The Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine (DAPM) at the University of Alberta is committed to providing excellence in patient care, research and education. Research in the DAPM spans the spectrum from fundamental and translational work through medical education, epidemiology and health services research. The Research Associate will carry out or support high-level, complex, research projects in collaboration with faculty members and other researchers. Duties may include research design, methodology determination, analysis and/or other activities that facilitate the work of the DAPM. Duties may include all phases of data collection and analysis (e.g. clinical trials, test and questionnaire design) and could include such activities as the preparation of proposals for new research activities, ethics applications, site contract negotiations, the presentation of research findings and/or the preparation of reports and papers. This work focuses on development of a clinical device known as the Advanced System for Implant Stability Testing (ASIST) for non-invasive evaluation of the bone-implant interface in lower limb osseointegrated implants. The ASIST isolates the interface properties by measuring the acceleration upon impact with the implant system, in combination with an analytical model that is based on vibration theory. We aim to apply this technique in the clinic to track the stability of the bone-implant interface over the time, thereby providing a method to detect early loosening of the implant.

Translating Research into Elder Care (TREC) is a collaborative partnership of investigators and decision makers whose aim is to improve quality of life and quality of care for older people in residential care. TREC began an integrated program of research in 2007 and has run continuously since. One of TRECs keystone projects, Improving Nursing Home Care through Feedback on PerfoRMance Data (INFORM), was a successful trial with managers and their care teams from over 60 long-term care (LTC) facilities in BC and AB. Building on this work TREC is working with stakeholders and funders in BC to support wider scale implementation of INFORM. A process evaluation run in parallel with implementation of phase 1 will examine how trained facilitators support implementation of INFORM, the fidelity with which they do so, and the barriers, facilitators and contextual factors that influence implementation.

The Research Associate will support the research activities of the PI laboratories, and in particular, (1) the execution of an annual high Arctic community-based field program (50%), and (2) the analysis and publication of data from this field program (50%). The main responsibilities related to (1) will involve liaising with community members, ordering of equipment for spring and summer field seasons, developing a database and visualizations for collected marine observations, writing of research grants and annual reports to support continuing Arctic field-work, conducting high Arctic field-work, and supporting student field seasons (spring and summer). The main responsibilities related to (2) will involved in (2) will involve timely analysis of a 3-year continuing ocean dataset, analysis of ocean modelling output, and publication of scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed publications.
