(21) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Power Electronics

The power electronics research team within the Institute for Energy Systems at the University of Edinburgh is seeking to appoint an experienced Research to work on the modelling of high voltage DC (HVDC) systems and DC circuit breakers (DCCB). The successful candidate will be responsible for part of the University of Edinburgh’s contribution to the Network DC project. This is a multiparter project, led by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSE), which aims to advance the readiness of HVDC networks and enable the deployment of multi-terminal DC grids which cannot exist without DCCBs.

Offshore wind will play a leading role in the transition to net zero, with as much as 100GW required to deliver 2050 net zero targets. Efficient connection of this resource will require a mass investment in voltage source-HVDC to make the connection between the generation and shore. To date, offshore HVDC installations have-been dominated by point-to-point links dedicated to single offshore windfarms. However, substantial cost and environmental benefits can be achieved through a move to more complex HVDC grids which make better use of infrastructure and flexible routing of power flows.

The successful candidate will contribute to the formal security specification and design of cryptographic protocols in the Open Finance area. In Open Finance we envision multiple entities, each holding private data, that want to perform joint computation over this data to offer to customers the best possible financial products. The main goal of the project is to investigate what are the security requirements for Open Finance, and then provide a formal security specification (e.g., in the Universal Composable framework) of such a system. The successful candidate will then work on designing a protocol that matches this security definition, and in the final stage of the project, will implement part of the system, focusing on a specific use case. The candidate will be supported by members of the Business School to successfully complete the first phase of the project related to understanding the basic security requirements of an Open Finance system. The majority of the project will be related to the formal design of the system that will be supported by members of the School of Informatics. The project is funded by Input-Output Global.

The University of Edinburgh is a public research university located in Edinburgh, Scotland. Founded in 1582 and officially opened in 1583, the university is one of Scotland’s four ancient universities and the sixth-oldest university in the English-speaking world. The university has five main campuses in the city of Edinburgh, which include many buildings of historical and architectural significance such as those in Old Town. The university played an important role in Edinburgh becoming a chief intellectual centre during the Scottish Enlightenment, contributing to the city being nicknamed the “Athens of the North”.

The university is a member of a number of prestigious academic organisations, including the Russell Group, the Coimbra Group, the Universitas 21, the Una Europa, and the League of European Research Universities, a consortium of 23 leading research universities in Europe. It has the third largest endowment of any university in the United Kingdom, after the universities of Cambridge and Oxford. In 2019-20, the university has a consolidated annual income of £1,125.3 million, of which £296.1 million was from research grants and contracts.
