutrition, communications, psychology), as well as community and policy partners.

This position will begin as a one-year appointment, starting August 1, 2024 (start date negotiable). However, our hope is to find a candidate who is interested in continuing beyond the initial year. Reappointment is possible for an additional 2 years, contingent upon available funding resources, available work, the candidate’s successful performance, and valid visa status, if applicable. The position will be based in New York City and will have a hybrid work arrangement. Occasional travel to Cornell University, Ithaca, NY will be required.
