PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Nuclear Propulsion (Doktorgradskandidat i kjernefysisk fremdrift på skip)

Nuclear propulsion has been used by navies for more than 50 years, but merchant shipping has not caught on ultimately due to costs. The NuProShip I project is one of the first projects in the world trying to rejuvenate the idea of nuclear propulsion for merchant shipping based on entirely new reactor technologies. These new reactor technologies are so called Generation IV technologies unlike nuclear propulsion today and in the past which are Generation II and III. The project is to complete a concept and feasibility study leading to a follow-up project where the technologies will be developed. However, not all issues are covered in sufficient details.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in the Area of Self-Sovereign Decentralized Identity and Blockchain Technologies

We have a vacancy for a PhD Candidate in the Area of Self-sovereign Decentralized Identity with focus on Web3 and Blockchain Technologies at the Department of Computer Science. These days, a variety of services are widely available online via various channels like mobile, web, and IoT. This not only provides convenience to end-users but also comes along with risks. Together with a genuine user, there are online users of evil characters such as hackers and mischief-makers who lurk in the shadows waiting to commit fraud, steal someone else’s identity and data. That is why protecting digital assets and services is of paramount concern these days! Unfortunately, online security breaches are increasing more than ever. It is reported that more than 7 million data records are being breached every day and are expected to increase. So, increased reliance on the internet means we have a lot more to lose if something goes sideways. The stakes are raised; we need impeccable, reliable digital security!

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Machine Learning / Deep Learning for Medical Imaging Purposes

The main goal of this Ph.D. is to extend the RescueDoppler technology with AI-based tools that can give real-time assistance regarding the quality of the chest compressions in the case of a sudden cardiac arrest and detect automatically successful restoration of blood flow. The RescueDoppler system includes a small and lightweight ultrasound probe with a patch for attaching the probe to the neck, an ultrasound scanner, and proprietary software for signal analysis. The technology is operator-independent and does not require ultrasound expertise. However, interpreting the Doppler curves in a stressful situation in the field can be tedious and require experience that is not always available. With the AI tools, the operator will be presented with an easy-to-understand plot that shows the quality of the compressions and is alerted when the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) is detected.  The AI algorithm relies on the Doppler spectrum image; even though the AI works on the Doppler spectrum, this is not presented to the operator.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Computer Architecture

The objective of this PhD project is to specialize server processor architectures to match application characteristics. Datacenter applications are characterized by massive instruction footprints that frequently stall the core front-end. This project will investigate low overhead instruction delivery mechanisms to mitigate this front-end bottleneck. Datacenter applications offer very limited instruction- and memory-level parallelism which causes core back-end to burn energy on instructions without much performance gain. This project will investigate allocating expensive resources only to performance critical instructions while executing the rest cheaply.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Timber-Concrete Composites

Using wood as a structural material is continuously gaining more attention due to the increasing demand for sustainable infrastructure. The characteristics such as lightweight,  appropriate compressive and tensile strength, and being a renewable and environmentally friendly resource are among the main reasons for increasing interest in the utilization of timber in structures. On the other hand, using timber in some structural elements, such as floor slabs and bridge decks, brings some challenges regarding stiffness, acoustic performance, and fire safety. Thus, timber-concrete composites (TCC) have become popular in renovating and constructing these elements.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate within Transmission Electron Microscopy at the Department of Physics

With the increasing demand for more powerful and energy efficient computing devices, there is a need to move away from silicon based semiconductors. One alternative is the nanostructure artificial spin ice (ASI), where a large number of nanometer scale magnets is arranged in a lattice sufficiently close to interact with each other. By tuning the size, shape and distance between the magnets the large scale behavior changes, possibly allowing them to be used as in-materio computational devices. However, to properly study magnetic properties of these systems, both the full lattice and individual nanomagnets, there is a need for techniques which can study the magnetic properties at nanometer length scales.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Interaction Design and Learning Technologies.

Nowadays, the advances in learning technologies have introduced a new era that builds and extends their impact in learning, teaching and assessment in new and unanticipated ways. In the 21rst century digital world, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) and especially Computer Science (CS) education appears to be more important than ever before, particularly in educating K-12 students and young people. Studying the design, evaluation and implementation of learning systems (combine the use of Learning Analytics, Augmented Reality, 3D printing, and Virtual Robotics solutions among others), dealing with the interaction in real educational settings, is demanding and challenging process. In order to explore the future of learning technologies researchers need to examine the complex interactions and invisible cognitive learning processes as they occur in learning situations using methods and data that will help us to monitor the overall learning experience in more holistic and accurate ways (e.g., multimodal data, AI/ML, other).

The DigiFrailCare project targets digitalization and the use of digitised health data to improve health services for older people at risk of or with frailty. Frailty refers to age-related physical debility; a complex condition characterised by a cumulative decline across multiple physiological systems and increasing vulnerability to adverse health outcomes and death. Sustainable health services for frail older people are highly needed. Three PhDs and one postdoc will work together with an interdisciplinary supervision project team from three faculties and departments to tackle the grand challenges of frailty. This will be done on a medical, a technical, and a societal (STS) expertise level from the three respective PhDs and their faculty affiliation, with an interdisciplinary focused postdoc to integrate the findings across disciplines. The project will impact future multidisciplinary work models for frailty to improve health and function in older people, for the sake of improved and sustainable future health care services.
