PhD position summary/title: PhD positions (2) in Electrocatalytic CO2 and CO Reduction at Elevated Temperatures for Making Long Carbon Chain Species – DTU Physics
We do have processes to make large chain carbons currently with CO2 and H2 via the Fischer-Tropsch process, though this process needs to operate at high temperatures and pressures while producing a wide distribution of carbon chain lengths, many of which have minimal societal usage. The end result is in an inefficient overall process. However, an interesting difference between CO2 electrolysis and Fischer-Tropsch is that they have completely different mechanisms in creating a carbon-carbon bond. Traditionally CO2 electrolysis has always operated either near room temperature (25 C) or at ultra-high temperatures (600-800 C) is solid oxide electrolyzers, however Fischer-Tropsch operates at 150-300 C and this has not really been investigated.
This project will look to operate CO2 electrolysis at elevated temperatures and pressures approaching the Fischer-Tropsch regime to see how the catalysts behave in these conditions. We will focus on studying this both in aqueous solutions and non-aqueous solutions as each behaves substantially different. Because of this we have two open PhD positions: one for aqueous and non-aqueous CO2 reduction.
In investigating this topic, the PhD candidate’s main tool would be electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and potentially impedance measurements. All electrochemical devices are linked in-operando to either a gas chromatograph of mass spectrometer that the candidate will learn to operate and control. HPLC will typically be used for liquid products, but potentially NMR may also be used. Catalysts will typically produced via physical vapor deposition techniques (sputtering, CVD, or ALD) or via wet chemical techniques. The catalysts morphology and electronic structure will be characterized via tools such as XPS, ISS, SEM, TEM, STM, and XRD. Surface enhanced FTIR may also be used if we feel this can give substantial insight into understanding the science.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Assessing Hearing Performance of Teenagers with Hearing Aids and Cochlear Implants using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS)’ – DTU Health Tech
Are you passionate about making a meaningful impact in the lives of patients with hearing aids and cochlear implants? Do you possess a blend of signal processing skills and clinical interest in teenagers with hearing devices? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you!
The Hearing Systems Section at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), together with the Ear, Nose, and Throat and Audiology Department at Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen University Hospital, are seeking a motivated and qualified candidate for a 3-year PhD position. This PhD project aims to investigate hearing performance and brain activity during listening tasks, using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), which is a non-invasive neuroimaging method that measures changes in blood oxygen levels in the brain. We will focus on patients who are teenagers, as they are considered the new generation of patients with hearing devices.
Despite the overall success of cochlear implants and hearing aids, there is a large heterogeneity in hearing outcomes among patients. This variability might depend on the degree and dynamics of cross-modal plasticity in the auditory and visual cortices of the brain. Age and auditory deprivation periods have affected the reported results in literature. By focusing on teenagers in this PhD project, we aim to gain deeper insights into the neuroplasticity during crucial developmental stages. The PhD project can lead to a new clinical tool to assess hearing aid benefit in younger children and other patients with limited cooperation abilities. We will specifically use fNIRS as neuroimaging method because a further challenge with cochlear implants is that the devices are magnetic and electrically driven and consequently incompatible with other traditional neuroimaging techniques. While fNIRS can bypass this problem, the analysis pipelines are not standardized yet. Therefore, analysing fNIRS responses will be a significant portion of the PhD project.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Tensions in Corporate-Startup Relationships – DTU Entrepreneurship
DTU, The Technical University of Denmark, Centre for Technology Entrepreneurship invites applicants for a 3-year PhD position on “Identifying and Managing Tensions in Corporate-Startup Relationships”, starting on 1 October 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter in 2024.
There has been substantial growth in corporate-startup collaborations, which occur through various vehicles such as innovation/digital labs, accelerators, corporate venture capitals, partnerships, and incubators. While there are clear motivations for corporates and startups to collaborate, data shows that many of these collaborations fail due to tensions within the corporate-startup relationships. However, there has been a lack of understanding regarding these tensions.
The existing literature on corporate-startup tension has primarily developed within the empirical context of corporate venture capital and strategic alliances. For instance, it has focused on tensions arising from the misappropriation risk of intellectual property rights (i.e., the sharks dilemma), how open the parties should be in sharing vs. protecting knowledge with the partner (i.e., the openness paradox), or misaligned strategic orientations. However, there are tensions that the literature has not examined despite their existence within the phenomenon. Additionally, the literature has been silent about the theoretical drivers of tensions and lacks empirical evidence regarding which tension management strategies work and which do not.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Explainable AI and Bioinformatics for Health – DTU Health Tech
You will have the opportunity to do research in the development of methods that are explainable, interpretable, and understandable to humans for predicting health outcomes which may be dependent on nonlinear interactions. Prediction of human health may be based on different types of genomic data as well as other types of data including expression data, immune profiling, metabolome data, imaging data and general health data (e.g. from electronic patient journals, or other registers). Classical genetic studies often use polygenic risk scores (PRS), which sum up the effect over the strongest associated variants to predict an individual’s phenotype. However, these linear methods have been shown to have limited diagnostic value, which has spawned an interest in more complex models for calculating polygenic risks. This project will explore the possibility of integrating the benefits of linear methods with deep neural networks, which can learn interactions and non-linear relationships. A central goal of the project is to develop explainable machine learning models that allow insight into the interaction between genetics and other types of data that can be used for developing tailored medical approaches for disease diagnosis and prevention. The research will help implement, validate, benchmark, and improve how bioinformatics is used in medical devices.

Jensen project: Quantification of marine Ecosystem Services in connection with Marine nature Restoration (QESMAR). The overall aim of the QESMAR project is to test, develop and standardize assessment methods (performance criteria) to enable quantification of ecosystem services (ES’s) for habitats, species, stocks of blue carbon and nutrients, and water quality in existing restoration projects. This will make it possible to assess restoration progress against goals, determine comparability across different restored habitats and conditions, and support better evidence-based guidelines for future marine restoration. To support this, two PhD projects and one post doc project will be initiated that in a collaboration framework to develop means to efficiently monitor and quantify a range of ES’s associated with the marine restoration project on restored habitats of eelgrass meadows, stone reefs, and bivalve beds/reefs in Danish coastal waters like Løgstør Bredning, Vejle Fjord and Roskilde Fjord. The three projects are expected to be coordinated with joint efforts in field campaigns and data analysis.
