Postdoc summary/title: POSTDOC POSITION IN THE FIELD OF SINGLE-MOLECULE BIOPHYSICS

The Dulin lab at VU has to offer one fully funded postdoc position (1+2 years) in the field of biophysics to study protein-nucleic acids interactions to start as soon as possible. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to investigate protein-RNA interactions, with a particular focus on RNA virus’s replication-transcription complex, e.g.  SARS-CoV-2, dengue, chikungunya, using state-of-the-art single molecule techniques, e.g., magnetic tweezers (MT), total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRFM), correlative MT-TIRFM, single-molecule FRET, combined optical tweezers and fluorescence microscopy. Specifically, our lab aims at reconstituting the viral replication-transcription complex in vitro for the aforementioned viruses. We will use a combination of force and fluorescence spectroscopy to investigate how the composition of these complexes regulate their function. Our long-term goal is to discover new drug antiviral targets. Within the lab, the successful candidate will design and perform experiments, and develop new computational analysis tools to perform these investigations.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN SCIENCE COMMUNICATION AND PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT

Science communication is more important than ever. Yet, in light of digitalization, fragmentation and polarization of society, it has also become more challenging than ever. Persisting controversies around complex and uncertain issues such as the pandemic, nitrogen pollution or the climate crisis have made the relation between science and society become strained. Science is contested in a public arena where trust and expertise are not taken for granted. In the face of these developments, we need to rethink science-society interactions and interfaces. We believe that science communication can play an important role in co-shaping new roles and conditions for a fruitful democratic dialogue between science and society.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC PEACE AND CONFLICT STUDIES

This postdoc position is part of the project “Towards a new belligerency? Explaining changing attitudes on the willingness to fight for one’s country”. In this project, we will examine what explains the growing willingness to fight. Our unit of analysis will be societies and their average willingness to fight, rather than individual level data. We will examine to what extent changing levels of conflict in a country’s vicinity, economic crises, terrorist incidences and societal polarization correlate with the growing willingness to fight. You can find more information on the project here.

Deadline : 31/01/2023.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC IN LAND USE AND CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION AND ADAPTATION

The postdoc will work in the international KNOWING project (https://knowing-climate.eu/), funded by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe framework with 16 other institutes. The KNOWING project aims to develop a system-dynamics based modelling framework to help understand and quantify the interactions between impacts and risks of climate change, mitigation pathways and adaptation strategies. The framework will focus on three main climate impact contexts: 1) Heat waves & health, (2) Soil fertility & agriculture (which this postdoc will focus on) and (3) Flooding & infrastructure (including river and coastal flooding). The Postdoc candidate will also work closely with another postdoc and with two staff members from the Environmental Geography and Water and Climate Risk sections of the Institute. Different models will be developed for different climate impact contexts, and the postdoc is expected to collaborate with other project partners to embed the land use model within the system dynamics framework.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC POSITION ON USING VR TO PREDICT EVERYDAY FUNCTIONING IN VISUAL IMPAIRMENT (VRIJE UNIVERSITEIT AMSTERDAM)

The primary aim of this project is to find a measure of real-world visual performance for people with vision impairment. We will combine virtual reality with eye and head tracking to develop an index of functional vision that can be obtained from natural, dynamic viewing behavior. In addition, this allows us to develop suitable models of how eye, head, and navigational movements combine for different visual impairments. We will explore and test the methods on groups of visually impaired, including elderly and Paralympic athletes. The project will deliver invaluable scientific impact by 1) developing suitable methodologies for measuring orienting behavior in the visually impaired, 2) validating existing scientific models of eye-head coordination that so far have been based on normally seeing populations, and 3) establishing a publicly available corpus of navigation & orienting data in impaired populations for the scientific community to use.

Deadline : 15/01/2023.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW STRESS IN ACTION

As the Postdoc within the Data Infrastructure Support Core, your mission is to guide the harmonization and meta-data annotation of the existing data collected during daily life settings within various large national cohorts (e.g. arising from the Rotterdam Study, Generation R, LifeLines, NESDA and Netherlands Twin Register studies). Stress-in-Action core applicants performed ambulatory assessment studies that collected relevant data on stress responses, disease outcomes, and potential moderators in these cohorts (at current count, N > 8000). Together, these data provide a useful resource for modelling each of the four components of the stress response (emotional, cognitive, physiological and behavioural).

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC ON QUANTIFYING NATIONAL GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS USING ATMOSPHERIC MEASUREMENTS

The European research project AVENGERS develops techniques for improving the greenhouse gas emission reports that countries submit annually to the UNFCCC. Currently most country reports are based solely on emission accounting methods based on statistics on economic activities. This project investigates how results of atmospheric inverse modelling can be used to improve national emission inventories, such that they are consistent with observed changes in greenhouse gas abundances in the atmosphere. The international and multi-disciplinary research team includes scientists as well as inventory experts from national environmental agencies in Europe.

About  The Vrije University Amsterdam, Netherlands –Official Website

The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is a public research university in Amsterdam, Netherlands, founded in 1880, and consistently ranks among the top 150 universities in the world by major ranking tables. The VU is one of two large, publicly funded research universities in the city, the other being the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The literal translation of the Dutch name Vrije Universiteit is “Free University”. “Free” refers to independence of the university from both the State and the Dutch Reformed Church. Both within and outside the university, the institution is commonly referred to as “the VU”. Although founded as a private institution, the VU has received government funding on a parity basis with public universities since 1970. The university is located on a compact urban campus in the southern Buitenveldert neighbourhood of Amsterdam and adjacent to the modern Zuidas business district.

In 2014, the VU had 23,656 registered students, most of whom were full-time students. That year, the university had 2,263 faculty members and researchers, and 1,410 administrative, clerical and technical employees, based on FTE units. The university’s annual endowment for 2014 was circa €480 million. About three quarters of this endowment is government funding; the remainder is made up of tuition fees, research grants, and private funding.

The official university seal is entitled The Virgin in the Garden. Personally chosen by Abraham Kuyper, the Reformed-Protestant leader and founder of the university, it depicts a virgin living in freedom in a garden while pointing towards God, referring to the Protestant Reformation in the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century. In 1990, the university adopted the mythical griffin as its common emblem.
