Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher position in Cell replacement therapy for Parkinson’s disease

We look for two postdoctoral fellows interested in developing precision cell replacement strategies for Parkinson’s disease based on cell engineering. Our laboratory has previously provided proof of concept that the conversion of somatic cells into midbrain dopamine neurons in vivo can rescue motor deficits in a mouse model of PD (Rivetti di val Cervo, 2017, Nature Biotechnology). Expanding on our previous single cell RNA-seqeuncing analysis of the developing human midbrain (La Manno et al., 2016, Cell), we have recently identified a number of factors important for the development and maintenance of adult DA neuron subtype identity (bioRxiv 2022.10.24.513487 and 2022.10.12.511898). We now aim at engineering somatic cells into subtype-specific DA neurons in order to develop more precise cell replacement strategies for Parkinson’s disease.

(16) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral positions in CNS regeneration

Our lab is interested in stimulating regeneration in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS). We aim to uncover the principles of cell fate regulation during development and repurpose them for regeneration. We use a multidisciplinary approach that involves stem cell biology, systems biology, computational biology, molecular engineering and mouse models of disease. Using single cell multiomics, we recently discovered a latent regenerative potential in adult spinal cord stem cells and designed a targeted intervention to elicit such potential. This intervention stimulated endogenous remyelination and improved axon conduction after injury (Llorens-Bobadilla et al. Science 2020). These studies suggest that activating the right endogenous genes after injury could unlock the dormant regenerative potential of resident stem cells.

(18) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Bacterial pathogenesis and vaccines

We search for a postdoctoral researcher that together with Professor Birgitta Henriques Normark, her research group and her collaborators will work on projects in bacteriology and respiratory tract infections. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies infectious diseases as one of the greatest global health threats. Lower respiratory tract infections are a major cause of death globally. Pneumococci are a major contributor to both morbidity and mortality and being the most common causes of milder respiratory tract infections such as otitis media and sinusitis as well as of severe diseases such as pneumonia, septicemia and meningitis. However, pneumococci are also common colonizers of the upper respiratory tract of healthy children. It is still not totally clear what determines whether the bacteria will cause a disease or just stay colonizing healthy individuals. The research group focuses on host-microbe interactions with a major interest in pneumococcal infections.

About The Karolinska Institute, Sweden – Official Website

The Karolinska Institute sometimes known as the (Royal) Caroline Institute in English is a research-led medical university in Solna within the Stockholm urban area of Sweden. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The assembly consists of fifty professors from various medical disciplines at the university. The current rector of Karolinska Institute is Ole Petter Ottersen, who took office in August 2017.

The Karolinska Institute was founded in 1810 on the island of Kungsholmen on the west side of Stockholm; the main campus was relocated decades later to Solna, just outside Stockholm. A second campus was established more recently in Flemingsberg, Huddinge, south of Stockholm.

The Karolinska Institute is Sweden’s third oldest medical school, after Uppsala University (founded in 1477) and Lund University (founded in 1666). It is one of Sweden’s largest centres for training and research, accounting for 30% of the medical training and more than 40% of all academic medical and life science research conducted in Sweden.

The Karolinska University Hospital, located in Solna and Huddinge, is associated with the university as a research and teaching hospital. Together they form an academic health science centre. While most of the medical programs are taught in Swedish, the bulk of the PhD projects are conducted in English. The institute’s name is a reference to the Caroleans.
