There is ongoing concern regarding the potential environmental impacts and ecological significance of trace elements (TEs) from open pit bitumen mining and upgrading, including from the eventual release of treated oil sands process water (OSPW) to the Athabasca River (AR). In many if not most cases, however, total concentrations of TEs in environmental media have been interpreted as having some biological significance, regardless of the chemical form of the element: this has led to many misunderstandings and, often, concern that may be exaggerated. We have developed the analytical technology to clearly distinguish between the amounts of an element which are directly bioavailable to aquatic organisms i.e. the fraction which is “truly dissolved” (< 1 nm), found mainly as ionic species and capable of passing through cell membranes, versus organic and inorganic colloids (1 to 450 nm) and particles (> 450 nm) which are potentially bioaccessible upon ingestion, depending on their chemical reactivity. We now wish to apply our expertise to study industrial particles: those present in OSPW and treated OSPW, aquatic systems from reclaimed landscapes (demonstration pit lakes, constructed wetlands) as well as particles which may erode and leach from the mines, quarries, gravel roads, dry tailings, coke piles and overburden. We will evaluate the potential bioaccessibility of TEs in aquatic particles, using rigorous experimental studies of their chemical reactivity in synthetic gastric fluid. All of the analytical work will be undertaken in the metal-free, ultraclean SWAMP lab. For perspective and context, we will also examine the particles suspended in the AR, from selected locations, as these are expected to represent a natural gradient in bioaccessibility of TEs.

The project involves generation and molecular characterization of breast cancer Patient Derived Organoids (PDOs). PDOs are generated from an individual patient tumor and are cultured as 3D organoids. The candidate will use PDO culture models and next-generation-sequencing  to evaluate PDO drug sensitivity and mechanisms of resistance.  These studies will provide valuable insight on PDO potential as precision health tools.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator (Dr. Gotte), the PDF works in a laboratory that studies viral proteins using biochemical and genetic techniques to understand their mechanisms and facilitate knowledge-based drug design. The successful applicant would be expected to perform experiments in addition to some administrative duties. While the Principal Investigator would be the direct supervisor, the PDF will eventually become largely independent with regards to their day-today activities.

The Departments of Medical Genetics and Psychiatry at the University of Alberta have an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow in the area of genomic studies in psychiatry. The successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary research team to carry out genomic studies in psychiatry including a genomewide association study (GWAS).

We seek a postdoctoral fellow with expertise in adaptive immunology interested in investigating the links between T cell and myeloid polarization, viral and autoimmune inflammation using mouse models. Another PDF position is available to study the underlying mechanisms linking immune dysregulation and cardiac and skeletal muscle wasting during cancer and chemotherapy. We apply cutting-edge tools, such as multi-dimension flow cytometry, RNA-seq, and metabolic profiling to study the pathogenesis in cancer mouse models.

This position offers an exciting and unique opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary team of faculty and students at the intersection of climate change, public health, mental health, waterborne disease, environmental science, and social sciences. The goal of the Principal Investigator’s program of research is to enhance knowledge about use of quality of life assessment and promote equitable person-centred care, in order to improve services for people living at home with chronic and life-limiting illnesses, particularly kidney failure. This study aims to determine best criteria for initiation of breathing support in children with neuromuscular diseases (NMDs). Children with NMDs develop progressive sleep disordered breathing (SDB) due to weakness of their breathing muscles. Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is the standard breathing support therapy for children with NMDs. Recently, an expert group developed criteria for early NIV initiation in children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD); however, these criteria have not been validated yet, and it is unclear whether they will work for children with other NMDs. The aim of this study is to compare benefits of NIV and therapy adherence in children with NMDs initiated on NIV based on usual care versus the new criteria for early NIV initiation. Methods: We will collect retrospective data from children diagnosed with a NMD who have used NIV in the two tertiary children centers in Alberta and the Hospital for Sick Kids (Toronto) since 2018. Data collection will include demographics, symptoms and disease progression from medical charts and sleep study data at NIV initiation and follow up visits. We will categorize children in 3 groups based on: 1. New DMD criteria; 2. New REM-related criteria; and 3. Usual care and compare data on clinical progression and adherence to NIV between these groups. Importance: this study will determine the optimal criteria to start NIV in children with NMDs. This will allow clinicians to recommend NIV at the right time for best chances to improve quality of life and enhance adherence.

