In this project, we will examine what explains the growing willingness to fight. Our unit of analysis will be societies and their average willingness to fight, rather than individual level data. We will examine to what extent changing levels of conflict in a country’s vicinity, economic crises, terrorist incidences and societal polarization correlate with the growing willingness to fight. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC POSITION ON USING VR TO PREDICT EVERYDAY FUNCTIONING IN VISUAL IMPAIRMENT (VRIJE UNIVERSITEIT AMSTERDAM)
The primary aim of this project is to find a measure of real-world visual performance for people with vision impairment. We will combine virtual reality with eye and head tracking to develop an index of functional vision that can be obtained from natural, dynamic viewing behavior. In addition, this allows us to develop suitable models of how eye, head, and navigational movements combine for different visual impairments. We will explore and test the methods on groups of visually impaired, including elderly and Paralympic athletes. The project will deliver invaluable scientific impact by 1) developing suitable methodologies for measuring orienting behavior in the visually impaired, 2) validating existing scientific models of eye-head coordination that so far have been based on normally seeing populations, and 3) establishing a publicly available corpus of navigation & orienting data in impaired populations for the scientific community to use.

The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is a public research university in Amsterdam, Netherlands, founded in 1880, and consistently ranks among the top 150 universities in the world by major ranking tables. The VU is one of two large, publicly funded research universities in the city, the other being the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The literal translation of the Dutch name Vrije Universiteit is “Free University”. “Free” refers to independence of the university from both the State and the Dutch Reformed Church. Although founded as a private institution, the VU has received government funding on a parity basis with public universities since 1970. The official university seal is entitled The Virgin in the Garden. Personally chosen by Abraham Kuyper, the Reformed-Protestant leader and founder of the university, it depicts a virgin living in freedom in a garden while pointing towards God, referring to the Protestant Reformation in the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century. In 1990, the university adopted the mythical griffin as its common emblem.
