We are seeking a Research Associate specialization in Agronomy. The purpose of the cereal agronomy research program is to generate knowledge and foster innovation to support the growth of Alberta’s cereal crop industry. The candidate’s primary role is to develop, coordinate, lead, execute and interpret research projects to generate high-quality scientific information for growers and the industry.

The successful candidate will work with the Principle Investigator Dr. Guillermo Hernandez-Ramirez with the department of Renewable Resources within the Faculty of Agricultural Life and Environmental Sciences.  This scientific position contributes to lead and coordinate research programs on cereal agronomy at the provincial scale. This involves developing new research questions, writing research proposals, securing funding, implementing and coordinating research projects, data analysis and interpretation, modelling of cropping systems, developing management recommendations for Alberta farmers, and publication of research findings in peer-reviewed journals.  The incumbent will collaborate with government, applied research associations, university and private industry researchers provincially, nationally and international crop commissions and scientific organizations to develop agronomic advice for cereals in all of Alberta’s major agro-ecological environments.

In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, this research associate appointment will be for 18 months from the start date with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding availability with an annual salary range of $74,084 – 101,888 per annum commensurate with education and qualifications.

A Research Associate role is available immediately to join a project on the pathogenesis of placental malaria. The applicant will lead the design of transcriptomic experiments to assess the impact of placental malaria on gene expression in the fetal-derived human placenta and will contribute to experiments to study the interactions of infected red blood cells binding to host receptors in placental tissues. Candidates must have demonstrated experience in placental biology; specifically, they require the skills to isolate primary trophoblast cells and work with placental explants and tissues. Experience with placental imaging and placental signaling are essential. Candidates must be highly motivated to advance their academic career and be excited about research. This position involves working closely with clinician researchers and our laboratory technicians on the design of experiments, data analysis and interpretation, grant applications and publications specific to the gut microbiota, GI infections, pathobionts and antimicrobial resistance testing. The ideal candidate will have a passion for human biotherapies including FMT, the host-microbe interactions with C. difficile infection and experience in probiotics, parabiotics and postbiotics research in GI diseases, especially application of next-generation probiotic strains and their by-products as novel therapeutics.

The Indigenous and Global Health Research Group (IGHRG) led by Dr. Sangita Sharma, the Canada Research Chair in Population Health, Professor in Indigenous and Global Health Research Group in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta is currently accepting applications for postdoctoral positions with the team. The IGHRG is a multi-disciplinary research group of 25+ staff that was established by Dr. Sharma in 2010. Dr. Sharma and the team have an extensive international background working with over 22 populations in various countries worldwide but now primarily focus on working with Indigenous and/or ethnic minority populations in Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories (NT), and Nunavut (NU). Current funded projects include: assessing health and wellness and access to healthcare services with Indigenous seniors and Elders living in NT; maternal and infant health care and outcomes for Indigenous populations in NT; identifying the barriers to and opportunities for improving access to healthcare services for Indigenous populations in NT to inform culturally appropriate programming to improve patient experiences; capturing the anticipated and unanticipated consequences of COVID-19 preventive measures with Indigenous communities in NU and NT; working with NT Indigenous communities to understand the perspectives of community members toward HPV, HPV vaccination along with attitudes towards and experience with the COVID-19 vaccine; assessing side effects and experience of COVID-19 vaccination among NT and NU Indigenous communities; gathering culturally safe recommendations for increasing trust in public health prevention measures in northern Indigenous communities; and working with 25 NT and NU communities to explore community immunity from COVID-19 and COVID-19 vaccination as well as gather recommendations to support future pandemic preparedness in Arctic Canada. These projects offer exciting opportunities to contribute to the current dynamic health situation and toward improving the health and wellness of Indigenous communities in Canada.

The successful applicants will participate and lead research that applies advanced statistical, AI and ML techniques to large populational health data of patients with mental and substance use disorders. Current and potential projects include two main directions: 1) Individualized prediction of mental and substance use disorders and overdoses and associated health and economical outcomes in the population using health, survey and biological data; 2) Implementation of ML models through interactions with multiple stakeholders and people with living and lived experiences

The Memory for Events (ME) Lab (PI: Dr. Peggy L. St. Jacques) at the University of Alberta invites applications for a fully funded postdoctoral researcher to lead cognitive neuroscience research investigating memory for real-world events. The postdoc will contribute to research examining the neural mechanisms by which people form and remember immersive memories for realistic events. Candidates excited about functional neuroimaging of memory for real-world events, the role of visual perspective in shaping mental models of events, and/or the use of state-of-the-art immersive virtual reality methodologies to study event memory are encouraged to apply.

