PhD position summary/title: PhD positions at C2DH within FNR-funded Doctoral Training Unit “Deep Data Science of Digital History” (D4H)

The C²DH has seven job openings for doctoral candidates (PhD student) to work within the framework of the Doctoral Training Unit “Deep Data Science of Digital History” (D4H). This interdisciplinary DTU focuses on multiple challenges at the intersection between the disciplines of history and data science. The DTU will train a new generation of digitally literate PhD students to deal with “big data of the past” in a critical and competent way, combining the epistemic tradition of close reading with machine-based methods of distant reading (“scalable reading”). It aims to develop a shared understanding of the human/machine nexus in collecting, curating, managing, analysing, interpreting, and visualizing historical data and to problematize the multi-layered temporalities of datasets and experiment with new forms and formats of historical models and simulations in a longue-durée / deep time perspective.

PhD position summary/title:    Doctoral Researcher in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics and Machine Learning

We seek a highly motivated bioinformatician or computational biologist who is well versed in the statistical and machine learning analysis of biomedical data and bioscientific programming for a project on the study of neurological disorders. The candidate should have experience in the analysis of large-scale biomedical data (omics, clinical or neuroimaging data), using statistical methods, pathway/network analysis or machine learning. The candidate will conduct integrative analyses of biomedical datasets, focusing on omics, neuroimaging and clinical data to predict prognostic outcomes of interest (clinical progression, worsening of morphometry and connectivity patterns in brain MRI). This will include implementing and applying software analysis pipelines and interpreting disease-related data together with experimental and clinical collaborators. Classification models guided by prior mechanistic knowledge will be built, exploiting the known grouping structures among features in the omics and neuroimaging data, using dedicated structured learning algorithms. With the help of statistics, machine learning and pathway- and network- and analyses, the goal is to improve the mechanistic understanding of disease-associated alterations in neurological disorders.

PhD position summary/title:    Doctoral candidates in Statistics and Probability

The MATHCODA Doctoral Training Unit is a doctoral program covering a coherent set of themes around the ideation and study of novel mathematical tools for dealing with high-dimensional and complex data structures, with applications ranging from life sciences to engineering and finance. The main rationale behind our project is the necessity of training a new generation of researchers, possessing a full mastery of the mathematical tools that are needed for modelling and statistically analysing data structures displaying non-standard features, such as high-dimensional components, complicated topological structures, or long-range dependence. The proposed DTU will be led by seven supervisors from Luxembourg University – each of them a scientific leader, specializing in one or more facets of mathematical statistics, probability theory, and their applications. According to our vision, the interaction between the distinct research groups participating in MATHCODA will provide to the doctoral candidates an invaluably rich learning environment, as well as an ideal springboard for their subsequent careers.

PhD position summary/title:    PhD candidate in Sustainability in Space – Designing Future Space Services and Infrastructure

The current servitization of space is introducing profound change, challenging established companies with new business models, and significantly lowering the entry barrier to space. New types of services such as Mission-as-a-Service, Satellite-as-a-Service, Constellation-as-a-Service, etc., are emerging at a rapid pace. This is just the beginning. The future might see a space infrastructure on which new space services could be built at low cost and risk, similar to business models enabled by the internet, cloud computing, etc. on Earth. Key enablers for such an infrastructure are communications and data infrastructures and new computing approaches such as edge computing, fog computing, cloud computing. These combined services and infrastructure elements (also called product-service system) could also lead to significant sustainability benefits via replacing physical products by services. Instead of developing a spacecraft which would impact the environment via its production, launch and space debris, various space assets and their capacities are efficiently used, reducing the environmental impact significantly (e.g. constellation shared between multiple users instead of each one launching a separate constellation). However, these new space services and infrastructure are largely unexplored to date, despite their huge potential.

PhD position summary/title:    PhD candidates – Spontaneous Applications for Next Generation Radar Sensing Networks

The group has been working on next generation radar sensors in different applications, including  automotive, autonomous vehicles, in-cabin monitoring, occupancy sensing, drones, multi-copters, gesture recognition, smart buildings, smart street lighting, smart factories, healthcare and robotics. The emerging radar sensors that are in use by the group, are using multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technology and can be connected to build distributed and co-operative sensing networks.   SPARC group has further expanded its research to integrated sensing and communications, weather radar systems and metacognitive radars,. To develop the signal processing techniques, the group researchers are using real data captured by the available radar modules at the lab, or the custom built MIMO radar with flexibility of changing the transmit waveform and signal processing units on the fly.  Its members have been involved in a number of seminal papers in the area of waveform optimization, vital signs monitoring, joint radar and communications, sparse arrays, interference modeling, 4D radar imaging, distributed sensing, and tracking. SPARC has also collaborating with long term industry partner IEE S.A (www.iee.lu) , University of Naples Federico II, US Airforce Laboratories, TU Berlin and TU Munich among others.

PhD position summary/title:    PhD candidate in Spaceborne Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry

The Geophysics Laboratory (GL) focuses on climate, sea level variability and geodynamics. The primary goals include satellite geodesy of new remote sensing applications and obtaining reliable geodetic measurements of environmental change and assessing the influence of human and natural factors in those changes. To do so, the group has developed a patented differential free-fall gradiometer as part of our activities in scientific metrology, advanced high-accuracy Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) techniques, provided interpretation of time variable gravity from space and improved the modelling of environmental effects on geodetic observations. In particular, the team investigates changes in the water cycle, the mass changes in the polar ice sheets, the dynamics of the Yellowstone Caldera. Additionally, the team focuses on space-borne GNSS-R for soil moisture and grazing angle GNSS-R for sea-ice studies over sea-ice covered regions.
