(21) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Associate in Urban Climate Mitigation and Adaptation

The scholar should have interest and experience in conducting research on urban climate change mitigation and adaptation. Cities concentrate people, wealth, and infrastructure, and, as a result, cities concentrate vulnerability to the growing risks posed by climate change. People who are already socially and/or economically marginalized, such as communities of color, families living in poverty, and the elderly, are particularly vulnerable to climate risks. In many cities, this is compounded by rising income inequality and unequal access to infrastructure and services.

The ideal scholar would be interested in analyzing climate change vulnerability data at the household level as well as measures of civil society and public sector capacities for climate change adaptation across New York City and in other locations where the Center works. We seek a scholar who is comfortable working with faculty, students, public officials, and our civil society partners. The ideal candidate would have strong experience in some or all of the following areas: quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, geospatial data analysis, urban design, data visualization, and community engagement skills. The Postdoctoral Associate will work closely with the Center Director and staff, AAP faculty associated with the initiative, and the Center’s strategic partners.

We seek applicants with a strong research capacity, the ability to assist with project management and administration tasks, and the ability to teach a course in one of AAP’s academic departments. The Postdoctoral Associate is expected to spend approximately 50% their time working on their own research and teaching and 50% of their time supporting the Center’s Urban Climate Mitigation and Adaptation research and projects.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate

A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Nicolas Buchon at Cornell University for a highly motivated candidate to study host-microbe interactions, epithelial dynamics and stem cell biology in Aedes aegypti.

The research project, funded by NIH, will use a combination of omics (transcriptomics, epigenomics, single cell omics), functional genetics (transgenesis, CRISPR), microbiology and imaging to study how microbes and parasites influence epithelial dynamics in the mosquito midgut. Our project will cover studies involving a broad range of microbes including bacteria (pathogens and microbiota), plasmodium as well as viruses. This project is expected to contribute to the advancement of a molecular and cellular understanding of the mosquito midgut and reveal new aspects of its interaction with microbes. The studies will open new inroads for future research, with relevance to resistance and tolerance of mosquitoes to the disease they transmit.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate: bird diversity & forest management – Cornell Lab of Ornithology

The project draws on an ongoing ecosystem-scale passive acoustic monitoring program that generates ~1 million hours of audio annually, the machine learning algorithm BirdNET (https://birdnet.cornell.edu), which generates avian diversity data from the audio, and remotely sensed forest structure datasets that describe both forest management history and current conditions. Core objectives include using Bayesian multispecies occupancy models to: (1) explore the influence of forest management history on contemporary avian biodiversity (80-100 species) and (2) inform the development of a bird diversity index to facilitate quantitative assessments of the effects of forest restoration on biodiversity.

The project scope provides an opportunity to make direct contributions to conservation and basic ecology. It is also particularly collaborative: the incumbent will work closely with Dr. Zach Peery (University of Wisconsin-Madison), federal agency biologists and managers (U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service), and academic researchers specializing in ecology, statistics, and computer science.

In addition to working with external partners, the postdoctoral associate will be working closely with scientists in the Yang Center and other programs at the Lab. We encourage postdoctoral associates to explore related research questions and collaborate on projects conducted in the Lab and with partners.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University seeks a postdoctoral research associate. The position will be located at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, USA. The position is initially available for one year with a potential renewal for a total of two years.

We have developed a novel computational framework to improve understanding of the underlying dynamics that lead to escalating regional hurricane disaster risk, and to support design and analysis of public policy interventions to address them. The framework explicitly considers perspectives of and interactions among multiple key stakeholders (government, primary insurers, and homeowners), and multiple diverse interventions (e.g., home strengthening, acquisition, and insurance). It includes a computable general equilibrium model to relate hurricane damage to gross domestic product, labor wages, savings, etc. We envision the person hired in this position to extend this framework to create an optimization model that represents the government’s interest in controlling hurricane risk by balancing economic growth, equity, and regional loss exposure to determine how to allocate funds for insurance subsidies, mitigation grants and acquisition programs.

About Cornell University, New York, United States – Official Website

Cornell University is a private, statutory, Ivy League and land-grant research university in Ithaca, New York. Founded in 1865 by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White, the university was intended to teach and make contributions in all fields of knowledge—from the classics to the sciences, and from the theoretical to the applied. These ideals, unconventional for the time, are captured in Cornell’s founding principle, a popular 1868 quotation from founder Ezra Cornell: “I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study.”

The university is broadly organized into seven undergraduate colleges and seven graduate divisions at its main Ithaca campus, with each college and division defining its specific admission standards and academic programs in near autonomy. The university also administers two satellite medical campuses, one in New York City and one in Education City, Qatar.

Cornell is one of the few private land grant universities in the United States. Of its seven undergraduate colleges, three are state-supported statutory or contract colleges through the State University of New York (SUNY) system, including its agricultural and human ecology colleges as well as its industrial labor relations school. Of Cornell’s graduate schools, only the veterinary college is state-supported. As a land grant college, Cornell operates a cooperative extension outreach program in every county of New York and receives annual funding from the State of New York for certain educational missions. The Cornell University Ithaca Campus comprises 745 acres, but is much larger when the Cornell Botanic Gardens (more than 4,300 acres) and the numerous university-owned lands in New York City are considered.
