We are seeking to add to our team an energetic and creative postdoctoral research associate.

We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher who will focus on synthesis of organic and organometallic compounds with applications in harsh environment materials. You will also be involved in developing formulations and processes for infiltrating preceramic polymer and organometallic compounds in fiber based preforms to manufacture ultrahigh temperature compounds (UHTC’s) structures. Knowledge of the organic chemistry, synthetic methods, and the skill level to work with air and/or water reactive compounds will be a mandatory requirement.  Additional experience with composite fabrication and basic knowledge of mechanical testing associated with composite material evaluations will be considered a plus.     

The position resides in the SANS and Spin Echo Group, part of the Large Scale Structures Section of the Neutron Scattering Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

In this position you will: (1) Perform time resolved small-angle neutron scattering experiments to study the structure of plant thylakoid membranes in vivo. (2) Contribute to the development of a sample environment for the in-situ illumination of photosynthetic systems. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on Advanced electron microscopy research for energy materials.  This position resides in the STEM group in the Nanomaterials Characterization Section, Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), Physical Science Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

As part of our team, you will investigate the atomic and electronic structures in materials and correlate them with relevant properties for energy applications. You will utilize ORNL’s new capabilities of aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). A particular focus of the research will be to understand interfacial phenomena in catalysts or solid-state battery materials.  Advanced electron microscopy capabilities, such as 4D-STEM and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) will be integrated into in situ environment/biasing experiments. A postdoctoral associate position is available immediately for candidates interested in and capable of performing leading-edge computational science research and development with a focus on the development of software for calculations in lattice quantum chromodynamics (Lattice QCD). The Biosciences Division of ORNL has an opening for a plant biologist (Postdoctoral Research Associate, Plant Systems Biology) to conduct basic research on plant genes and phenotypes that are foundational to developing sustainable biomass feedstocks. Selected applicant will join a team of diverse, cross-disciplinary scientific and technical staff working to characterize and understand the variation in plant phenotypic traits and response to stresses and link these to genetic information under the Center for Bioenergy Innovation project (https://cbi.ornl.gov/).

The Plant Systems Biology Group seeks to explore and understand the network of traits, genes, proteins, metabolites, and environmental signals that lead to improved plant characteristics and performance. The selected candidate will be based in the plant systems biology group, which is undertaking broad, integrated approaches to enhance fundamental understanding of genetic controls of plant productivity, biomass quality and sustainability using bioenergy-relevant plants. The specific project will be within the Center for Bioenergy Innovation which seeks to improve biomass characteristics in the bioenergy crop Populus via genetic engineering, genome editing and genomic selection as part of research tasks in the poplar team.
