The Burki lab was recently awarded an ERC Consolidator grant (PlastidOrigin) that aims to study one of the most transformative events in eukaryote evolution–the origin of the photosynthetic organelles (the primary plastids) in Archaeplastida. The main aim of this postdoc position is to characterize novel protist diversity that diverged near the origin of Archaeplastida–the supergroup of eukaryotes where plastids were established more than 1.5 billion years ago. One of the main target environments for sampling will be microbialites. A suite of methods will be employed, including sampling microbialites, long-read metabarcoding, cultivation, microscopy, single-cell transcriptomics, metagenomics, phylogenomics.

The position involves sampling (in particular abroad), lab work, and bioinformatics. Lab work may include: cell isolation, imaging with advanced microscopy, cell-sorting, attempts for cultivation of interesting cells in enrichment cultures, and library preparation for metabarcoding and HTS sequencing. Bioinformatics includes analysis of diversity datasets, phylogenetics, analysis of genomic datasets, phylogenomic. Disseminate results in appropriate formats, including leading peer-reviewed publications and conferences. Training will be provided when necessary. The position includes travels, for short (e.g. conference) or longer period to sampling trips.

The applicant will work in an interdisciplinary project that involves inorganic synthesis, materials characterization, electrochemical analysis, and battery test. Major duty is to perform experimental work. Applicants will primarily be involved in the relithiation of LFP from spent batteries by using chemical or electrochemical methods. The regenerated LFP will be analyzed through materials characterization and evaluated through battery performance tests.  

The main task of the position is to develop new paradigm for building embedded systems that are updatable in field after deployment, and efficient and scalable techniques for run-time resource management and safety validation of dynamic updates. Research issues include design and implementation of deterministic multi-thread real-time systems, multiprocessor scheduling, end-to-end latency analysis, and verification of functional and non-functional correctness of embedded systems.

We are looking for a scientific researchers with a strong background in software development, or software developer with a strong interest in science. You will join a  new project, within which applied statistics and information theory will be used to quantify the information content of neutron reflectivity datasets. Using this, we are able to optimize the design of experiments and to make previously impossible experiments possible, as well as to run existing experiments faster and better.

Within the research programme for Inorganic chemistry research is conducted on solution chemical materials synthesis. This implies development of new processes for advanced functional materials and detailed characterisation of all steps taking the precursors in solution into the solid target material upon heating. The materials produced are of different morphologies and complexity. Therefore, a wide range of experimental techniques is required in order to understand and control the reactions and obtain the desired materials. The Post-doc position is directed towards development of durable materials compatible with molten lead at the high temperatures employed in Gen IV nuclear reactors. The research is conducted within the SSF project ”SUNRISE” (SUstainable Nuclear Research In Sweden) directed to development and verification of materials for use in gen IV nuclear reactors. This six-year project is conducted in a close collaboration between KTH, UU and LTU. Therefore, while most of the work is conducted at the solution synthesis group at UU, there will be much collaboration with researchers at KTH (Stockholm) and LTU (Luleå).

Psychological and technical development for a remotely delivered psychological intervention after trauma. The researcher will join the Holmes research group at the Department of Psychology, Uppsala University (Emotion and Mental Imagery Lab). We use experimental psychopathology to inform psychological treatment development, with a focus on the area of mental imagery and the clinical field of psychological trauma.

The focus area of this position is the study of the physical features of particular events occurring in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) that have a high impact in the dynamics of wind parks and affect their performance. Examples of these events are low level jets, shallow ABLs and wind turbine blockage. This task is mainly accomplished by implementing computational models to represent the aforementioned atmospheric conditions over different regions and their interaction with wind turbines located in wind parks. The regions of interest comprise both offshore and onshore, with a particular interest in complex and forested terrains. The models that will be implemented and used for the CFD simulations should be of sufficient resolution as to represent the turbulence motions across a wind park (including rotor wakes) as well as the changes during the diurnal stability transition. Due to these demands, Large-Eddy Simulations should be employed.

These postdoctoral positions in mass spectrometric chemical biology and metabolomics for microbiome investigation are available in the laboratory of Associate Professor Daniel Globisch. The Globisch laboratory is an international and multidisciplinary research group. Our research focus lies on the development of new methodologies to enhance the scope of quantitative and qualitative metabolomics-based research to simplify the discovery of disease-specific small molecule biomarkers in human samples (Example literature: Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2021, 60, 23232-23240; 2020, 59, 14342; 2018, 57, 13805; 2021; Chem. Sci. 2018, 9, 6233; Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 2013, 110, 4218).

Machine learning is becoming a key component in many modern devices and services, ranging from personal mobile devices to autonomous vehicles or smart grids. To improve the underlying machine learning models, it is often crucial that devices share data among each other or with a central authority. This raises several privacy and cybersecurity issues and it must be ensured that both user data remains safe and that user’s privacy is ensured. In this project, we investigate how these challenges can be addressed using modern privacy-preserving approaches such as federated learning, differential privacy and machine learning using encrypted data.