A postdoc position is available immediately to study calcium and redox signaling between the Endoplasmic Reticulum and Mitochondria in the Simmen laboratory (Department of Cell Biology, University of Alberta). The successful applicant will be studying the function of redox-sensitive ER proteins in this mechanism. These proteins localize to ER-mitochondria contact sites dependent on oxidation and reduction of cysteines. A special focus interest will be on the significance of this mechanism for the crosstalk between various CNS cell types, using co-culture approaches. The Division of Gastroenterology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta, is offering a postdoctoral position in the area of digital platform based prehabilitation in individuals with chronic disease. The Climate, Health, and Environment Epidemiology Research (CHEER) Lab at the University of Alberta is seeking a full-time postdoctoral fellow (PDF) in the area of epidemiology, climate change, and environmental health. The successful applicant will work on various projects investigating the impacts of climate change, air pollution, and other environmental exposures on a variety of health and social outcomes. This fellowship will provide the opportunity to contribute and lead various projects in the field of environmental epidemiology while working with and learning from collaborators across various disciplines.

The Department of Oncology within the University of Alberta conducts basic and applied research into cancers and related diseases. This project will involve studying lymphatic disorders. This includes lymphedema and lymphocytic leukemias. The main goal of this research is to understand the molecular mechanisms of lymphedema and leukemia, microenvironmental factors that contribute to disease progression and treatment resistance. The successful fellow will be conduction research in cellular models of disease, animal models of disease and correlated these results with human biospecimens from patients suffering from lymphatic disorders.

We have established efficient, AI-automated atom-defined fabrication procedures and have used those to show diverse classical and quantum phenomena can be controlled and probed in this way. This routine access to atom crafted structures provides a game-changing approach to the kind of physics long pursued through normal lithographic means in the study, for example of semiconductor quantum dots and qubits. Our atom-scale approach offers enormous advantages – such as the ability to make any number of identical structures, enormous splitting energies of 100s of meV rather than 100s of micro eV, and clear paths to CMOS integration.

One Postdoctoral Fellowship position is available in the Epidemiological Methods for Equity Research to Generate Evidence (EMERGE) Research Lab in the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta, Canada. The Memory for Events (ME) Lab (PI: Dr. Peggy L. St. Jacques) at the University of Alberta invites applications for a fully funded postdoctoral researcher to lead cognitive neuroscience research investigating memory for real-world events. The postdoc will contribute to research examining the neural mechanisms by which people form and remember immersive memories for realistic events. The Indigenous and Global Health Research Group (IGHRG) led by Dr. Sangita Sharma, the Alberta Health Services Chair in Indigenous Health, in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta is currently accepting applications for a postdoctoral position. The Edmonton Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) clinical and research program at the University of Alberta is seeking a Research Associate to join a dynamic team, consisting of physicians, research nurses, laboratory technicians and administrative support staff. Depressive symptoms are very common among people receiving life-saving dialysis for kidney failure. But depression is rarely addressed or treated in dialysis care. One promising solution is cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which focuses on improving coping skills and changing negative thoughts and feelings. We know CBT is helpful and possible. But how does it work in dialysis care? Why does it help some, but not all people? Who benefits the most? For dialysis programs to move towards making this solution available to patients, it is important to answer these questions.

The successful candidate will work with the Principle Investigator Dr. Guillermo Hernandez-Ramirez with the department of Renewable Resources within the Faculty of Agricultural Life and Environmental Sciences.  This scientific position contributes to lead and coordinate research programs on cereal agronomy at the provincial scale. This involves developing new research questions, writing research proposals, securing funding, implementing and coordinating research projects, data analysis and interpretation, modelling of cropping systems, developing management recommendations for Alberta farmers, and publication of research findings in peer-reviewed journals.  The incumbent will collaborate with government, applied research associations, university and private industry researchers provincially, nationally and international crop commissions and scientific organizations to develop agronomic advice for cereals in all of Alberta’s major agro-ecological environments.