Successful candidates will have a PhD in psychology and/or neuroscience, and a record of publishing fMRI research using advanced methods to study memory (e.g., MVPA, network analysis). Our newly renovated lab space in the Department of Psychology includes 6 behavioral testing rooms and 2 virtual reality suites. Functional neuroimaging is conducted within walking distance at the Peter S. Allen MR Research Centre using a research dedicated 3T Prisma Siemens scanner and MRI-compatible stereoscopic headset for presentation of 3D video stimuli. Additive Design and Manufacturing Systems Laboratory has an immediate vacancy for a Postdoctoral fellow or a research associate in serial robotics and industrial automation. Candidates with experience in the Robot Operating System (ROS) or PLC based control of robotic arms will be preferred.

We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow to join our research group in the area of advanced manufacturing, robotic cell design and development, autonomous repair, and manufacturing automation. The current research focus of the group is in intelligent system design, automation, and manufacturing using Industry 4.0 principles  and technologies. The successful candidate will conduct research in autonomous robotic system design and development, hands-on prototyping, programming, sensors integration and analysis, and intelligent process planning and optimization for offsite construction and manufacturing processes.

The Department of Oncology within the University of Alberta conducts basic and applied research into cancers and related diseases. This project will involve studying lymphatic disorders. This includes lymphedema and lymphocytic leukemias. The main goal of this research is to understand the molecular mechanisms of lymphedema and leukemia, microenvironmental factors that contribute to disease progression and treatment resistance. The successful fellow will be conduction research in cellular models of disease, animal models of disease and correlated these results with human biospecimens from patients suffering from lymphatic disorders.

Reporting to the Principal Investigators (PI), Dr. Spencer Gibson, Professor, the Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute to ongoing research studies focused on novel mechanisms of lymphatic disorders.

The selected candidate will contribute significantly to advancing GUV technologies, dedicating 50% of their time to innovative research, including the design and efficacy testing of UVGI systems. A further 20% will involve the mentorship of graduate and intern students, providing both technical guidance and safety protocols under the Principal Investigator’s supervision. The remaining 30% will focus on self-directed research initiatives and the development of funding proposals.

The research will focus on 1) conducting extensive triaxial testing on various tailings materials to analyze the undrained behaviors associated with static liquefaction, and 2) applying and further developing the Norsand model to interpret and predict static liquefaction of tailings materials.

Applicants are invited to apply for a Postdoctoral Fellowship with the Translating Research in Elder Care (TREC) research program situated at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. TREC is a pan-Canadian and international longitudinal health services and knowledge translation program of applied research situated in long term care (LTC or nursing homes). We are interested in exploring the pathogenesis of Escherichia coli strains associated with inflammatory bowel diseases. The projects to be undertaken are supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)/JDRF and the Cancer Research Society and will explore the impact of insulin resistance T lymphocytes in antitumor immune surveillance. Another project will investigate the underlying metabolic alterations in pathogenic vs regulatory CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in autoimmune diabetes.

We seek a postdoctoral fellow with expertise in adaptive immunology interested in investigating the links between T cell and myeloid polarization, viral and autoimmune inflammation using mouse models.

Another PDF position is available to study the underlying mechanisms linking immune dysregulation and cardiac and skeletal muscle wasting during cancer and chemotherapy. We apply cutting-edge tools, such as multi-dimension flow cytometry, RNA-seq, and metabolic profiling to study the pathogenesis in cancer mouse models.

The postdoc position is supervised by Dr. Xiaoting Li in the Department of East Asian Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Alberta. The research project that the postdoc will participate in is a multimodal study of the directive system in Mandarin interaction. The start date of this position is January 1, 2023. A slightly later start date in spring 2023 might be possible upon negotiation.

The successful candidate will work with Dr. Xiaoting Li on data collection in the field, supervising data transcription, participating in data analysis and research dissemination (publications and presentations). The successful candidate will work with Drs Aman Ullah and Tariq Siddique on a combination of reactor design, biopolymer synthesis and applied biopolymer research. The potential of biopolymers for water remediation will be investigated. The Goping lab has a position available for a postdoctoral fellow for one year with the possiblity of extension. We are looking for person with the skills, enthusiasm, and commitment to conduct rigorous scientific studies in the area of breast cancer research. The candidate will play a key role in a multidisciplinary team project that involves generation and molecular characterization of breast cancer Patient Derived Organoids (PDOs). PDOs are generated from an individual patient tumor and are cultured as 3D organoids. The candidate will use PDO culture models to evaluate Patient/PDO drug sensitivity and use next-generation-sequencing to identify mechanisms of resistance. These studies will provide valuable insight on PDO potential as precision health tools. The position provides opportunities for self-directed learning and possible leadership roles within an exciting and supportive multidisciplinary research team.

The Elahi Lab is seeking an outstanding Immunologists for a 3-year Postdoctoral fellowship. The successful candidate will investigate specific concepts related to solid tumors and other immunological studies.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator (Dr. Gotte), the PDF works in a laboratory that studies viral proteins using biochemical and genetic techniques to understand their mechanisms and facilitate knowledge-based drug design. The successful applicant would be expected to perform experiments in addition to some administrative duties. While the Principal Investigator would be the direct supervisor, the PDF will eventually become largely independent with regards to their day-today activities.