This postdoctoral position forms part of the Human Frontier Science Program project “Bridging robotics and buzz pollination: Reconstructing a bee’s buzz through microrobotics” (2022-2025). It represents a collaboration between the research groups of Dr. Mario Vallejo-Marin (Uppsala University, Sweden) and Dr. Noah Jafferis (University of Massachussetts, Lowe, U.S.A.). Our project exploits new advances in micro-robotics to study a fundamental interaction between bees and flowers during buzz pollination, a phenomenon that includes thousands of plant and bee species around the world. During buzz pollination, bees from as many as 11,000 species use their indirect flight muscles to generate vibrations to shake pollen out of flowers. Buzz pollination captures one of the most striking and widespread examples of floral convergence, occurring in more than 20% of flowering plant families, including crops, such as tomatoes, which depend on vibration-producing bees.

We are now looking for you who is interested in becoming a member of our team. This postdoctoral position involves participation in the planning, coordination and implementation of our research studies that aim to provide scientifically robust answers to several of the current knowledge gaps in the field of gender dysphoria (GD). For example, you will be examining core outcomes of gender affirming treatments (GAT) in GD and the safety of those treatments. You will also coordinate a multicenter qualitative study on de/retransition and changed needs for gender-affirming medical care in Sweden.

The Division of Computer Systems seeks to strengthen its core research activities through the recruitment of up to five promising postdocs. The biodiversity of microbes is known to be extraordinarily high but most species remain uncultivated and we therefore know very little about their evolution and functioning in ecosystems. In this 2-year funded post-doc project, we will develop a microfluidic-assisted cell-sorting method that aims to isolate specific microbial cells from a mixed population in order to retrieve their genome in a targeted fashion.

We are searching for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with excellent track record to identify and solve scientific problems. The employment is for 2 years, aiming to develop antibody-based cancer immunotherapy and to identify mechanisms of effector cells responsible for tumor destruction. By using 2 and 3-dimensional human-immune cell tumor models, molecular mechanisms and novel treatment strategies in hematological malignancies are investigated. General responsibilities include design, implement, and to interpret experiments, both independently and in collaboration, and communicate scientific results at seminars, conferences and in articles. Human body can be equipped with wearable electronic devices that generate, process and transmit data in real time to monitor health conditions and perform neurosurgical treatment for patients, for instance, suffering from Parkinson’s disease (PD), essential tremor, dystonia and other neurological conditions. One challenge to realizing such a system is to create a software toolkit for on-body secure, low-power processing and computing signals generated by sensors and actuators. The research assigned to the position has a focus on developing machine learning (ML) modules to process tactile and tremor signals generated by neuromorphic electronic skin (ne-skin). The ne-skin converts analogue tactile signals into electrical pulses, thus encoding the mechanical signals in spike timing. ML algorithms based on artificial neural networks (ANN) will be developed for processing data streams from the ne-skin. The ML algorithms mimic the computation function in the afferent nervous system prior to the brain. To support low-power and high-efficiency signal processing, ML based on spiking neural networks (SNN) will be developed to achieve local, low power signal processing on signals about tremor and tactility. 

The Burki lab was recently awarded an ERC Consolidator grant (PlastidOrigin) that aims to study one of the most transformative events in eukaryote evolution–the origin of the photosynthetic organelles (the primary plastids) in Archaeplastida. The main aim of this postdoc/researcher position is to produce the first plastid proteomes for red algae using whole-cell spatial proteomics with the hyperLOPIT method (or alternatively LOPIT-DC). By combining this data to verified proteomes for other archaeplastids, and by searching for homologues in other eukaryotes and prokaryotes, we want to characterize the origin of plastid proteins and the size of the endosymbiotic vs non-endosymbiotic plastid proteomic fractions across archaeplastids. Depending on the expertise of the candidate, a training period may be organised abroad.

We are looking for a researcher in condensed matter theory for a project on advanced energy and bio-materials. The project is part of a larger effort focusing on new materials for energy and bio applications. These structures can be freely utilized for loading by and sensing of the interesting species like enzymes, DNA, etc. hence offering new possibilities in biosensing and green energy markets. Because of the highly complex geometries understanding of these hybrid nanomaterials at every stage is needed to better tuning the structure-property relation. Other study aims at efficient and sustainable hydrogen generation through developing more accurate transition pathway prediction technique as compared to the available ones, with a prime focus on two-dimensional (2D) materials and to envisage the catalytic reaction mechanism for H2O and CH4 dissociation on such 2D materials achieve efficient H2 production.  The project involves the computational work using advanced electronic structure methods and large-scale computer simulations. The duties include collaboration with the various members of the group as well as outside group in Sweden/abroad and the production of research results in form of scientific publications.
