The postdoc position is supervised by Dr. Xiaoting Li in the Department of East Asian Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Alberta. The research project that the postdoc will participate in is a multimodal study of the directive system in Mandarin interaction. The start date of this position is January 1, 2023. A slightly later start date in spring 2023 might be possible upon negotiation. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Xiaoting Li on data collection in the field, supervising data transcription, participating in data analysis and research dissemination (publications and presentations). We seek a postdoctoral fellow with expertise in adaptive immunology interested in investigating the links between T cell and myeloid polarization, viral and autoimmune inflammation using mouse models. Another PDF position is available to study the underlying mechanisms linking immune dysregulation and cardiac and skeletal muscle wasting during cancer and chemotherapy. A postdoc position is available immediately to study calcium and redox signaling between the Endoplasmic Reticulum and Mitochondria in the Simmen laboratory (Department of Cell Biology, University of Alberta). The successful applicant will be studying the function of redox-sensitive ER proteins in this mechanism. These proteins localize to ER-mitochondria contact sites dependent on oxidation and reduction of cysteines. A special focus interest will be on the significance of this mechanism for the crosstalk between various CNS cell types, using co-culture approaches. The Division of Gastroenterology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta, is offering a postdoctoral position in the area of digital platform based prehabilitation in individuals with chronic disease. The Department of Oncology within the University of Alberta conducts basic and applied research into cancers and related diseases. This project will involve studying lymphatic disorders. This includes lymphedema and lymphocytic leukemias. The main goal of this research is to understand the molecular mechanisms of lymphedema and leukemia, microenvironmental factors that contribute to disease progression and treatment resistance. One Postdoctoral Fellowship position is available in the Epidemiological Methods for Equity Research to Generate Evidence (EMERGE) Research Lab in the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta, Canada. The applicant will work on a CIHR-funded project investigating the role of public health on adolescent health during the COVID-19 pandemic. The fellow will work closely with Dr. Roman Pabayo (lead investigator of the EMERGE Research Lab) and Dr. Brendan Smith at Public Health Ontario (co-principal investigator).  

The Forsythe Lab located within the Alberta Respiratory Center (ARC) at the University of Alberta is seeking a post-doctoral fellow with a strong background in immunology or neuroscience. The successful candidate will investigate how the nervous and immune systems interact to facilitate bidirectional communication between the lung and brain, how this communication is influenced by microbiota or exposure to specific microbes and the consequences for diseases of the airways. One position for a post-doctoral fellow is open at the Kane/Vliagoftis lab. The successful candidate will work on a research project funded by CIHR. The main aim of the project is to understand the mechanism of action of a new mucosal vaccination adjuvant and define its clinical utility using preclinical animal models. Funding for up to 2 years is available, but the successful candidate will also be encouraged to look for external funding for their studies.

This position would be to do research in theoretical gravitational physics and/or related subjects in quantum theory, such as black hole evaporation, black hole information, quantum cosmology, and related areas. The position is for two years (with the second year conditional upon satisfactory progress in the first year), beginning in Fall 2023. Compensation is at $50,000 per annum with supplemental benefits.

The Memory for Events (ME) Lab (PI: Dr. Peggy L. The Housing for Health Project focuses on improving two mixed income and one affordable housing development and their surrounding neighbourhoods in Edmonton, Leduc, and Whitecourt, Alberta. The project is supported through a 60-month multi-sector partnership between the University of Alberta, Alberta-based real estate developers, and a not-for-profit affordable housing organization. Improvements include the built environment and associated programming of the three new residential developments targeted at aging populations and the project is examining potential impacts on active living, healthy eating and social connections of residents.

The Indigenous and Global Health Research Group (IGHRG) led by Dr. Sangita Sharma, the Alberta Health Services Chair in Indigenous Health, in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta is currently accepting applications for a postdoctoral position. The IGHRG is a multi-disciplinary research group of 25+ staff that was established by Dr. Sharma in 2010. Dr. Sharma and the team have an extensive international background working with over 22 populations in various countries worldwide but now primarily focus on working with Indigenous and/or ethnic minority populations in Alberta, Northwest Territories (NT), and Nunavut (NU). Current funded projects include: assessing health and wellness and access to healthcare services with Indigenous seniors and Elders living in NT; maternal and infant health care and outcomes for Indigenous populations in NT; identifying the barriers to and opportunities for improving access to healthcare services for Indigenous populations in NT to inform culturally appropriate programming to improve patient experiences; capturing the anticipated and unanticipated consequences of COVID-19 preventive measures with Indigenous communities in NU and NT; and working with NT Indigenous communities to understand the perspectives of community members toward HPV, HPV vaccination along with attitudes towards and experience with the COVID-19 vaccine. We are looking for an individual with research experience broadly in the area of energy and environmental systems engineering. NanoBio-Systems group has a new post-doctoral opening in development of cross-disciplinary nanoplasmonics-enabled platform for characterization and analysis of biomolecular phase-condensates. The incumbent will apply a potentially transformative method of nanoplasmonics to analyze phase-condensation phenomena for proteins associated with misfolding diseases.

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) to undertake Geographical Information Systems (GIS) assessments for the project. Tasks will include but are not limited to: research design, data collection, data analysis, and data dissemination via conference presentations, reports, and peer-reviewed publications. The PDF will conduct geospatial data analysis and management using open-source geographic information and relational database management systems (ArcGIS, QGIS, PostgreSQL, PostGIS) with proprietary and open-source data sources (e.g., DMTI, Municipal Government, OSM), compile and manage spatial and non-spatial data, and build and design cartographic/mapping visualizations. This position involves working closely with clinician researchers and our laboratory technicians on the design of experiments, data analysis and interpretation, grant applications and publications specific to the gut microbiota, GI infections, pathobionts and antimicrobial resistance testing. This work focuses on development of a clinical device known as the Advanced System for Implant Stability Testing (ASIST) for non-invasive evaluation of the bone-implant interface in lower limb osseointegrated implants. The ASIST isolates the interface properties by measuring the acceleration upon impact with the implant system, in combination with an analytical model that is based on vibration theory. We aim to apply this technique in the clinic to track the stability of the bone-implant interface over the time, thereby providing a method to detect early loosening of the implant.
