The Center for Geospatial Analytics seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate in spatial data science and modeling the spread of invasive species. These new positions will join the Biological Invasions group of the Landscape Dynamics Lab led by Drs. Ross Meentemeyer and Chris Jones. The Landscape Dynamics Lab specializes in forecasting landscape and environmental change with an emphasis on collaborating with stakeholders to explore what may happen in the future under different scenarios. We turn complex models and simulations into user-friendly discovery tools by developing sophisticated back-end algorithms and interactive front-end dashboards that visualize location data clearly and quickly. Our biological invasion team is coupling landscape forecasts of invasion dynamics with interactive decision analytics to help practitioners compare strategies to control spread. We cultivate an open-source community of users and developers who advance our methods and models and find new applications. Multiple current projects involve partnering with the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to build tools to quantify at-risk areas and inform their decisions regarding invasive pest and pathogen management. These and other research collaborations adopt a participatory modeling approach, wherein we work closely with individuals who both affect and are affected by invasive species to co-create data, forecasts, and visualizations that support real-world action.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Post Doctoral Research Scholar

An NIH-funded postdoctoral fellowship is available immediately in the laboratory of Dr. Heather Patisaul for work related to endocrine disruption, brain development, and placental function. Specifically, this project is using rats and prairie voles to establish the degree to which developmental exposure to flame retardants, commonly found in human placenta and fetal cord blood, affect the development and function of neuroendocrine pathways fundamental to socio-emotional behavior. The Patisaul lab is housed in the department of Biological Sciences and the Center for Human Health and the Environment (CHHE) at NC State University. We use a variety of models and tools in our research including RNAseq, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, histology, and behavioral testing. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in the neurosciences, including experience with -omics and basic bioinformatics, and an interest in neurodevelopmental toxicology and/or endocrine disruption.

We are seeking a postdoc to perform research in surface chemical reactions for atomically precise thin film deposition and etching of materials including metals, metal oxides and polymers. The overall goal of these projects, funded by industry, is to develop a fundamental understanding and control of organic vapor deposition on flat and porous surfaces. Specifically, they target depositing low surface energy coatings on polymer films and nonwovens using a novel process technique called molecular layer deposition (MLD). The postdoc will focus on understanding basic surface reactions to identify novel approaches to integrate deposition and etching to achieve well-controlled MLD suitable for advanced manufacturing.
