Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Research Assistant/Associate in Cellular Hormone Dynamics

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant/Research Associate position in the group of Dr Alexander Jones at the Sainsbury Laboratory, Cambridge University.

The cellular dynamics of the plant hormones underpin all aspects of plant development and environmental responses. The Jones group at SLCU has recently engineered a series of high affinity FRET biosensors to track such dynamics for gibberellin, abscisic acid, auxin and salicylic acid in high resolution.

This post will involve targeted deployment of these FRET biosensors to illuminate previously undetectable cellular and subcellular hormone patterns in vivo. The project’s eventual aim will be aimed at gaining a mechanistic understanding of how and why hormone accumulations or depletions are modulated in space and time. The Jones group combines imaging of FRET biosensors with high-resolution genetic and biochemical perturbations to allow us to link signal integration upstream and program activation downstream of phytohormone cellular dynamics. We also collaborate with mathematicians to build multi-scale understanding of these complex and important signaling pathways.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Assistant – Novel technologies and therapeutics in kidney transplantation (Part Time, Fixed Term)

We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated part-time research assistant to join our group, led by Professor Michael Nicholson, to work on the transformation and modification of kidneys for transplantation. Supervised by Dr Sarah Hosgood and funded by Kidney Research UK, the post will be based in the University of Cambridge Department of Surgery at Addenbrooke’s Hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus (http://cambridge-biomedical.com).

In kidney transplantation, blood group compatibility is a major barrier to donor – recipient matching. Patients with more restrictive blood types like type O or B often wait twice as long for a kidney compared to patients with blood group A. Longer waiting times are associated with poorer outcome and a higher chance of patient death. To overcome this barrier, a major research theme of our group is the use of novel machine perfusion technology for the enzymatic conversion of blood group A and B kidneys to O-type.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate (Fixed Term)

The postholder will work within a programme focused on understanding mitochondrial dynamics and membrane contact sites as key regulators of cell fate decisions. Mitochondria form a dynamic and interconnected network that is constantly remodelled by cycles of membrane fission and fusion. These dynamic transitions are essential not only for proper mitochondrial function but also for responding to cellular needs and adapt to the metabolic state of the cell. To execute cellular functions, mitochondria establish membrane contact sites with other organelles, including the endoplasmic reticulum, peroxisomes, trans-Golgi network vesicles and lysosomes. These membrane contact sites are hotspots for metabolites flux and tightly regulate mitochondrial shape and architecture. While defects in mitochondrial morphology or contact sites have been associated with human diseases, the molecular mechanisms linking mitochondrial membrane remodelling to cell fate decisions are not fully understood.

The goal of the project is to i) apply cutting-edge microscopy methods coupled with biochemical analysis to study the molecular mechanisms regulating mitochondrial morphology, ii) investigate how mitochondria-organelle contact sites drive mitochondrial membrane remodelling and mtDNA dynamics, and iii) elucidate the relevance of these events to mitochondria and mtDNA quality control, as well as to inflammation and to human disease.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Assistant/Associate in Structural Damage Assessment & Data Analysis (Blast Loading) (Fixed Term)

The 2020 Beirut explosion highlighted the need for a unified approach to blast load prediction and structural damage assessment. Our current inability to accurately predict blast loading in such environments limits advancements in structural damage predictions in real settings. Our aim is to raise the scientific benchmark of these linked but currently disconnected disciplines, and in doing to generate tools and frameworks to strengthen links along the entire event chain: detonation, to blast propagation, to loading development, to structural damage.

Under the EPSRC-funded “MicroBlast” project, colleagues at Sheffield University will perform scaled experiments to replicate the 2020 Beirut explosion, generating detailed, data-rich loading maps to supplement connected studies into structural damage assessment.

About The University of Cambridge, United Kingdom – Official Website

The University of Cambridge is a collegiate research university in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Founded in 1209 and granted a royal charter by Henry III in 1231, Cambridge is the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world’s fourth-oldest surviving university. The university grew out of an association of scholars who left the University of Oxford after a dispute with the townspeople. The two English ancient universities share many common features and are often jointly referred to as Oxbridge.

Cambridge is formed from a variety of institutions which include 31 semi-autonomous constituent colleges and over 150 academic departments, faculties and other institutions organised into six schools. All the colleges are self-governing institutions within the university, each controlling its own membership and with its own internal structure and activities. All students are members of a college. Cambridge does not have a main campus, and its colleges and central facilities are scattered throughout the city. Undergraduate teaching at Cambridge is organised around weekly small-group supervisions in the colleges – a feature unique to the Oxbridge system. These are complemented by classes, lectures, seminars, laboratory work and occasionally further supervisions provided by the central university faculties and departments. Postgraduate teaching is provided predominantly centrally.

Cambridge University Press, a department of the university, is the oldest university press in the world and currently the second largest university press in the world. Cambridge Assessment, also a department of the university, is one of the world’s leading examining bodies and provides assessment to over eight million learners globally every year. The university also operates eight cultural and scientific museums, including the Fitzwilliam Museum, as well as a botanic garden. Cambridge’s libraries, of which there are 116, hold a total of around 16 million books, around nine million of which are in Cambridge University Library, a legal deposit library. The university is home to, but independent of, the Cambridge Union – the world’s oldest debating society. The university is closely linked to the development of the high-tech business cluster known as ‘Silicon Fen’. It is the central member of Cambridge University Health Partners, an academic health science centre based around the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
